Ummm, isn't this song a bit of an anachronism for the time period of this show? There surely were not telephones. Perhaps they should have changed the word to "telegragh"?
Heavens to Murgatroid! Always a JOY & DELIGHT to see the very pretty and very talented Ms Grimes! I've been watching a few episodes of "The Virginian" on the Encore Western channel lately but must have missed this one. Lots of familiar faces in this scene: James Drury (star of the show), veteran TV guest star Ed Nelson & Frank Cady (best known for playing Sam Drucker in TV's "Green Acres" and "Petticoat Junction"). THANKS for posting this delightful clip! You've MADE my day! :)
Yes PismoBeach I concur 'bout Elizabeth Montgomery resemblance, but also Kim Novak, star of "Bell, Book & Candle" on witch "Bewhiched" was loosely based; funny thing because "Samantha" 1st appeared as a young 20 year ingenue in the back pages of October 30-November 4, 1953 TV Guide, w/ Kukla & Beulah Witch (!) from "Kukla, Fran & Ollie" on the cover;
Maybe Ms. Grimes dismissed the concept because the "B, B & C" movie flopped (I ♥ it!) meanwhile Montgomery had an 8 year long gig.
The Encore Westerns TV channel (Dish 342), just started broadcasting "THE VIRGINIAN" w/James Drury Jan. 1, 2010. I saw this tonite, from episode "The Exiles", 1963, & I fell in love with her unique speaking & singing voice! My favorite song she sings is something about Kissing the man in the Moon. I'm looking forward to seeing this show again.
I dont really know that much about tammy because I was born in 1977 but she seems to be a really cool person did she do anymore singing like this one on video where could i find it if she did?
@Dawnmariegrasso: Tammy starred in the 1964 Broadway musical "High Spirits," based on Noel Coward's play "Blithe Spirit." Her co-star was Edward Woodward (TV's "The Equalizer"), who passed away last year.
I don't know if the show was ever recorded on video, but you might find the original cast album on Amazon-dot-com or Evilbay.
Grimes is an understated performer. It's a strange persona--but her daughter, Amanda Plummer, has it, too. There's an attempt at naturalness that makes the performace border on the impersonal--as if the actor is not involved. I saw Tammy in both MOLLY and HIGH SPIRITS. She was a captivating Elvira and watching her fly (ala Peter Pan) was a hoot. Try to listen to her on these two recordings and perhaps some of her appeal will come across to you.
I have to agree with you, I have never gotten Tammy Grimes. Saw her in Unsinkable Molly Brown, and she was good. After that nothing much. She was by far the weakest link in the Gower Champion 42nd St. Many of the replacements were way better than she was. I have never understood the "magic" of the lady.
You've got a point. "Hello My Baby (Hello Ma Ragtime Gal)" by Emerson, Howard, & Sterling was a hit in 1899. The heyday of the old west was in the 1870's. Artistic license, I suppose.
Curious coincidence. Tammy Grimes played opposite Eddie Bracken as a cat in Archie and Mehitibel, a musical television production.
Archie was a cockroach, you see. He communicated by jumping on typewriter keys -- all lower case, because he wasn't heavy enough to press the shift key.
Archie and Mehitibel were the creations of Don Marquis.

@cleric1104 The phone, being invented in 1876, could be said to date from that period. But the song is actually from 1899.

Very well said.
She was thrilling to see in person, the memory still vivid after all these years.

Meh, I just don't see that great a presence here. Maybe she has more stage presence in other things but this just isn't entertaining.

Joe Howard also wrote Goodbye, My Lady Love. He lived long enough to sing his songs on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Don Marquis came to a tragic end. (I forget the details; Alzheimer's.)

Wasn't there a frog that sang this song in a Warner Bros. cartoon? She sings it much better, though. Nice performance/video.
