We are doing this as one of our district assessment pieces. It's such a honor to be playing it. when I found out I was fled with joy! My first run of this with my band was yesterday. I cried and got goose bumps. Reminded my a lot of when I did Hymn to a blue hour in All-State. no, it wasn't perfect.. but for the first time I felt like there was people who cared about what they were doing in my band. this hardly happens with slow pieces where Im from. What an awesome song to end high school with.
@ThatOneDM Ironically, my brother played this at his highschool a while ago on horn and I think the following year he said they played Vesuvius. They're both great songs (:
my band just got this a few days ago as a piece for contest in March and when we listened to the recording of this, i was so touched and moved. it's just a beautiful song and listening to the words, it's even more beautiful :)
Playing French horn 1 for this piece (there's only 3 total horns in band, lucky me got picked for first).....the whole songs practically a solo for me hahaha XD
Still it's absolutely incredible, makes me almost cry when I play lol
never played this peice but I do love it. I can imagine it would give me the same feeling I got when I played Shanandoah by Frank Ticheli, Song for Lyndsay by Andrew Boysen, and October by Eric Whitacre. I love the French Horn.
I am playing this right now and every time we play it I want to cry. It gives me one of those moments when I can just forget about everything exept the music. One of the purest, most beautiful songs ever written. Everybody should have a chance to play this to get the same feeling. It can't be surpassed.
First time I had the privilidge to play with the Ed. W. Clark Highschool Wind Ensemble, back in 2009, this was one of our pieces; Mother Earth was our opening Fanfare and Hounds of Spring finished off the performance. This piece, O Magnum Mysterium, gave me a feeling that mere words could never describe. Goosebumps? Shivers? No, beyond that. It made me enjoy being able to play a Clarinet, to be in such a great group, it remains in my head nearly everyday; A beautiful piece.
I get to play this in band I play 2nd horn. It's so beautiful...I have so much trouble not crying during it and the 1st horn part is just the best. It's so emotional and when everyone plays it with their heart and not just reading the notes on the page it becomes even greater. :)
I get goosebumps everytime I hear dissonance like at 2:59! Absolutely beautiful. I remember I played this one time in my orchestra class and my instructor just told us to play with our hearts. So we played. Almost everyone in the room was crying and when we were done. No one could speak. THis song moved us all... and it brought us closer as musicians.
Someone must have had their monitor upside down and mixed up the like and dislike buttons and hit the dislike button by mistake, because this song should be immune to dislikes =D.
I was fortunate to have been able to play this with my high school honors band when I was a freshman. This may be the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. This piece and Sleep by Eric Whitacre are my favorites that I have played.
I want to perform this song sooo badly! We have it at my school and sight read it for practice, but our teacher wont let us perform it because it kills our lips too easily for those who play non-stop =(
I was fortunate to play this piece under the direction of Robert Reynolds himself at Carnegie Hall. This piece makes me lose it, so holding that back on stage at Carnegie was so hard. Beautiful piece.
I love arrangers that don't just throw something together to hit their publication quotas... I've heard a lot of Choir>Band arrangements suck... but this shows a great mastery in the art of translating vocal tone and chord structure into music for instruments with different tones. This is great stuff Mr. Reynolds!
i like the song and im a tuba player so im used to not having melody but this song has 8 measures of notes and its only 2 different notes come on Robert Reynolds show some tuba love
@TheRoyalFlush7 Yeah, I know what you mean. I play the tuba as well, but it's all about the blend of the band. This may be my favorite piece that I have played.
Our band just played this today in rehearsal to honor a friend within the band who passed on two days ago... his parents were there and listened to us... it made an already powerful piece of music an unstoppable emotional force.
@glago93 I feel you, there. A member of my graduating class was killed with a knife, over a parking space. We decided to perform this and October by Eric Whitacre to remember him, and all of the members of Raider Nation who were lost prematurely. My high school has lost a lot over the years, and as members of the Pride of my HS, it was the only thing we could think of. When we got down, the seniors (my class) where in tears because of the power and sheer emotion.
I played this at a Christian music course last week. I was on 2nd cornet so I wasn't oplaying for a lot of the piece, and I just closed my eyes and just took it in. I'm a 13year old who wouldnt usually just cry but I couldn't help it. This is a kind of feeling and emotion that you can't recreate with any other style of music. It is just beautiful.
I played this on a Christian music course last week. I was on 2nd cornet so didnt play for a lot of the piece so I just got to close my eyes and listen. Its beautiful, it borught tears to my eyes, a 13 year old who doesn't show tears often but i just couldnt help it. This is a feeling you can only get from this kind of music.
<3 Preformed this for out Christmas concert, <33 when we got to the Climax of this piece, I started to tear, It was so beautiful <3 Me and my friend Duet the Euphonium solo and both of us teared so hard, this has to be one of my favorite Legato pieces I have preformed <3
Performing this piece was one of my most memorable moments in high school. We hadn't been doing as good as we normally do, there was a lot of conflict in the band, but we got there and we played this piece so emotionally. It was amazing. My band director even did this little motion and face expression like "yeah!!!"
@JoeShmoe102 same here. i just started to play bass trombone when i got put on that, the last note was just so pure the last time i played it, it just sent chills straight down my spine. i love this song
@MarimbaBeast I know what you mean. I played this last year on timpani, and there was only two rolls. Anyways, this is such a great song. Thank you so much for posting it.
we played this song for our senior concert.. so as i listen to it.. it reminds me of all the baby/senior pictures that were on the screen as we played the song and this is making me cry just a little bit haha.. I MISS YOU GUYS, CLASS OF 2010! :)
@LalaSugarBaby I miss you Lizzie Dx that night was one of epic proportions. I cried like a baby but we played sooo beautifully-I miss our class dearly, and I miss Wind Ensemble soooo much. So happy we chose this song :)
On our last concert my junior year our band director who was leaving had us learn this piece, b/c there wasn't anything more she wanted to conduct than O Magnum. I couldn't play this piece with out crying, so I sat on the second row in our band, bawling my eyes out during our concert. This is an absolute BEAUTIFUL piece, and leading up to 3:53 was/ is heart wrenching. I get goosebumps listening to this song! Thank you for posting this!
@bandgeekforever17 Don't be a baby. Try playing the long version of william tell on french horn at the END of a concert, and then complain. We literally could barely open our jaws.
@uofi12345666 I know the feeling - played first trumpet in a concert that involved the full version of the William Tell Overture, The Candide Overture, Finale from The Firebird, and about 8 other pieces.
when I played this our director said make every not as wonderful and beautifull as you can. I have to admit the piece looked easy but it was a real challenge. Keeping in tune, blending in, and of course trying to bring tears to the crowd. This is truly a wonderful piece for band and choir.
@concertbandland This is the best perf. The entrances, cut offs, and intonation are crucial. This piece is difficult and to play it well you need a maturity of sound. I have listened to many colleges but most were not mature enough. My son arranged a brass quintet version and dedicated it to me. I got to debut it. Talk about tears from an old trumpet player. This is the most beautiful piece whether choral or band. No better way to express the "Great Mystery" of God. All I can say is Amen.
