  • Foreflight looks sweet. Looks like I will not get an ipad as I thought as I don't want to deal with it frying on me. Hello Garmin 696!

  • @chipjumper Smart idea for summer flying. 696 a sweet box from what I read and seen. I loved my lowly 296 before the iPad, more so then what was in the panel of my Sundowner (Garmin 430)

  • @BeechSundowner Whats the story with the B23 and its heavyness? I will be looking at a '62 B23 with an 0-320 160hp. Is that enough HP for that plane? Everything I keep reading is that it is a dog. Also, people keep whining about how everything with Beech's are so expensive.

  • @chipjumper In my opinion, 160 underpowered, I had the 180 flavor. BE23's are nose heavy and fly like an Cessna 206 / 210 with regards to nose heavy feel. Trim your friend in the Sundowner line. My 180 HP trued out at 120 knots cruise but I chose 2300 and 110 knots for flight planning. Beech product parts are beyond expensive. Wing nav light was $40 for the same light at Lowes for 95 cents. (Another comment coming)

  • @chipjumper

If you want to get there in style and comfort, I'd recommend a Sundowner in a heart beat. If you need something faster than 110 knots, then you may want to consider another make and model. Was a perfect plane for me as I didn't need the speed, just wanted to fly and get there in comfort. One last thought on landing, if you nail your 68 final, you will grease it every time. Come in hot, you float. Porpoising is a known issue due to poor airspeed control

  • @BeechSundowner Yeah it looks like I will have no choice but to buy a piece of shit Cherokee 180. I just don't want to invest $40k+ into a plane right now. My budget is anything in the mid to high 20's. They are out there -- you just have to look for them and have cash in hand, ready to throw it down. I can't believe how many Mooney's are priced in the 30's (even with 2011 tank reseals!). Unfortunately I have under 200 hours and there is no way in hell I would get insured for a Mooney.

  • @chipjumper While buyers market, I would wait until you get what you want. Right now, with fuel going through the roof, I got out of ownership at a good time. Mooney a good line to consider, you couldn't give me a piper on a silver platter, cheap feel to them. Didn't like the layout having trim on the cabin roof? Get real, on an ILS, last thing I want to be doing is reaching UP to trim a plane. You called it when you pretty much say, insurance determines what you can buy.

  • watch?v=g69__FFPr30 best landing and takeoff ever!

  • I fly all the time with my Ipad in a 172 that gets super hot. No issues. I had BestBuy put a screen protector on that also eleminates glare. I will point out that you cannot wear the sunglasses with the polorizing film as it makes the Ipad screen disappear. Didnt know what was happening, but finally figured it out. Then had to laugh...

  • Good point about that screen reflector counteracting polarized sunglasses. Had you not mentioned it, I wouldn't have thought of it. But then again, I don't wear sunglasses when I fly as I can't find that happy medium between lens darkness and reading the instrumentation. I find it too dark to read instruments with gray and brown makes the colors too wonky when on top of IMC.

  • @BeechSundowner Have you looked at Serengeti sunglasses? They have a drivers gradient lens which has the top have a greater tint while the lower part of the lens is close to clear. I have them myself and I have no problem reading the instruments.

  • Ooohhh, never considered gradient. Need to check into those.

  • @BeechSundowner They are pretty nice, I have the Serengeti Velocity drivers gradient, they are around $120. In my opinion they are defiantly worth it. Anyway do you think the ipad is worth it? I'm currently in training for my instrument rating and i'm thinking about purchasing a 3G ipad.

  • A definite yes for the iPad, not only because of the aviation, the flexibility of what it can do outside the cockpit as well. I read ForeFlight is now promoting an external GPS antennae and as I understand it, adds the GPS feature for the non 3G iPad flavor. I personally am glad I spent the extra 100 bucks for the 3G myself for the added functionality it gives.

  • @BeechSundowner I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy one early next year, the only issue I have is weather to go with ATT, or Verizion. I also have to figure out which plan to use. Where did you read about the GPS antennae?

  • what do you mean when ipads exceed operating temperatures? I have used it in 100F+ florida heat with no issues.

  • I had it sitting on my lap in direct sunlight. I think that made it overheat and I got a exceed operational temperature limit. OAT was a comfortable 63 degrees.

This also happens to my camera when I have it in direct sunlight on the glareshield so during the summer months if I can't put something on top of it to shield it from the sun, I stop videoing mid flight and pull it off the glareshield so it can be cool down for the approach and landing.

  • Hey if you remember me I just wanted to tell you that I got a job now and as soon as I get a few thousand saved up im going to start my private pilot training, cost is actually down right now to only $6500 at my local FTO, not sure if Ill be restricted to day only with my color vision but I think i can pass the lantern test.

  • Oh too cool!!! No biggie with color vision. To be honest, 99.99 percent of my flying was daylight anyway so it really won't be a barrier.

Hope you document your progress with videos :-))

  • Beautiful view at 2:00, love those clouds. You would have probably laughed if you had seen all the VFR maps I had color photo copied and laminated (with origionals on board ofcourse) tracking my route from Central Wisc to Kansas City. Any airport I flew over or near - a complete airport diagram on the reverse side of the map for quick reference in an emergency. Totally a.r. Hey nice Piper by the way! Hope all is well with you. This flight looked like fun (but aren't they all)

  • LOL Time for me to fess up....

Before the computer was the norm and before my instrument rating, my a.r. side (I like that term BTW) I had laminated my nav log so I could use over and over again for trips I did frequently.and just filled in the time data (checkpoints always were the same)

  • @BeechSundowner Haha, you too? I'm in good company then! Yes, another great part about lamination, wipe and reuse! You should hear all the radio traffic today with folks flyin' in for EAA Monday. Amazing. Looking forward to it.
