  • I am a hearie but all my life I have said that if I could I would send my children to a deaf school, regardless if they are hearing or deaf. Ignorance breeds bigotry and knowledge breeds acceptance. Notice I did not say tolerance. I don't want TOLERANCE, which to me seems like "okay we'll put up with you bc we have to". I want ACCEPTANCE for everyone because that would mean we would be like "hey I'm me and you're you and we're different but that's cool!"

  • Yes! Deaf schools should allow hearing students for enrollment! ASL class is not the best way to learn sign language so deaf schools would be great for future interpreters.

  • I'm hearing and I went to a deaf preschool. I love the way signing makes me think.

  • i thinks they should allow hearing people go to deaf school

  • I really like the idea you're proposing. More exposure=more understanding. Being hearing myself, the only reason I have been exposed to Deaf culture is because I have taken ASL classes in college. In all of my years of school previous to college, I had only one kid that I know of who was Deaf in school.

  • Yah know i'd love to do something like that. Our local school for the deaf has an agreement with my college to let us intern there if we are asl majors, but thats probably the most you'll see of it. There are issues that remain for this utopian idea that make me sad. I adore deaf culture and find it far more interesting than my own hearing culture. Maybe one day we'll find a balance

  • I think anyone should be able to go to whatever school they want to, whether it is French, Italian, ASL etc- no matter what their first language is. I wish I was bilingual! It opens you up to another culture. I know learning a 2nd language is easier if you are immersed at a young age. Just my opinion...

  • I have always wanted to enroll in to a deaf school, but i also have a learning difficulty so i'm not sure if deaf schools will assist this issue, haha- why do you think i am learning ASL on YOUTUBE hahahaha

  • I think hearing people should be allowed in deaf schools. I have only deaf friends but am not allowed in a deaf school and they are no deaf programs in the schools here. I take home school because I can be with people I understand. Even though I grew up in a hearing family I have only deaf friends, so I am signing all the time. I think it's unfair for our deaf schools not to allow hearing.

  • I love the idea of hearing children going to a deaf school. My son can hear but I am teaching him some sign language.(I dont know a lot but I am learning more) I feel it will open doors for him and when it comes time for school and if he has the chance to met and be friends with some one who can not hear he can still "talk" to them. I had lots of friends in school who were deaf and I think if more people did not look at as a disability it would make things so much better.

  • It's currently going on. There are several hearing students in my sons ASL preschool class. They attend because they have deaf siblings or parents. It's a great idea, and one step towards hearing and deaf communities coming even closer together.

  • i think it's a great idea. I would like to establish a school that accepted siblings of Deaf and CODA. It is just a question of money. It is ironic that many people send their kids to bilingual schools but would never think of a Deaf school as a bilingual school, which it obviously is...

  • I find this an important thing to consider. Many hearies I met always so interested in learning more. At first they are just nervous because they don't know what to do or even how to act. I think it is just a lack of knowledge. They don't want to be rude and don't want to offend. I think deafies and hearies would both benefit. Same as wanting to experience Italy or japan. i think hearies in deaf schools may start new thinking.

  • I know, old video... I kinda see three different things; there's hearie family (siblings, CODA) who could probably handle it somewhat (of course sometimes you have more a AGB than a Keith Wann, but it would probably help...). There's terp students, who could benefit from it, but that's only really for college (I'm convinced we need more than just Gally and RIT :p ) - and then there's other hearies, who while they may be well-intentioned, are still going at it from a position of privilege so idk.

  • it a great idea to put hearing in deaf school.. since my children is coda i wish here in oklahoma allow coda in deaf school.. it sad to separate sisters that one of my daughter is deaf and other is hearing.. they are very close. i wish i can put my hearing daughter with deaf daughter to deaf school so my hearing daughter can learn deaf world too.. i did ask deaf school but they say no.. sadly for sisters to be separate..

  • but now i moved to Wisconsin..my HS didnt have ASL club :( so i offered to the princpal, you know wat she said...NO! Hearing people would not be involved in that...OMG! how does that makes u feel?

  • WOW, i didnt think about that...deaf institues shoud allow that, make hearing people to learn way more about deafies! I used to go to public high school in Florida..they had ASL club for after school so i decided to join to help the teachers to teach the kids..it was so much fun i didnt realize there were so much kids already joined it made me really happy so that way i can communicate with them by using ASL :) (comment overflow...continued)

  • I thought it would be cool if CODA kids or siblings of deaf siblings attend the deaf school to learn about the Deaf culture, etc. I wish my hearing sister went to Deaf school with me, but I'm really lucky cause my sister signs very well to communicate with me. About 28 years ago, we never thought about your opinion about letting Hearies attending Deaf schools.

  • i think there should be certains time where it is appropriate for hearies to attend deaf school. When? What about the hearing siblings of deaf? Why should the hearing sibling go to hearing school and deaf go to deaf school? IF the hearing sibling wanted to go to deaf school I think that would be better for the family. i knew twins and one was hearing and the other was deaf and they had to go to different schools.

  • Ideally yes, i think it would be great if hearing students could enroll into a Deaf school. I am currently attending a Deaf school. But realistically no, I dont think hearing should be able to enter bec hearing will always take over no matter what... speak.. blah, hearing world too powerful... But we can set a limit maybe like invite 10 hearing students who are really interested.. sure! why not... =)

  • wow, that girl had guts, willingly putting herself into basically a total language immersion environment. attending a school where you don't know the language is tough, but it's a great way to learn.

  • Might be good idea but lawsuit is very common thing that happens alot nowdays might be a opening to that kind of things. Imagine Spirit weeks one of hearies might under some freak accident turns up ear damaged their parents can file lawsuit and enforce the change of common traditions in spirit weeks in Deaf schools. Scary thoughts. I still think it might be cool idea. But I love my spirit weeks in Deaf school. people are crazy enuff to sue for many things.

  • Having my OH sister going to school with me would be really badass idea. the idea of welcoming hearies in deaf school should be considered postive thing but we also will have to consider the oppsite, Are they something we can accept. Mainstream had to modify their to fit people like me into their system. We will have to weight same thing modifying to make hearies fit in including sarificing some traditions or something to be reasonable for them or fit them in.

  • Yea, It will be great to have hearies to learn

about our world! so all the hearies can commuiate with daef people like in restaunt and stores, anything for everyday actity.

  • Pt.2: Also, parents putting hearing little kids in a non-hearing environment is the same as putting deaf in non-signing environment right? In your example, the girl is older decided herself, great experience. That makes all the difference, so I think age shld be an important factor.

  • At the deaf school work at (interpreter), the preschool program allows hearies - they're at least 1/2 the program. Even though its ASL only, the kids talk to each other (English is THEIR natural language) and leave deaf students and teacher out.

  • Geo--

What a wonderful story - and yes, I think hearing students should be able to go to deaf schools!!!

This generation will see that ASL is as good as any language to learn.

  • What a good story!

  • I actually think that is a really good idea. There are some Hearing people now that would like to enroll in Deaf schools, me included, that already love Deaf world and Deaf community. It should be an option to any Hearing individual.

  • They do that sometimes...Reverse mainstreaming.

Also, there's a school here in FL that has deaf students, their hearing siblings and CODAs. Pretty awesome if you ask me. But I think that "inviting" or allowing hearing students who are interested in the culture would be fabulous. I would have loved to be at that kind of school when I was in school.

I took ASL classes in high school, and am now training to be a teacher for the deaf. :)

  • Oops, the website for that school is blossomschool dot org. :)bl

  • I agree with YTLoser's comment about it being a good idea, but only if a small number of hearing were allowed to enroll in a deaf school at one time. It should be set up like a foreign exchange program. Many hearing students now take ASL classes in their local high schools, so why not? There are Spanish, French, Japanese, etc. exchanges. ASL is a language equal to any other; then why not do exchange programs like the other language classes do?

  • I think that hearing people should definatly be allowed to enroll in Deaf school. I know for me if the Deaf school over where I live let hearing people enroll, I would probably be a much better signer than I am now and actualy use ASL and not Signed English and I would be more ready for my college classes. So yea I think it would be a great Idea!!

  • Hey. I am hearing, but I spent my Spring Break last semester at Harvest Deaf Bible College, and I would agree that we should have something like that going on and have people who are in the Deaf community accepting hearing people To allow them to find interests in places they otherwise wouldn't know of

  • I think that is a GREAT idea. Recently I changed congregations from an English (hearing) to an ASL because I felt ASL was "better". It is much more exspressive. I have learned more than a language though. The number of deaf are in the minority but they are viewed as the "authorities" on language.

  • In a perfect world there would be deaf programs at all schools, so there would be no need for deaf only schools and everyone would interact with each other and get along. But sadly it is not that way. HH/deafness is a minorty, not the majority, so we are pretty much stuck being HH/Deaf in a fully hearing world. But you do bring up some good points man and I do agree with you on several of them.

  • hi.. yea i agree.. i grew up into hearing school and it challenged me and helped me understand hearing world better. so it would be nice for hearies to attend deaf school and understand them better and they can better themselves in deaf schools because they will see differently btwn hearing schools and deaf schools.. it will make them think deaf people are so COOL... i m glad that you asked...

    JUDY

  • Hey BUDDY!!..

Well Actually there hearies in Deaf School at my old Deaf school I mean LOW level hearing they do comes to my old school so. but our level as Smart. I dont see any.

    thanks

    Chris

  • only if deaf are MAJORITY and not same number or minority. That's my thought. If hearing are few, they are forced to interact with deaf. If many hearing, they can talk just to each other and ignore deaf. Not good. Same as hearing world.

  • Yeah! I agree! That would be very good idea to welcome hearing to enroll deaf school. Give them more experinece about deaf world..
