450hp is serious power out of the 306, but it takes a lot money and top shelf matching components to make it that way, but here on youtube everyone has 500 horses under their hoods for less than three grand so I guess my 331 86 notch with 371 rear wheel hp would be ate alive.
@stangcrazy306 Back before they had such a huge aftermarket supply of cylinder heads, it was tough to get 450 hp from a 300 incher. But they make it pretty easy these days. CarCraft Magazine took a bone stock HO 302 using even the stock camshaft, bolted on AFR heads, and got 400 hp and 380 ft/lbs of torque on the dyno. Since youtube doesn't let you post links, you can google CarCraft's engine build and read it, it's pretty interesting, and shows how important the cylinder head is for performance
@AmericanThunder Don't believe what you read in the mags. They get paid to advertise for paying sponsors. A stock HO 302 with a stock camshaft and AFR 165's will not make 400hp in the real world. I have built several combanations myself and I know what it takes to make 400hp from a 302.
That engine might have actually made 370-380hp without the accessories. Add the alt., water pump, power steering and ac back on it and it would make 320-330hp in the real world.
I don't have a video yet since its not in the car, but we've built a 400hp 302 for my '65 mustang. Wasn't any issue gettin the horses up there, its all about the right parts and the right tuning, thats all.
you are right BhanRacing .030 is nothing but cleaning up the cylinder just to get a new ring seal you would have to get in about .060 to see any hp difference if any you may get a little extra torque out of the deal! Most of the times you see a block punched .060 is if there is a lot of money in the block, block is hard to find etc etc. Best way on small block Ford is get a 351W block especially if you like NOS 302 block will crack around crank if sprayed with 250 +shot
just bought a 1964 F100 thinking it had the 289 engine in it. I was wrong Know I dont know what it is. !st time for me. Tried lookin on the block and on the heads but no luck. Had a guy tell me it was a 306 but had others tell me no such thing, but i see here it does excist. How can I make SURE its a 306 i have???
remove the intake from the motor and it should say on top of the block, that is where mine reads 302, yours should say 302 as well, that guy might tell you its a 306 because the block may have been bored .030 over.
450hp from 306" is 1.47hp/ci Thats pretty stout. The fact that its bored .030 over will allow the heads to breathe slightly better, but the power gained from doing so, is more from the few added cubes. You could get more from a 306. Car Craft took a junkyard 302 and put John Kaase heads on it, witch have huge ports and valves. It made 513hp@7800 Thats what it takes to make such power with a small engine. Lots of rpm. But most normally aspirated 302s that you see, will make about this or less.
450hp from a 302 .030" over is actually extraordinary. 302s make anywhere from 160hp-180hp factory. Most "built" 302s range from 300-350 on stock bore, a .030" overbore helps but not a whole lot.
Stroke that same motor from 302/306 to 347, and you easily get into the 400-420 range. About as much as you get without spending rediculous amounts of money.
You are right about RPMs being crucial, but Compression is even more important on small block V8s. 11.1 is quite high vs 8.5:1 factory.
actually stock 302's either had 210hp with a 2 barrel and 9:1 compression or 230hp with a 4 barrel and 10.5 compression. i have a book on all domestic engines. but yeah a 347 =400hp + no problem
ummm... actually through the 70's 302's with two barrels i think were 143 hp and about 160's in the early 80's till 85 when the 4barrel was used and was at i believe 210
@DeanMLFlame All depends what's in it, boaring it dont make that much. Start with a good set of heads and match your parts from there wheather u want lowend or highend. plus 347 makes the walls thin on a stock block 302.
@sick2003f150 A 347 kit has 3.40" stroke and a 4.030" bore. .030" overbore is well within the safe range of a stock 302 block. The major downside to a 347 is the terrible rod to stroke ratio, since the 3.40" stroke and the short deck height limits the rod length. I always recommend a max of 3.25" stroke when using a stock 302 block if you plan to run the motor on the street.
If you're running over 7000rpm a tunnel ram is the only way to go

@Craig123Jesus: Man I'd love to drop that engine in something that weighs no more than 2500lbs.

How did you get this to displace 306 cubic inches??
You must have barely stroked the 302...I'm assuming that was the base motor. Or did you bore it out a couple millimeters each cylinder??
beepandbop 1 year ago
@beepandbop its a 302 cubic inch motor with an over bore of .030 the extra bore makes it a 306

@beepandbop 0.30 over bore

@Fisko242 see if you can check the VIN on your truck and it should be confirmed what kind of engine it had.
beepandbop 1 year ago
@Fisko242 306 is a base 302 block with a .030 over bore your pistons should say .030 on tops or you can use a micro... to measure the bore

306 can make higher #'s than that, considering a 289 can make 350hp with the right cam, carb and compression

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but do most 306ci. motors make these kind of numbers. Specifically a 302 bored .30 over to a 306.
