  • I am from Ohio, and I love the Residents....and conway Twitty too

  • Dave Sanborn's show was the BEST.. I'm a huge Residents fan, but this is kinda stupid. Hiram Bullock was sure tearin' it up on the guitar (RIP.)

  • @scmm42 I've seen a video of Pere Ubu on Night Music as well. Makes me wonder who else they had on the show.

  • @rpaxon Check out my channel. I've posted about 100 clips from Night Music. No Pere Ubu, unfortunately.

  • Moira Scar

  • This is the greatest thing I've ever seen!

  • I remember seeing this on TV. Was the the same episode as the Sun Ra Arkestra?

  • The show did not get cancelled because of Conway Twitty and anyone implying it did is wrong. I'm sure once Family Guy is again cancelled some ass-hat will say the same thing about it. Guess what?! Again, they'll be wrong. Conway added to this show just like he adds (in a strange way...) To Family Guy. He was a great guy and a great performer. R.I.P. Mr. T!

  • I remember the night this was shown on the Night Music for the first time, me and my friends were in just stunned amazement and quite thankful to David Sanborn for helping to make this performance happen. Watched every episode and was VERY sad to see it cancelled. You would NEVER get the diversity of artists they had on a show featuring music today thats for sure!

  • yeah, but the residents don't really "play" with twitty ... they're just dancing. i want to hear conway singing with the residents backing him

  • A lot of the backing look like they're from Bootsy's Rubber Band

  • "I stepped over and asked him why, he wore sunglasses late at night, he said when you cool boy, the sun shines all the time. when you cool, the sun shines all the time. "

I wonder what kind of sunglasses the Residents could wear... I mean, their eyes are constantly exposed to the sun, so they could probably use some protection

    .

  • You see America... This is why we cant have nice things.

  • Never. EVER. Thought I would see Conway sharing a stage with the Residents.

  • Saturday night on field street, Old man plays the blues, He made the guitar talk, duckwalk, His two tone wing-tipped shoes He wore a big pair of black sunglasses, biggest I ever seen, the man wasn't blind, he was keepin his eye, on every little sweet young thing, I stepped over and asked him why, he wore sunglasses late at night, he said when you cool boy, the sun shines all the time. when you cool, the sun shines all the time.
  • @dinnerforce That's Beale Street.

  • I'm slightly disappointed that The Residents didn't actually do much of anything except just sort of dancing. I had heard about this performance years ago, but I had the impression that The Residents actually backed Conway or something. Oh well, still kinda cool.

  • A little background- In the late 80s, Michelob Beer wanted to get a hipper image. Besides sponsoring some rock acts and spending a lot on advertising, they bankrolled this show for the entire two years of its existence. Two years was enough for Michelob, and that was that. Towards the end the powers that be for the show considered going the PBS route but decided against it. The Residents had absolutelly nothing to do with the show's end.

  • Conway fit in with any type of music, & he gave everything he had into every song he sang. This is the 3rd song I watched with him & this band, Proud Mary was removed. The respect they had for each other is great. Everyone who knew Conway, knows he sang & worked every song he did & The Residents knew that.

To say Conway was the reason the show was canceled because of Conway being on the show well ......hmmmmm wonder where that came from.

  • Wow, I had no idea Conway Twitty performed with The Residents.

  • LOL what a contrast of styles,, cool!

  • I thought you couldn't get a flashback from mushrooms. Guess I'm wrong.

  • i 've recently discovered Conway ...here in Italy it's almost unknown...he was so good...sweet music!gotta love this song!

  • was hopin to hear more of the residents and slightly less conway...whatever....

  • Oh ya he is very COOOOOOOOOOOOL TKS FOR POSTING

  • Producer- John HEAD

  • O...K...

  • I love watching Conway w/The Residents & they most certainly introduced him because he was on their show.......

Conway was lover of all music it's a shame they removed him doing "Proud Mary." And this is the 2nd song he did w/The Residents on their show.

Love the video thanks for sharing!

A Die Hard Conway Fan From NE PA. Jeanette

  • @jeanettea1 Whoa, he covered "Proud Mary"? I gotta go find this. Thanks for the heads up.

  • Hahahaha, this is great, I live down the street from where ol' Conway lived. Too bad it couldn't be the same situation with the Residents!

  • T.V. Land Needs This Again!

  • Here's Conway Twitty. And let's not mention the residents...(sarcasm). A shame they weren't introduced.

  • No, it's perfect.

The spotlight means nothing to them.

  • Rock on Twitty

  • what...the fuck?

  • ladies and gentlemen, mr. conway twitty and... the residents?!

  • lol conway and the residents

  • I really miss Conway. His death was a tremendous loss. He was a wonderful person and such an accomplished performer and singer. He was the greatest.

  • america needs night music again

  • this would be a good clip to use next time family guy makes a conway twitty aside. media rights?

  • Thats what I was thinking.

  • wat

  • I love it, you made my week!!!

  • That face in the background always busts me up!

  • great. there's this. and at the same time there's southpark. an episode about giant guinea pigs taking over the earth.

    FUCK normal!

  • haha yeah guinea-saurus rex....awesome

  • how did this happen? worth askin' don't ya think?

  • >> how did this happen? worth askin' don't ya think?

Definitely worth asking. This is from the sadly defunct Night Music program in 1990. David Sanborn was the host and he would get lots of very different musicians together and they would do solo sets and perform together. The guests included Conway Twitty and The Residents on this episode.

For the finale usually the guests would perform together. One of the Residents once claimed this performance is why the show was canceled.

  • Also, check out my channel for many more amazing performances from Night Music, including more Conway and more Residents.

  • Really? Why on earth would they cancel the show because of this? It's a hoot!

  • @scmm42

Why would this performance have gotten the show cancelled? This is awesome.

  • @Pacfanweb I'm not saying this performance actually got this show cancelled, just that one of the Residents once claimed that. Don't believe everything you hear from the Residents.

My personal theory on why this show was cancelled is that it was just too high quality to exist on American TV.

  • @scmm42

All comes down to ratings, I guess......glad this performance still exists.

They should release a DVD of this show.....love to see this in high quality.

  • @scmm42

I think the show got cancelled because they had such wide variety of musicians and singers, it didn't find an audience that accepting of the challenge array of styles.

Wikipedia gives an episode listing everyone who appearred.

I wish I knew about it when it airred.

  • @Pacfanweb - the comment by the Resident is called "sarcasm".. :-)

  • @almostacowboy77

    Welcome to last year

  • Just writing in to say I won't be writing in. This odd juxtaposition has left me speechless.

  • Now you know....musicians...show biz....vaudeville....boogie....

    when you're cool.

  • why are the residents there?

  • first time i heard about this dude was on family guy, but i can tell you somethin' - this guy is cool!

  • Those clips make me wish they'd play the whole song.

  • I saw this when it originally aired on NBC. It changed my life, and I can say made me the man I am today! Thanks...

  • what do you mean by it changed your life?

  • I think conway is one of the very very few that could have pulled off a Tom Waits tunes album...

  • Conway was one of a kind...he had a rocker's sensibility wrapped up inside a mega-successful country singer. For those unaware he was a rock/pop singer in the 1950's and early 1960's before going country in 1965 and the rest is history. he passed away in 1993 at the age of 59, a few months shy of hitting 60...so doing the math...he's 57 in this clip...and singing like that...it was incredible. You all should check out his hair-raising performance of "Heartache Tonight" and other songs.

  • Was lucky enough to see all the shows, and taped most of them, I wish I still had them :( THIS was a memorable show, and those guys (residence) look real cute in the back, and the "exagerated" movements . . . hehe. -MAVIII (cool to see Hiram Bullock playin' guitar on show, after he left Paul's band on "NBC" David Letterman)

  • They look so adorable in their giant boxy eyeballs and top-hats.

  • I know. I want one.

  • I went to college with this farm boy from rural Ohio who made fun of me because I listened to weird music like the Residents. I asked him what music he liked and he named Conway Twitty among other country artists. I would love to have been able to show him this.

  • hey, is that a young Bill Cosby on guitar?? heh heh...

    (yeah I know, it's Hiram...)

great show for eclectic musical tastes.

  • It's beautiful - Twitty and Residents. Makes me wanna weep. Good song too.

  • I saw a biography on Conway years ago, hilarious, "What I love best is my Pacer automobile." Talk about down to Earth....

  • Oh look out conway gets his blues on. Neat

  • Conway gets his blues on and eyeballs dance erotically in the background-for my money it doesn't get any better. I celebrate the guys entrire catalogue.

  • But what colour is Mr. Skull? :)

  • conway couldn't sing? ah, who do you like?

  • He had more #1 singles than any artist in any category (a record that still stands) so obviously a few people thought he could sing.

  • So strange its...almost normal.

  • I'm neither a Conway Twitty or a big Residents fan, but this video really is as close to true art that I can think of.

  • this is surreal

  • conway twitty .. a time life 4am stoner legend

  • When you're cool the sun shines all the time.

  • This is unbelievable. You Yanks are the tops!

  • Wonderful cheeze - fucking riot

  • Conway did what he wanted and did it very well.

  • A pretty strange and wonderful moment in videotaped rock'n'roll history!!

  • I've been a Rez fan for 30 years. This is the coolest freaking thing I've ever seen.

  • Conway Twitty was on the Dope...

  • WOW....I never knew about this...cool..no when your cool

  • This is the first time I have heard this , Awesome

    mistyblue

  • this is just so awkward.. the residents....with conway... this has GOT to be the most interesting twist in the music history

  • More so than Hendrix opening up for the Monkees.

  • much more so... this is insane...

  • This confirms there aren't that many 'Cool' folks where i live! Talking 'bout overcast weather all the time!

  • May the sunshine greet you in the mourning & leave them blues behing. Been trying to get to that place my whole life & hope to reach it before my time is done here.

  • Maybe people like us ough to consider moving to Hawai!

  • Naw! They got that real bad DOG there! as seen on TV! Not that I watch much.

  • Huh? Please explain! Duh me... ; )

  • The Bounty Hunter Dog,Cassy!

  • Btw way Jens!!! Sho hope that ain't a comment on that bad Rat of a Dog buddy.... er else!!!!! LOLOLOL! Crackin' up in Brussels... where we ain't even gotta Dowg dang it! How low can we get huh!

  • This is from the David Sanborn show from 12 years or so ago, it was like a musical variety show with like four musical guests per show that were very different as the footage might indicate. I think it ran one season.

  • i wanna eye ball costume....

  • how the hell did that happen?

  • Oh my God. How can anyone NOT like this song!?

I mean, c'mon... it's Conway Twitty... and The Residents!!

But seriously, what makes this song work is everyone plays it straight. I mean, Conway Twitty might've been thinking "what's the deal with The Residents and these dancing eyeballs and stuff" and The Residents might've been thinking "hey, what are we doing backing Conway Twitty?" but they all went for it and it actually worked!

Good stuff. Must've been a good old show...

  • Yeah really. It's Conway Twitty, and the Residents. 'nuff said.

  • The whole series was great (I saw this bit when it first aired). Why the HELL isn't this show on DVD? C'mon, Broadway Video, do we REALLY need another Best of Chris Farley compilation?

  • Just goes to to show you how Conway was good singing any type of music w/ anyone. I think this video is just great! They are all having a great time & it shows! Die hard Conway fan in N.E. PA

  • ha ha the residents. classic. i think this show as called night flight or something. they had some good episodes like sun ra with sonic youth, black flag one moment followed by carla bley.

  • Why the hell would the Residents be standing on that stage? This is weird!

  • Aliens are taking over the world and i love it.

  • The Residents. Huh.

  • Notice how Conway calls the guitarist 'boy' near the end of the video. I'm just sayin'.

  • Haha

  • I think you're reading a little too much into that.

  • I, on the other hand, am a little too old to remember what it was called - but I used to watch it all the time. I think it was called The Night Music.

  • What show was this? It looks really super 80s, but had kick ass bands instead of bad new wave/fake metal crap (I like good new wave and real metal, BTW). Is it British or Canadian or something, 'cause I would have heard of it otherwise.

  • It was American, but (checks your age in profile) you're a little too young to remember it. :)

  • Thanks, I looked it up and was called Sunday Night then Michelob presents Night Music.

  • sometimes bad is BAD! This is awesome! very very good!

Who-da thunk!? Thanks for posting this SCMM42

  • what the fuck is this shit

  • Conway Twitty has the wierdest head on that stage. And the best name.

  • good joke

  • Hahaha, thats just amazing....

  • One of the craziest things I've ever seen. LOL!

  • The Residents are the best performers in the known Universe

  • Ha,ha,ha! What the f*ck?!? Greatness!

  • this show was the best music program on american tv this of course meant airing it at 2 am on sunday nights....

  • This WAS a very ambitious program , with the aforementioned artists , plus Screamin'Jay Hawkins , Hank Ballard and The Midniters , Pere Ubu and others. This , however , is a real milestone! tHANKS.

  • This is fuckin' amazing. Conway Twitty and The Residents it's mindblowing and completely unexpected.

  • Beautifully surreal! And a cool song, too.

  • This is insane. Only The Residents!

  • Oh, wow. Awesome video! I haven't heard this song in a little while- alas, my "Still in Your Dreams" tape is old and I can't play it anymore since my tape player broke. Conway is and always will be the best country singer ever.

  • what the fuck purpose was there in putting the eye-ball dudes on the stage?

    great band, visual distraction.

further proof at how stupid that fuckin band was.

  • your thick stop thinking it will only hurt more

you twat go and read some structuralism theory !!

  • I saw this when it first aired and it's still mind blowing. The show was broadcast on Sunday at like midnite thus ensuring its cancellation. Sonic Youth, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and John Zorn were among the artists that performed. Host Dave Sanborn would get everybody to jam together making for some surprizing combinations.

  • Very cool jam. great post

  • What did the residents there?

  • i love the residents

  • The Residents--now that is cool!

  • GOOGLE the Residents IMAGES These are not really them

  • It is The Residents, they actually performed "Teddy Bear" and "From The Plains To Mexico" earlier on the program. Both those performances are on YouTube as well.

  • This is the Residents during their Cube-E phase. They dressed up as cubist eyeballs for this period.

  • Thats great. can i buy this song on cd?

  • gros garage !

  • WOW.. I have never seen or heard of this. Conway was great all the way to the end.

  • How delightfully strange, why isn't this show still on?

  • They didn't have many mainstream artists on, so advertisers didn't want to spend any money on it. That's capitalism (boooo!)

  • Thank you letting the credits finish, this was in 1990!! Coming down to the end for Conway.

  • WOW!! He was above 'cool'. This is an example of why I love this man. What a treasure!!

  • The old letterman show guitarist rockin with Conway. Cool

  • His name's Hiram Bullock, and yeah, he's a bad dude.
