The show did not get cancelled because of Conway Twitty and anyone implying it did is wrong. I'm sure once Family Guy is again cancelled some ass-hat will say the same thing about it. Guess what?! Again, they'll be wrong. Conway added to this show just like he adds (in a strange way...) To Family Guy. He was a great guy and a great performer. R.I.P. Mr. T!
I remember the night this was shown on the Night Music for the first time, me and my friends were in just stunned amazement and quite thankful to David Sanborn for helping to make this performance happen. Watched every episode and was VERY sad to see it cancelled. You would NEVER get the diversity of artists they had on a show featuring music today thats for sure!
"I stepped over and asked him why, he wore sunglasses late at night, he said when you cool boy, the sun shines all the time. when you cool, the sun shines all the time. "
I wonder what kind of sunglasses the Residents could wear... I mean, their eyes are constantly exposed to the sun, so they could probably use some protection
Saturday night on field street, Old man plays the blues, He made the guitar talk, duckwalk, His two tone wing-tipped shoes He wore a big pair of black sunglasses, biggest I ever seen, the man wasn't blind, he was keepin his eye, on every little sweet young thing, I stepped over and asked him why, he wore sunglasses late at night, he said when you cool boy, the sun shines all the time. when you cool, the sun shines all the time.
I'm slightly disappointed that The Residents didn't actually do much of anything except just sort of dancing. I had heard about this performance years ago, but I had the impression that The Residents actually backed Conway or something. Oh well, still kinda cool.
A little background- In the late 80s, Michelob Beer wanted to get a hipper image. Besides sponsoring some rock acts and spending a lot on advertising, they bankrolled this show for the entire two years of its existence. Two years was enough for Michelob, and that was that. Towards the end the powers that be for the show considered going the PBS route but decided against it. The Residents had absolutelly nothing to do with the show's end.
Conway fit in with any type of music, & he gave everything he had into every song he sang. This is the 3rd song I watched with him & this band, Proud Mary was removed. The respect they had for each other is great. Everyone who knew Conway, knows he sang & worked every song he did & The Residents knew that.
To say Conway was the reason the show was canceled because of Conway being on the show well ......hmmmmm wonder where that came from.
>> how did this happen? worth askin' don't ya think?
Definitely worth asking. This is from the sadly defunct Night Music program in 1990. David Sanborn was the host and he would get lots of very different musicians together and they would do solo sets and perform together. The guests included Conway Twitty and The Residents on this episode.
For the finale usually the guests would perform together. One of the Residents once claimed this performance is why the show was canceled.
@Pacfanweb I'm not saying this performance actually got this show cancelled, just that one of the Residents once claimed that. Don't believe everything you hear from the Residents.
My personal theory on why this show was cancelled is that it was just too high quality to exist on American TV.
I think the show got cancelled because they had such wide variety of musicians and singers, it didn't find an audience that accepting of the challenge array of styles.
Wikipedia gives an episode listing everyone who appearred.
Conway was one of a kind...he had a rocker's sensibility wrapped up inside a mega-successful country singer. For those unaware he was a rock/pop singer in the 1950's and early 1960's before going country in 1965 and the rest is history. he passed away in 1993 at the age of 59, a few months shy of hitting 60...so doing the math...he's 57 in this clip...and singing like that...it was incredible. You all should check out his hair-raising performance of "Heartache Tonight" and other songs.
Was lucky enough to see all the shows, and taped most of them, I wish I still had them :( THIS was a memorable show, and those guys (residence) look real cute in the back, and the "exagerated" movements . . . hehe. -MAVIII (cool to see Hiram Bullock playin' guitar on show, after he left Paul's band on "NBC" David Letterman)
I went to college with this farm boy from rural Ohio who made fun of me because I listened to weird music like the Residents. I asked him what music he liked and he named Conway Twitty among other country artists. I would love to have been able to show him this.
Conway gets his blues on and eyeballs dance erotically in the background-for my money it doesn't get any better. I celebrate the guys entrire catalogue.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Country guys like him were so terrible, they were no better a singer than almost anyone's drunk Uncle Bill. It's like the only way they succeeded is that they had the guts to appear in public with such ugly over-tailored outfits and big goofy high hair.
May the sunshine greet you in the mourning & leave them blues behing. Been trying to get to that place my whole life & hope to reach it before my time is done here.
Btw way Jens!!! Sho hope that ain't a comment on that bad Rat of a Dog buddy.... er else!!!!! LOLOLOL! Crackin' up in Brussels... where we ain't even gotta Dowg dang it! How low can we get huh!
This is from the David Sanborn show from 12 years or so ago, it was like a musical variety show with like four musical guests per show that were very different as the footage might indicate. I think it ran one season.
I mean, c'mon... it's Conway Twitty... and The Residents!!
But seriously, what makes this song work is everyone plays it straight. I mean, Conway Twitty might've been thinking "what's the deal with The Residents and these dancing eyeballs and stuff" and The Residents might've been thinking "hey, what are we doing backing Conway Twitty?" but they all went for it and it actually worked!
The whole series was great (I saw this bit when it first aired). Why the HELL isn't this show on DVD? C'mon, Broadway Video, do we REALLY need another Best of Chris Farley compilation?
Just goes to to show you how Conway was good singing any type of music w/ anyone. I think this video is just great! They are all having a great time & it shows! Die hard Conway fan in N.E. PA
ha ha the residents. classic. i think this show as called night flight or something. they had some good episodes like sun ra with sonic youth, black flag one moment followed by carla bley.
I, on the other hand, am a little too old to remember what it was called - but I used to watch it all the time. I think it was called The Night Music.
What show was this? It looks really super 80s, but had kick ass bands instead of bad new wave/fake metal crap (I like good new wave and real metal, BTW). Is it British or Canadian or something, 'cause I would have heard of it otherwise.
This WAS a very ambitious program , with the aforementioned artists , plus Screamin'Jay Hawkins , Hank Ballard and The Midniters , Pere Ubu and others. This , however , is a real milestone! tHANKS.
Oh, wow. Awesome video! I haven't heard this song in a little while- alas, my "Still in Your Dreams" tape is old and I can't play it anymore since my tape player broke. Conway is and always will be the best country singer ever.
I saw this when it first aired and it's still mind blowing. The show was broadcast on Sunday at like midnite thus ensuring its cancellation. It is The Residents, they actually performed "Teddy Bear" and "From The Plains To Mexico" earlier on the program. Both those performances are on YouTube as well.
