Also consider: If Korea hadn't been occupied after the Pacific War by ANY outside force, the resulting undivided Korea would have become a communist country as soon as the Japanese had left. No question. That was just the politics of the time in Korea, especially in the countryside. What to think?

@surjl0827 I think it was a "miracle" how South Korea's economy grew, but by no counts will it be the third richest country in 2050 (PPP or GDP, per capita or nominal - besides, current growth rates may not reflect future growth rates), which might make people think you're just making up statistics on the spot. Also .. the UK isn't even in the top five richest countries .. on any counts as well.

Japan is an island and because of that, transportation costs are excessively high and contribute to Japan's declining exports. Imagine this, a underground high speed tunnel linking Japan and a United Korea that would connect to a land network of transportation leading to Europe, Russia, China, Africa. Why do you think Hyundai didn't even slow production when many of your car parts factories shut down? Additionally, the parts we do need are mostly from China. From Japan, we get some of the more advanced parts or finished products.

Now after the earthquake, the Korean companies that do need Japanese parts are either building factories to construct their own parts or they're outsourcing to China and other Asian countries. Since Korean companies and Japanese companies are in direct competition, the earthquake has given Korean companies a very significant trump card. So, while Japan benefits a little, the costs are far greater than the benefits

I don't think that it will be the world's 3rd richest country in 2050, because of its aging population. By then most people will be like 80 years old. South Korea has pretty much peaked now, unless if they unite with North Korea. S Korea is still poorer than Canada, Spain and Mexico.

The Korean war was between Russia and USA fighting between Communism and Democracy. USA's sole purpose was not for South Koreans' interest, we all know, as USA tried to protect Japan, Australia, NZ, South East Asians from becoming possibly communist countries due to geographical reason.

President Park did a good job in planting such hope and confidence.
