Depending on your age, you may remember very well when The Republican Party controlled The White House for 12 years from 1981-1993, with Presidents Ronald Reagan and George (H.W.) Bush. John McCain was a Republican version of John Kerry's 2004 campaign. He went on record saying he would change his vote on an immigration reform bill that he wrote. He also said he would oppose a climate change bill that he wrote. McCain pandered to George Bush and his people in a desperate attempt to win the election and for no other reason...

Over the course of the last four years, he changed his positions on Bush policies that he had opposed previously, the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, specifically. He opposed them in 2003, calling them " reckless and irresponsible " during wartime but in 2008, he vowed to make them permanent. He also was not cheerleading the war in Iraq in the early stages like he was in 2008. And he supported Donald Rumsfeld's efforts until after he resigned as Secretary of Defense.

In 2001, John McCain contemplated switching parties but decided against it because polling showed he wouldn't win the Democratic nomination in 2004. He also contemplated staying a Republican and either being John Kerry's running mate or crossing over and endorsing John Kerry. He stayed true to the GOP in 2004 because it was his only shot at a second presidential run. The John McCain of 1986 to 2000 wouldn't support the John McCain of 2004 forward.

He did polling to see if he could get the nomination if he ran as a Democrat and there was nothing happening, so he cut a deal with George Bush's team to get his campaign staff to support him in 2008 because he thought the same people who smeared him could elect him. Didn't happen. Go back to the Senate and retire.
