  • I came here looking to listen to festive overture because we're playing it in high school wind ensemble. I have NEVER felt so affected, stunned, or especially OUTCLASSED in my entire life. That was the most astonishingly perfect performance I have ever heard.

  • Piccolo player deserves a drink

  • That was ok for school kids!

  • Bravo!!!!

  • This is Juilliard, of course they would win!

  • what is up with that pathetic applause!! this is amazing!!! great arrangement and amazing trumpet players!!!

  • @hunky2munky Everyone was too stunned by the sheer perfection to ruin the moment by clapping.

  • Do I really need to comment on your performance good or bad? NO! But I did enjoy it very much. It took me back to my high school days. We played FO my freshman year in marching band. Of course we didnt play the entire composition but all of the main phrases. Thanks for the pristine flashback!

  • Impressively in tune, nice!

  • amazing.

  • Trumpets rules! :D

  • that's just... so amazingly amazing and FAST and amazing

  • i used to play trumpet, then i ended up in high school with the guy that arranged this. I quit playing. =P congrats to caleb for still being an outstanding musician.

  • 神すぎるー!!

  • lol wut? how is this even possible?

  • colin seig is my private lesson teacher

  • just memorizing this would be a pain in the ASS!

  • jesusususususus christsitsitasit689jyasdynas5tmw

  • i dont play the trumpet. never touched one. but i appreciate skill and this was full of it.

  • This takes one thing.

    Practice practice and more practice.

  • @TheFumbleberry lol no it doesnt, dude when i picked up a trumpet for the first time i hit a tripple high c omfg so easy.......-_-

  • My thought was, "This is Juilliard so it better be good." Wasn't dissapointed.

  • I play the trumpet I will be posting a vid on my trumpet.

  • Is there anyway I can download an mp3 version of this so I can enjoy it on my ipod as I cruise in my car?

  • my mouth dropped - sooo beautifulll.

so this is what great trumpet players sound like!

  • these people were born with with a trumpet in their mouth :P

  • 1st chair Trumpet Sophomore.. I have a long ways to go..

  • and to think i could one day be like that , itll all start with just first chair in a iago jr.high band

  • thats freakin amazing cant wait til i can hopefully play this ggod

  • bloody amazing!

  • I need practice now

  • The audience sucks- where's the applause?

  • @chilton98 lol I thought that too. Maybe the applause seems lame because the trumpets were so much louder than people clapping? :P

  • it's unbelieveable! what an amazing sound!

  • i lovee trumpets! just look at my username... where can i get this song?!

  • starting about the 5:00 mark, the pic player bruises his brain stem with his mouthpiece. ARMSTRONG BUDDY!!!

  • OMG! i've not touched my tpt for a freaking long time. will take me forever to master this song if i ever do.

  • Hey listen to this pls... its awesome :)

  • this needs to be in HD.

  • I think im gonna go practice now....

  • Wow, cool!

Hey, can you check out my ballad that I played at my 8th grade jazz band? Please, I worked very hard on it!

  • So much time and effort goes into this. Arranging and rehearsing for hours on end. It so impresses me.

  • Impressive! Can't help wondering how this piece might have sounded with three Kanstul 955 or 1088 tenor trumpets in Bb and a Kanstul 190 baritone bugle in G for the bass (a full suite of 1100 series Herald Trumpets would require a LOT of space on stage).

  • I wanna learn the piccolo trumpet! (I have ever since my band teacher showed me this video!) The piccolo trumpets are like the super tiny ones.

  • I'm jealous :/

  • did they win?

  • This is such an awesome arrangement. And so well played.

all those notes speak! finesse all the way hahaha.

  • Easyyyy.

    TOTALLY JOKING!!!!

  • @iball78217 it's called MUSIC JUICE! ;P hahaha

  • nice playing of those trumpeters

  • The piccolo player has some serious chops.

  • Wow!

    (15 people play sax)

  • fantastic

  • This is how trumpets should sound!

  • this is an orgy to the ear

  • Too good.

  • This is amazing. Too bad you never have 8 amazing trumpet players in the same room that actually want to play something like this. Great job.

  • @hichez50 I want to play this, so does most of our section.

  • why does that one guy in the middle not have a trumpet stand if he can afford to go to juliardf dont you thinkhe can afford a trumpet stand unless hes there on some kinda scholarship

  • Katie i love your picc sound. For real, omg.

  • Holy crap. This makes me glad I played trumpet.

  • @carnyzzle

Me too, you never see a bassoon or low brass ensemble doing this. It's all about the trumpets.

  • @carnyzzle

Me too. You never see a low brass or a flute ensemble being able to pull this off to this extent with such a great orchestral sound. It's all about the trumpet.

  • technically perfect! reminds me of the all-island band in japan.

  • Yes but these people also practice like 7 hours a day lol.

But now I want a Piccolo Tumpet so Dang Bad!

Thats what those higher ones are and I want a C trumpet now too lol!

I want to go to Juliard but for singing instead of trumpet lol

Would never happen since it is like 35000 a year lol

  • :O

  • really well played....

  • Omfg so freaking pro!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • wow...just...wow

  • So they won?

  • 15 people go to Berklee

  • I just jizzed in my pants.

  • @iball78217 it would be worse if they were horn players... :P

  • 15 people are "thumb-directon-blind"

  • lol im a Trumpet- Chick no seriously im the only one in my grade

  • @Person12084 5:36 check it out, but they still were amazing. HOW DID THEY MEMORIZE THAT?!?!?!?!?!

  • @MsDeidra99 Memorization is just playing it a HELL of a lot (correctly) until it's pounded into your memory. After doing it a crapload of times, you just get a feel for what you should be doing...that's why I can still (sorta) play a show I did in 1984. For the same chart with even MORE memorization, plug SCV 1985 Finals Runthrough - Pt 1 into the YouTube search engine and enjoy. (don't mind the differing key...the horns only had 2 valves back then...and were in the key of G)

  • so did they win?

  • @molecular360 yea, and they won '10 too. Julliard trumpets are machines, almost robots. It's un-natural what they do...

  • did i just hear 128th notes?

  • The guys on the left turned their backs to the audience just like Miles. Seriously, that was cool.

  • @iball78217 atleast it wasn't a tuba octet

  • 15 people play flute

  • ...O M G AHSDJHVLKJFNVKSGDRLUFDN= 5:46

  • i didn't think festive overture could get better.

  • Some day i'll be able to play like that, i'm sure...i mean, i hope

  • Nice job on the picc, Colin! As a fellow picc player, I can appreciate those chops.

  • Very good for a college ensemble. However, time is iffy quite a bit and the opening felt very stiff and uninspired. You wouldn't know it's called "festive" until the fast part starts, and relying on tempo to correct your style isn't really ideal. Certainly still a solid performance though.

  • @Aezelll But this is how Festive Overture is supposed to sound...

  • @Aezelll You say for a college ensemble like if it gets better. The Julliard trumpets are best in the nation and I wouldn't feel far fetched if they rank top 5 in the world. At their Junior year of school most of the musicians are so well educated and talented that when speaking in technical terms match if not surpass professional players.

  • I love the guy who has the melody at 1:15ish haha. He moves funny.

  • ...this is what you get when your school is basically learning your instrument.

  • It's about time vaginas started to professionally play brass instruments. Seriously, looking at some of the classical recording on Youtube, it's a huge sasuage fest. Trumpet-Chick power! ;)

  • incredible

  • I didn't know a trumpet could do that.

  • who ever sad they suck.....they must be a woodwnd player....

  • beautiful! :D

  • Who ever dislikes this needs their brain examined. :D

  • @4everFCW That has to be the dumbest and most ignorant statement I have ever heard. I can't even begin to try to comprehend where you began the thought process for that comment. Nobody I heard in this group is playing too loud. The dynamics sound great to me. They blend tone and pitch to perfection, and you can tell they listen back to one another. You can just say such outlandish comments like "they're not very good musicians" without actually understanding what you're talking about.

  • @4everFCW Okay, that's definitely one of the dumbest thing I've heard. I could clearly hear the distinction between their dynamics. They weren't just playing loud, loud, loud. They have wonderful blend, tone, and dynamic contrast. So please don't make comments like that unless you actually understand what you're talking about. (: They did wonderfully.

  • Just shows that the only important instrument in a band is trumpet! Hehe

  • were playing this in band, and omg, this is phenomenal with only 8 people. we will have approximately 100 and it wont sound as amazing as this. fantastic job, wow.

  • That was so good it made me sick

  • Eh?!! OhMiGoh!!!!! XD

  • Anybody know how I can get in contact with Caleb Hudson?

  • Did 11 people really dislike this??

  • @ SKM980

He is from Jupiter. I met him last year over a cup of tea. He says he likes it much better on planet Earth because he does not have to worry about Zargons chasing him with angry penguins.

  • Just what planet is that picc player from, anyway?

  • This octet just laid it all out there, making this exquisite performance, and the audience is just...meh

  • so how old are the people playing this?

  • Awesome........ That was just amazing!!!!!

  • i'm pretty sure every trumpet player who listened to this just came.

  • @blinkme478 I'm a saxaphone musician and i think i just came myself XD

  • @blinkme478

    twice

  • Very exciting performance. THIS is what youtube vids should be like!

  • Picc player gets a bit of a shrill sound at 4:04 maybe that's what they're talking about. Overall, his sound and power are amazing on this difficult instrument.

  • If there was a mistake at 4:04 it was microscopic, inaudible.

  • Amazing! Awesome!

  • Fantastic guys!

  • Great video! only mistake was at 4:04

  • @ElevenBravo They accidentally hit the wrong button.

  • (((EXCEPTIONAL, BRAVO!!!))) Bet many of them are students of Ray Mase! Very very cool!

  • Question? Why would somebody bother to watch this and then click the "Dislike" button? What are they trying to say? They dislike trumpet ensembles? If so, then why even watch a video like this? *shakes head*

  • @ElevenBravo They are trolls, that's why.

  • Wow, this is incredible, absolutely magnificent. I would cut off my own leg to play like that... Either that or practice more :P and whoever the piccolo trumpeter was, you sir, have massive genitalia; that was balls out awesome.

  • Great precision

1:20 sounds like a string orchestra

  • Congrats guys, fantastic playing and group! Regards from Spain!

  • @coralkeyreserve nice video of you playing it better. oh wait

  • Comment removed

  • 11 people dont have ears

  • omg the accuracy.. some of their tones could be improved but my jaw dropped anyway

  • @chewcheepe i really think the tone has to deal with the quality of the video itself.

  • I played this in band and whenever I practiced alone I would play along with this arrangement so I could get it up to speed.

    Absolutely brilliant!!

  • i play the trumpet and this is truely amazing to hear..

  • i play the trumpet and this is truely amazing to hear..

  • My high school preformed the concert band arrangement of this piece. I have loved it ever since, and am now a big fan of Dmitri Shostakovich.

  • WHAT A FUCK? YOU PUT THE NAMES OF EVERYBODY WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE... DIMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH!!!

  • @honron21 who is he like a famous skateboarder or something?

  • @myshilohmy hahaha you are kidding right? Shostakovich is the greatest composer of the XX century

  • @honron21 hahaha i know i'm just messing with you

  • as a former competetive trumpet player, and a former member of a wind symphony that played Shostakovich's Festive Overture, I am completely blown away! Well done!

  • @meganelizabethwv That wind symphony wouldn't happen to be the 2009 California High School All State Wind Symphony, would it? Because THAT was a fantastic performance. I mean, not as impressive as this, but still great haha.

By the way... I currently have the privilege of playing with a trumpet player who I think can play piccolo trumpet as well as this guy. (I am a tuba player).

But have you seen Juilliard's 2010 video? Now THAT pic player is good... I've never heard better.

  • The 4 on the right were incredible....wasn't a fan of how the piece ended....but as a whole this is phenomenal!

  • @itsme5384 yeah I was hoping for an epic ending there, it just wasn't a good and the rest, which was FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC

  • @ikorolou you just have to listen to the original version of the piece! the ending is actually these few notes over a great drum roll... it actually IS an epic ending, but trumpets alone don't have that musch possibilities!

  • NOW that was preTTy darn sweeeT!!!

Reminds me of some good old High School times! :D

    *Yo,Bravo 4REAL!*

  • That was really good. :) Thanks for posting this.

  • That was extraordinary!!! The musicianship, showmanship, professionalism... truly impressive.

  • @coralkeyreserve

Why don't you play it then

I may not be a trumpet player but I know these guys are and u should shut the fuck up

  • Where's the "Tunnel of Doom" and the uniform change??

*drum corps fans'll get that one*

GREAT job by these guys...I never had that clarity on the valves on my best day...not even on only 2 valves!

  • i played first trumpet on this part for band but the clarinets got the crazy wicked part

  • I can't believe that's the level of intensity of the applause at the end. The audience should be on their feet, screaming their lungs out, and throwing 100 dollar bills as sacrifice to the trumpet Gods.

  • @flexicanhomie This was actually a competition, so those who were in the audience were their rival teams and the judges.

  • Amazing!

  • wow.. there's a reason why these people go to juilliard

  • anyone have sheet music

  • does anyone have the sheet music

  • I DIDNT KNOW THERE WAS A NATIONAL COMEPTION!

  • @ChildOfThursday Maybe you should try spelling competition right?

  • awesome. good!

  • Nice! Loved it.

  • awesome, well done!!

  • wonderful!

  • Not only is the video amazing, but so are the tags for the video...

  • Man I miss playing in my old high school band!!!

  • literally made me cry, shostakovich was my first big solo, but I did better ;)

  • gosh i wish i could play my trumpet like that!

  • I love this piece and enjoy the instrumentation and arrangement enormously. And now musicstands- that's right up my street!

  • kinda lukewarm applause, don't you think?

  • @dulkoski yeah seriously, maybe it's because of the discomfort they had after craping there pants from the performance.

  • That piccolo is just rocking it!! Major props to him!

  • piccolo trumpet affords a different style, I mean I would never play something baroque on a Bb even if it was "low" it's just a different sound, not necessarily having anything to do with ability or ease to play higher, it gives you that light effortless sound that you need for something like this, I know this isn't baroque that was just an example. But yeah this video makes me want to quite lol

  • I hope they won trumpet stands for everyone so they don't have to lay their instruments on the floor any longer ;)

    Sounds great!

  • What about this???
