This is another one of Rush's many hidden gems. Such a great song. And they rank up there with the greatest rock bands of all time. I've them 9 times in concert; loved every show and can't wait to see them again!
Rush's first album with any weak tracks. This is just average. Marathon and Manhattan Project are masterpieces. The Big Money is solid, Grand Designs and Emotion Detector are decent. I wouldn't give a bucket of spit for Mystic Rhythms or Territories, just bad. And this song, dead average. It was a sign of more mediocrity to come. Though it is better than that half-baked abortion Roll The Bones.
@karlmoles65 I really respect your opinion. A lot of hardcore fans will say about the band/artist they love, "I love ALL their songs!", like most Rush fans do. But I'm glad that you think some are bad, while some are amazing. That shows that you know a band.
@jerrythepotato1919 Thank You. Rush is currently ranked as my fifth favorite band of all time. But even the ones above them have weak tracks, almost all bands have weak tracks and occasional subpar albums, even Sabbath and Zep. Rush to me has several entire albums where every song is amazing, that's pretty rare too.
@jerrythepotato1919 I've been a Rush fan since I've been a Rock fan, 28 years. My first Rush show was on the Signals tour, I was quite young then, lol. When I see them I always sing along to every song. I love the musicianship and the lyrics often blow my mind.
@AiLiakCheez Rush live are the most faithful to their studio sound band I have ever heard. They are nearly perfect in concert, so no, no speeded up live renditions.
So many great songs on this CD. Like most Rush it's like wtf? When it's new, play it again, again, again, again, then somewhere in that 2nd week it's suddenly stuck in your head 4ever. Such a great song, and the drums starting at 2:00 is truly an exceptional area by Peart.
One of Rush better song and Power Windows is one of their best albums after Moving Pictures. As for the dislike, well I guess not everyone appreciate the better things in life or lack the ability to ! Rush as always been a band for people that get it. Obviously there are a lot of these ignorant people at the Rock N'Roll Hall of Fame since Rush has not yet been inducted.
@MrJonny333031 You obviously are an ignorant cunt yourself. Leave us rush fans alone. At least we know what magical and great music is. Go back to your your 50 cents and go blast your ears with frkn garbage. Have a nice day!
I wish they hadn't gone "back to their roots." Don't get me wrong, Presto and all the stuff after it is still great material, but no album by any band can touch Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows. The section starting at 2:00 in this song, for example. Amazing. Although this isn't my favorite song (The Enemy Within takes that title), that 35 second section of this song can still claim to be the only part of any song to make me grab for the "big headphones" for maximum volume and quality.
i just listened to song trying to see what it would like without alex. his sound is so vital to the band i don't see how he could feel like a backround to the synths
Ah, not enough room on YouTube, not enough room. But, looking back, I can see, the only thing trying to make things better for me was the people around me. I been to way too many funerals for someone my age. I'm also the last person left in the world with my surname, so, it dies with me.
But, people still dream in Middletown, so it's not the end of the world. Appreciate the people around you while you have the chance!
Giant trends at work here.Keep in mind though it's just Middletown. An idea that needs discussion. When I think about a hidden bottle,a loft painter,I feel very humbled by Peart's words. Urbane.
A Big thanks to you Matt.I can say Piddle or Mentaltown, but it's Middletown. We can talk this over at Klekolo World Coffee on Court my friend .The first Middletown.
I remember seeing them on this tour and Geddy introduced this song by prefacing: "...This is a song about dreams and the power of dreaming!" Indeed...
@TheTherese3 -but life's not unpleasant, in that little neighborhood...is that right? Wish I could find a Middletown to spend the rest of my days in...I dream OF Middletown, yes!
One of my favourite band's most creative moments. To me, 1980-1989 was Rush's most creative phase. Of course, it's all great, but take each album from this era in particular and listen attentively. Think about the time span between each album and the sonic direction of each one...brilliant!
Just before this album was released I was invited to a private listening session. It was played back over a really, really high end stereo with electrostatic speakers. To this day I have never heard anything as thrilling as that.
TOTAL EAR CANDY...never forget listening to this with a good set of headphones.and was superstoned...was almost too much.. lol Geddy sounds so sick at 4:17....Drives you when your down...gives me chills
This is one of those songs that us Rush fans really love. I mean, we all like Tom Sawyer, but this is one of those hidden gems that make this band so special. It's up-lifting to hear them on CD or radio or even now computer; and awesome to watch them play live at shows - they're so good. Long live Rush!
What I really love about Rush is that they truly sing about the human condition which is fundamentally greed and ignorance accompanied with a little understanding...depending on who you are...
@cardinaldriver Your statement is both fallacious in composition and attribution. The "human condition" is a ridiculous construct based on the idea of original sin (men are inherently bad.) Furthermore, you either do not understand (i.e., you are ignorant to) the fact that this song is not about ignorance or greed, but the desire to leave the clutches of a small town to explore the world and live.
First off sir/madam, I was not referring to this song, I was referring to Rush in General. Secondly, if I want to interpret "Middletown Dreams" as nocturnal emissions taking place by middle class teenagers everywhere, it is my right to do so. So, if there is nothing left to help you with please feel free to jump off of my cock at your earliest convenience.
I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with a nightmare "My life without RUSH" and then I see the RUSH poster on my wall and then everything is like a Bollywood movie, "Happy"

I´m in a really hard slump right now. I mean, my life is going nowhere, and it´s been like this for almost two years. I´ve just cried my eyes out listening to this, as it feels as if a true FRIEND is talking to me, reminding me of...I don´t know, better times, I think. "Hidden bottle"? No...I don´t hide it, anymore. To think that phrase didn´t ring a bell, 20 years ago...oh well, such is life. It´s understood...Help!
@nalgologo I moved across the country a year ago to adopt my drug addict sisters 3 kids and I already have a son of my own..Then I lost my job of 15 years and my mother in a two week span. I can't find work anywhere. You are not alone..I hope everything happens for a reason. If not I'm fucked. Being a single father of 4 is no joke but at least I have Rush and 4 smiling faces and A hope that things have to get better.....Don't ever give up !!!
@katy11235813 thank you, a month after I wrote this my little one had to get open heart surgery to replace a heart valve that was not growing. By far the lowest time in my life. But at the hospital I ran into an old friend and we started talking and through him I got a really great job and Mumbles who I call the little one has made a full recovery...So when it's good it's good but man when it gets bad...
@nalgologo I just read your comment. I had to write to you. I lost my fiance last year, she came in from work one night and said she was leaving,. 3and a half years gone. I was devastated. I left everything I owned and just left. Moved back home for 2 months to try and get my head together. Tried taking my own life as well. But somehow I stuck it out. I fought back. Now I have a new life a new job and things are brighter. Dont let go or give in.
This is my favorite track on this album. The others are effing fantastic too, but there's such mood in this song... and the story is captivating too. My favorite part is 2:00 - 2:34. The keyboards start firing that rhythmic melody to keep it chugging along and Geddy's got some sweet passing notes all through that section. You can almost hear his fingers dotting those 8th notes in there. I especially like the sound of his bass track on this album too.
Everybody wants to hate on their synth period, but from beginning to end, I love Power Windows. Songs like Middletown Dreams and Mystic Rhythms make this album really beautiful.
@Phoenix87x fuck their hatred. Their Synth period is amazing, Soaring guitar leads, amazing bass lines, impressive programming of sequencers, and Neil's Drumming and Lyrics. I think his writing matured a lot in this period, but then again its just my opinion :P
One of the things I love about Rush is that they never dumb down their music. They actually have respect for their listeners' intelligence, the words and music are both products of master songwriters and musicians.
I was working the other day, not in good spirits. This song came on on XM. It put a chill up my back. The rest of my day was great. I'm a drummer. Thank you Rush for being in our lives. Your music is so moving
Another day as drab as today, is more than a man can endure...Thank you RUSH!!! Ooooh, "the middle aged maddona, calls her neighbor on the phone, day by day the seasons pass.... and leave her life alone..." Soo good
Oooooooh! It's understood, by every single person who'd be elsewhere if they could..." Almost brings a tear to your eye
I don't understand all this crap about "going too far with synths". I am an avid 1970s Rush fan, and cared little for the 80, or 90s Rush. However, that is who Rush is: Always testing the boundaries. Actually, I like much of the melodic sounds, especially Lee's vocals. Also, that was the 80s---keyboards were a failed direction rock band went in (even van halen tried this). They went back to being a power trio in the late 80s. Just because I didn't like it, they were (and are) my favorite band.
@ruleta74835 I didn't really like 80's music that much either, but Rush was one of the few bands that survived the 80's. This song has a good vibe to it.
@killeroforce - I have in recent years become a big 80's junkie: Talking Heads, REM, Police, Wall of Voodoo, Pete Townshend (solo), for example. Somehow, back in the 80's, I would only listen to music from the 60's and 70's. I think Rush went through the 80's kind of awkwardly, but they let themselves evolve, which is part of their integrity.
@ruleta74835 Yeah, they have really done themselves well. They've never put out a bad album. That's entirely opinion though. Others would disagree with me. They're one of those bands that after 40 years of music, they are still keeping a good vibe.
This song is so Deep...it makes you feel so much emotion inside It makes you want to live your dreams but i think the point of this song is people are held back by things in life that they Love even though they're dreams are so meaningful to them not everyone can follow their dreams so they are still satisfied with the Simple things in life even though things might get boring at times not everyone can be in a dreamworld but its nice to Hold onto those passions and Dreams.
@JHallia Me too. The volume swells, along with Neil just slamming that snare drum, gives me chills everytime. So beautiful and powerful, it's driven me to tears a few times...
Thing is though Alex scapped all the guitar tracks[which sounded great although quite flat]and redone them later. The drums were recorded with NO yes NO overdubs on em. Thanks "Barney" .
@Dthorn912 Oh man, would that be my ultimate dream come true in paradise! Especially with the new keyboard controller I hear they're coming out with. Harmonix disgraces themselves by choosing to represent their one-band-specific sector by using Green Day as a flagship. By doing this, they've started to soil the good name of rock in the videogame community. Devoting a whole game to Rush, one of the finest and purest examples of a truly innovative rock band in history, would completely redeem them
@hardrockshell North American fans think its really cool that you South American fans dig them as well. We could feel the energy on the Rush in Rio dvd and well we think it was really cool you guys gave the boys a huge audiance to play to. Rock on in Brazil.
Say all you want about Moving Pictures, but I think Power Windows and Hold Your Fire is where Rush was at its best. Brings back a lot of memories of youth, cruising jammin rush when everyone else was listening to Poison and Guns and Roses lol
This is another one of Rush's many hidden gems. Such a great song. And they rank up there with the greatest rock bands of all time. I've them 9 times in concert; loved every show and can't wait to see them again!

I was lucky enough to be able to go back in time and cherish the past, and wait for the future with Rush.
If you add up all their songs it's incredible. A rare band.
Never, ever... count out their 80's. It's hard to argue they're Peart's best lyrics, and it's different from their usual.

Cmon. Who really can hate the Synths. Rush could rock with beer cans and old tampon wrappers and make it sound mint.

Justin Beiber came in and was the only one to vote thumb down!

Everybody wants to hate on their synth period, but from beginning to end, I love Power Windows. Songs like Middletown Dreams and Mystic Rhythms make this album really beautiful.
Phoenix87x 1 year ago
@Phoenix87x fuck their hatred. Their Synth period is amazing, Soaring guitar leads, amazing bass lines, impressive programming of sequencers, and Neil's Drumming and Lyrics. I think his writing matured a lot in this period, but then again its just my opinion :P

@turydragon Thank you gentlemen! I thought I was the only Rush fan left that actually appreciated their 80's music...

One of the things I love about Rush is that they never dumb down their music. They actually have respect for their listeners' intelligence, the words and music are both products of master songwriters and musicians.

The synths make rush songs sound natural! Without them the songs wouldn't be the same.

Markcip1 1 year ago 3
@Markcip1 I know. Every band and his mama had synths and keys in the 80's.

Channelling telepathically...."it follows dimensional windows"....Power Windows...
Det här är vad det handlar om.
This is what it´s all about.
Channelling! Abduction! Telephathy!
A R...the author...a former favourite of Neal Peart leds him in to different thinking and the FREE WILL SPIRIT...guides him...
It is not his own mind that makes the lyrics...it is channel information with a special purpose... Don´t you see....?

Man I hated this song and album in the 80's. It might not do what older Rush does for me, but this song is nifty.
ruleta74835 1 year ago
@ruleta74835 I didn't really like 80's music that much either, but Rush was one of the few bands that survived the 80's. This song has a good vibe to it.
killeroforce 1 year ago
@killeroforce - I have in recent years become a big 80's junkie: Talking Heads, REM, Police, Wall of Voodoo, Pete Townshend (solo), for example. Somehow, back in the 80's, I would only listen to music from the 60's and 70's. I think Rush went through the 80's kind of awkwardly, but they let themselves evolve, which is part of their integrity.
ruleta74835 1 year ago
@ruleta74835 Yeah, they have really done themselves well. They've never put out a bad album. That's entirely opinion though. Others would disagree with me. They're one of those bands that after 40 years of music, they are still keeping a good vibe.
killeroforce 1 year ago
In my opinion ... the best song of the band... the lyrics are great, the voice is incredible, the guitar is fantastic... Best band in the world !

Love the synth parts on this song. I really think after Rock Band 3 they should make Rock Band: Rush.
Dthorn912 1 year ago 14
@Dthorn912 Oh man, would that be my ultimate dream come true in paradise! Especially with the new keyboard controller I hear they're coming out with. Harmonix disgraces themselves by choosing to represent their one-band-specific sector by using Green Day as a flagship. By doing this, they've started to soil the good name of rock in the videogame community. Devoting a whole game to Rush, one of the finest and purest examples of a truly innovative rock band in history, would completely redeem them
