I don't think the message is as much about the actual cutting of your clothes as the way that you go about getting to a healthy weight. Keeping jeans that are too small for you and having them constantly remind you that you used to be that size is just another way of beating yourself up and calling yourself fat, which is unhealthy. There are plenty of great ways to get in shape that don't involve making yourself feel bad.
