Dilla was all about placing his hits behind or in front of the beat especially later in his career i think is when he started experimenting with it
it creates a wonderful tension in songs
but yeah, you could call it like "between" swing and straight or w/e, but that's not the way chris daddy is thinkin about it, for him its in terms of "behind" or "in front of" the beat. And he's a master of that.
@drumsandivory its exacly like that. . some would also refer to it as a triplet shuffle within 8ths. . . its reaaaaaaaal odd to explain. just gotta be felt. . and boy does chris feel it . makes me feel dilla more.

What do you mean... it's a simple 4/4... but let's call it Dilla time signature... inspired by samplers and record players like 8:12
