"There is no such thing as "part-Cherokee". Either you are Cherokee or you are not. It is not the quantity of Cherokee blood in your veins that is important, but the quality of blood, it is your pride in it . I have seen full-bloods who have virtually no idea of the great legacy entrusted to their care, Yet I have seen people with as little as 1/500th blood quantum who inspire the spirits of their ancestors, because they make being Tsalagi a proud part of their life."
I love Cherokee, NC. I've been there several times and plan to go back this week! i recommend everyone go there atleast once in there life. Go tour the village, see the outdoor drama and eat an indian taco @ Paul's on Tsali blvd! The season for the village is almost over so get over there today or you'll ahve to wait till spring!
Who is the man at 1:44? He was nice enough to let me take a pic of him with my son on our visit about 3 years ago. I'd love to have his name to go with the pic.
Well done video...well sort of. You show Haida Gwaii first nations peoples dancing that aren't Cherokee. It makes me question the heritage of other first nations peoples you show. Many are NOT CHEROKEE...that's for sure.
This video features clips from both Cherokee attractions and events. Many events, such as the Festival of Native Peoples and the Southeastern Tribes Celebration, feature many other tribal nations from across the country.
The music in the video is featured in the "Unto These Hills" Outdoor Drama performance.
@tydees the thing about that place is thoughit is prodominently cherokkee they also feature other tribes there from the the region for example they have a thing called the festival of native peoples and thse southeastern tribe celebration. whisch is prob were that footage came from.
I've been going to Cherokee for about 10 years now, since I moved relatively close to the area. It's good to see the pride coming back. It's even better to see that damnable motel & sign finally get done away with there downtown. If you're from Cherokee, I'm sure you know which one I'm talking about. Now I just read they are enforcing a sign ordinance. That's outstanding news, especially if they require them to be washed of the stereotypes. They're good people.
Unto The Hills is the most wonderful thing I've ever witnessed. I can't wait to go back! The people in the village are so kind and willing to answer any questions you may have
Truly the BEST part of North Carolina in my opinion ;)
Its hard to imagine chubby warriors dominating the other Indian nations back then. They were always at war with someone like the Chickasaw and the Creek.
I am also an enrolled member here on the Qualla Boundary....And I agree, we were no "chubby". The other cherokee that claims that we were needs to look at the old photos of our stickball players....all of them are very slim toned. Before Comods....
"Commodities"....Comods is slang for the food that the US government used to give give in poverty areas. This was prevalent during the Welfare days....no jobs, very little income on most reservations. They would give this food out. Which was full of starch and sugar...one of the reasons for the unhealthy eating habits today. Our parents and grandparents depended on this food to feed their families...This also was the start of the diabeties epidemic that still affect Native People today.
@rustyeels dude no we weren't. sure there are some chubby people live with every group of people. but the weight issue and diabetes issue both came about when we depended on goverment support.
I remember so much of this.I used to go there every year when I was really little until I was 10 and somethings happen and could'nt go anymore. Its beautiful there.
I'm an Asian woman. I love to know more about Cherokee culture cause it's so amazing and great. I admire the people and culture!!
