they are scary and make loud buzzing noises.. i think one was pollinating the cactus outside my house and it was just scary and i was hoping it didnt land on me
These things scare the shit out of me when they fly by my head and i hear a loud buzzing noise. I also hate when they just literally hover in the air like a helicopter, it looks so creepy... they're watching me, I know it.
@MrTNL3 I can guarantee that it's a carpenter bee it had a shiny abdomen. I have hundreds of them in my backyard in spring and fall. If you do an internet search for a close-up picture you'll see that carpenter bees have hairs on the end of their abdomen.
Yes, only the female has a stinger...it's the males that buzz around and dive bomb your head.
However, carpenter bees are a problem as they destroy decks, fences, and even structural beams in your home. There is a place for them in this world. Just not at my house. For that matter you know wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets pollinate as well but I'm sure you wouldn't hesitate spraying a nest of them if they were near your home.

That's not a stinger! It's called a penis (and it's very VERY sharp).

ONLY the female has a stinger. W/o bees we would not have many flowers/fruits/vegetables! They pollinate.
