@RealRapMusic101 55 - 60 gallon tank for now but you'll have to trade in the ID Sharks and Bala Sharks after a number of years or get an even bigger tank because they get massive. You'll have to make one of those choices at some point. You are not supposed to have two Rainbow Sharks in the same tank. One will attack the weaker one constantly until death or starvation. That's a big no-no. Take one back. That goes for Red Tail Sharks and Black Sharks as well.
@RealRapMusic101 you will need about 250gal for balas and rainbow shark and about another 500gal tank for the irridescent sharks and columbian shark which need to be brackish water eventually moving onto full salt water.
@BobtheSnailTM Bigger. I've seen 18 inches. Red Tail Sharks get bigger too. Websites, books, and many people say 6 inch is max but they can get 8 inches. I've seen several 8 inch Red Tails.
@CosmicGate21 I would think that 20 gallons would be okay for the first year as long as its not an octogonal tank. They tank needs to be rectangular with enough room for the bala shark to swim. After about a year the bala shark should have a bigger tank. I would suggest a 100 gallon otherwise if he or she gets spooked they could slam into the side of the tank. This could kill them or cause permanent damage. I was pushing it with a 50 gallon.
@HYNKZL you can put them in a 20 gallon long tank. it is the length of a 30 gallon just shorter. i have had my 3 balas in a 20 long for 6 years and they are doing awesome.
@romisa420 Balls sharks are not sharks. They are from the minnow family. They only have the shape of a shark.
They were pretty fine at this size when I put them in this tank. No fear now. I am leaving Japan and have given them to the tropical aquarium shop in Towada, Aomori, Japan.
If I would have stayed longer a bigger tank they would have gotten. They need more than a 100 gallon tank. That one you see them in is a 50.
I will be giving them away soon. My time in Japan is almost up. I will be moving to san diego in the spring. Therefore it's not economical to buy a bigger tank at this time.
hey man, can i just say i think that tank is a little too small for the balas, they're naturally a schooling fish and would probably prefer a bit more room, plus they look wicked when they have some more length to get a good speed going :P
hmm...realize that when your red tail gets older he will be chasing the heck out of the bala shark. Mine is doing it alot to the three that I have now. That will be the biggest reason I get a bigger tank. I like the red tail and all the bala sharks. I think your bala sharks will need a longer tank. My tank is like between 3 to 4 feet long.
every fish needs weekly water changes and yes they love tubifex i feed mine tubifex all the time, they actually choose that over flakes. And i dont think you'll see a significant difference in 2 months the ones in the video are deffinitly over a year
yes even though the tank you see in this current video is a 50 gallon i think it is small for the bala sharks. I recommend a 100 gallon tank. bala sharks can between 12 and 14 inches. plus the tank should be long not high. add a pump in the tank to make a current. bala sharks love to swim in the current much like a hamster in a wheel.
i have a 4 inch bala in my 29 gal. i have 5 guppy fry 4 guppies a pleco 2 albino cory cats black skirt tetra and a chinese agae eater. i give them blood worms and flakes.. sometimes brine shrimp all frozen. Is that fine?
that's fine. your bala shark should love blood worms. i will give my 3 bala sharks 5 cubes of blood worms, 2 algae pellets, and flakes. This food is shared with the other fish in the tank. The bala sharks eat most of it though. For there size they have to eat alot. Check out my Bala shark #4 video to see how them now.
I am not sure what a bala shark egg looks like. I don't think my tank is big enough to support breeding. Plus it is said that they don't breed that well in a home aquarium. I do know that they lay their eggs on the bottom of a big enough tank.
right now, i have 55 gallon talk with three new bala's, two rainbow, three gouramis, three silver dollars, one guppy, four mollies, two plecos, and a few others..
am i safe?? i'm feeding them a mixture of goldfish flakes for color and normal tropical flakes. sometimes i give them a pinch of bloodworms.
well if this is any indicator for you i am thinking of buying something larger for my 3 bala sharks. they are getting big for my 50 gallon tank. plus the red tail shark loves to chase everything in my tank so the bala sharks need more room to stay away from him.
your tank is probably a little overcrowded but as long as you overfilter you should be fine for awhile. Lots of filtration, water changes and good tankmates= a healthy tank.
Honestly I don't know if your zebra dinos will be eaten by the balas. I do know that anything that is small enough will be eaten by balas as long as they can fit in the balas mouth. Bala sharks will eat neon tetras when they get large enough.
hey how long do u think it will take for my bala sharks to grow to at least 5-6 inches? they r about 11-15cm, i feed them flakes and worms....btw awesome tank!
What size is your tank? It looks a lot like mine, same amount of fish and same types as well, and I have a 20 gallon. Do they all get along, cause my rainbow shark is aggressive with the bala's.
My tank is a just under a 50 gallon tank. I pulled a few of the decorations out of my tank and changed the tank. I am going to post a new video soon once i figure out how to change an MOV file to either MPG or AVI
That was a perfect shot. I have three bala sharks now. I put a long bubble stone at one end to try and make a current. Sometime I have all three next to each other just gliding in the soft current. I think that shot would be cool as well. I have to place another video soon.
yea i just got my bala yesterday and i never see them eat yet they survived through da night maybe they eat when im not looking? and if u can please post a vid of ur bala eating something i wanna see how it does
hey can u help me today i bought 6 pangasius sutchi/paroon shark/id shark/iredescent shark w/e u call em and i also bought 3 bala sharks and i put them in da same 75 gallon tank i wanna ask u something i no tht da pangasius is hella lively and stuff but i thought da bala was too cuz when i fed da tropical flakes da pangasius was goin crazy and da bala like dosent eat anything can u tell me if thts a problem? cuz im afraid it might die cuz its not eating and btw the shark and da pangasius are 3in
Did you just add them into the new tank? My bala sharks eat anything. Get them some blood worms and see if that stimulates there appetite. Mine love blood worms and will eat them over anything else. I will put a whole cube in and once it thaws the bigger bala will gulp the while thing down in like a couple of bites. Your bala sharks might be stressed by there new home, tank water quality, or temperature. Wish I could check tham out.
The one swimming around the tank was fighting with the one stuck in the corner. The one in the corner is scared and trying to hide behind the thermometer. Soon after i took that video I gave the fighter away. I used to have 3 red tails and the fighter killed the one you don't see. From what I have read red tails are very territorial and need at least one and a half feet between each other.
Now my passive red tail has grown a pair and is on the prowl. Once the light goes out he chases everything around the tank. Quite cool actually. He doesn't hurt anything. He just chases.
Took about a year to get the silver sharks that big. Minimum they need a 50 gallon tank. I am pushing it right now with 3 silver sharks. A couple of months ago I bought another. I went to the pet shop and a lone silver shark was by himself in a tank. Had to rescue him because if he was bought like that he would live a boring life.
wow huge silver sharks i just got two and they ate all my life plants rofl my clown loaches are about that size trying to see if the sharks will get the same
You wouldn't believe how many plants I went through. I have read that plants are part of silver sharks diet. They eat anything. Those plants in that video...gone. I bought different ones that so far they havn't eaten.
Personally as long as the red-tailed shark is by himself in that 20 gallon tank without much in decor he might be ok. My current redtailed shark is only 5 to 6 inches and I have had him for just over a year and a half. Sorry for taking so long to reply.
the two bala sharks will get along with the red tailed shark. the red tailed shark will chase the bala sharks every now and then but they will be okay. I am not too sure about the rainbow shark. I have read that rainbow sharks won't get along with the other fresh water sharks. I have no personal experience with them.
if i put diferent sharks together what will happen becouse i had like 6 fish and 1 bala shark and the bala shark woudent move and in like 2 days it died (and how many times do i feed him every day and do i have to feed him flaks or worms)
bala sharks are not happy unless they are in a group. they are schooling fish and nead to swim together.
I usually get more than one of the same type of fish when I buy them. Later I might change my mind based on what I have read or experienced. Like my red tailed sharks. I bought three. They all fought each other. One died and the most aggressive one was going to kill the second. I gave the aggressive one away. The last shark is doing great by itself.
Took a year to get to the size you see in the video. I feed them a mixture of everything. Blood worms, flakes, algae pellets, etc... These fish do not discriminate about anything they eat. As long as it fits in their mouth they are game. Once you feed them they keep eating whatever is on the bottom. One time the big one ate so much that he couldn't move. I had to cut back on feeding then. The smaller one was happy because the bigger one wouldn't chase him anymore to hog the food.
i had 2 bala sharks for over 18 months and they hardly grew at all. fed them twice a day on bloodworms and flakes. they were in a 40 gallon tank. died from whitespot that was the result of no power for 4 days in winter.
poor bala sharks. I don't know why they didn't grow. mine are growin. I just bought a new one and he is growing like crazy now.
the only problem i have is the bigger one hogs the food. i change when i feed my fish. sometimes twice a day, once a day, or i wait a day or two. was told by and aquarium shop owner and a friend that its better for a fishes digestive tract if you wait a day or two every once in a while.
be careful with the redtails. i have read that they need 3 feet between them. they are aggressive and very territorial towards one another. hehe i had one that killed another. i got rid of him before he killed the last one. I just gave hime to a new home.
To tell you the truth I don't know. I bought the tank here in Japan.
Thanks for the comment on the balas. They are beautiful. Too bad I will have to give them away in a year and a half when I transfer to another duty station.
Yes they do fight. To the point where I gave the aggressive one away. The other one gets chased around shortly by the larger bala.
Before I gave the aggressive red tailed shark away he would chase the larger bala yes but it was a mutual thing. I gave him away because I didn't want him killing the more passive red tailed.
I recommend only one redtailed per tank from my experience.
The bigger one has to be about 9 to 10 inches long. I have read online that they are supposed to get up to 12 to 14 inches long. Some websites say a minumum of 50 gallons whereas others say 100. I have two years left here in Japan so that is why I chose the 50. By then I can give the Balas away.
If you notice on the second bala his nose has a gash on it. That's half the reason I got the bigger tank. He kept hitting things when he ran from the bigger bala. His nose is healing up now.
how big are your balashow much bigger do u expect them to get there suppose to get pretty big iam going to be setting up a 55gal and planned on getting some balas as well

Your aquarium is not suited to keep bala-sharks (bala-shark is a schoolfish, by the way), because it's way too small.

Mostly it depends on the fish.

how many years did it take to get them that big what did u feed them
hyespeedz 3 years ago

HYNKZL 3 years ago
they're doing great! i have 2, i think im going to get 3 more since they are school fish. im also going to get 2 red tail sharks and 3 clown loaches
StangGirl4 3 years ago
be careful with the redtails. i have read that they need 3 feet between them. they are aggressive and very territorial towards one another. hehe i had one that killed another. i got rid of him before he killed the last one. I just gave hime to a new home.

Nice Bala Shark I have the same problem with the Bala Shark chasing the Red Tailed Black Shark! Have a look on LFCWALSH22.
LFCWalsh22 3 years ago
Just wait til your bala gets bigger. He will turn the tide and chase the red tailed. Your red tail won't mess with him after that.

Is that 50 gallons (US) or 50 gals (UK)? Nice Balas.
I am considering sdome for an 240/190 gal aquarium. Beautiful fish. :)

To tell you the truth I don't know. I bought the tank here in Japan.
Thanks for the comment on the balas. They are beautiful. Too bad I will have to give them away in a year and a half when I transfer to another duty station.

do ur red tailed sharks fight and do they ever attack or harass ur two bala sharks
SCOTTISHtiliDie92 3 years ago
