  • His voice may not have aged well, but at its best it was like an embrace.

  • Beautiful. Ian is a quirky lad, but he could write a good ballad with the best of them. *quack*

  • My God, what a voice he had!

  • the best line of all is at the end when he says,so there. classic!

  • The Shakespear of music. I think Ian is probably like the members of Rush. They dont worry about the Hall of Fame. They created a sound all their own and folks enjoyed it.

  • @maxquad21 gee, you think?;)

  • ...from my favorite Tull Album....this is too good to describe....just turn it up! His mom wanted him to learn to play the flute....he wanted to be a rock n roller !....thanks mom!

  • jaja son todos tuyos estos videos!!! jaja... ojala algun dia los tradujeras asi les llega a todos :)

  • @Faculas1989 metete el dedo.

  • @renoraider2 metetelo vos

  • I love this song!!!!

  • I read a comment once saying that Ian Andersons music writng style was too complex. Its the complex that makes it great. Especially if your a self- taught muscian--not bad. Tull Definitely sounded like no one else, before or since.

  • "isn't it just too damn real - one white duck on your wall" -- I don't get it; can anyone interpret? What does the white duck represent? The unavoidable bloodthirstiness implicit in shooting wild birds from the sky in order to subsist, the fact that cruelty is a part of Nature, that the beauty of the Universe is also ruthless? Or that Anderson himself feels like a bird knocked from the sky, fallen from his personal paradise? That he feels alone even with his trophy woman? Help!

  • @SupernalOne A traditional wall ornament in northern England is/was a set of three porcelain flying ducks, each smaller than the last. They tend to signify a well-established, settled household. If only one remains, "one white duck on your wall", the suggestion is that the household or marriage is has broken up; hence this song. Whether the white duck is the only duck left, or the pale outline where a duck has been removed from the wall, is something to consider.

  • @stratman123

Thanks - interesting, would never have guessed.

  • @SupernalOne I think Anderson was going thru divorce around the time of that album, if I remember correctly. It seems that much of the album reflected introspectively what he was going thru at the time.

By the way--once you make the effort to look--you can spot 3 ducks on the wall in many movies, paintings, etc..

  • brilliant as all. xxxxx love them. jethro tull. i would love to have met ian . me and he same age. getting old now.

  • @PinkPurplexity. And in reality butterflies live a short and precarious existence, hardly care free frivolity. A Larks struggle for survival is also no picnic.I know there must be something wrong with me and my brain, i just thought it needed to be said.

  • Listening to this track makes me feel like a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis, fluttering in the sheer beauty and purity of the music. As it progresses I feel like a Lark flying higher and higher into the sky, my soul and spirit are filled with an all consuming joy. Nothing an no one else exists, my mind is taken to a higher conciousness. The musical genius of Ian Anderson and the other members of Jethro Tull is a wondrous gift to us all.

  • I love the melancholy feel of the first half of this track. Captures a certain mood like no other song I've heard. I still can't decide which half I prefer, I usually leave it at saying they complement each other perfectly. First half is somber, second half is an injection of humor to lighten things up. Can't beat the lyrics in the second half though, they are Ian at his humorous best.

  • Tull has SO many ~ This Duck Thing ~ is way up there near the top ~ UN believable what they could do with Rhythms, Pace, any collector must have this one "on their wall".....

  • A very underrated track! I love the pizziccato strings, like little duckling feet prancing across an ancient hardwood floor of a Scottish cabin on the shore of a loch.

  • This is my favorite jethro tull song of all time!

  • Along with Skating Away, my other favorite Tull song of all time. The lyrics hit home with me and the guitar is beautiful!

  • Anderson's voice was in top flight during the MITG sessions. Plus, he is THE finest accoustic guitar player my ears have ever known.

  • one person sucks!

  • Yet another musical masterpiece .....the interplay of Ian and Martin is magnificent.

  • @TheNigelr

It's only Anderson. The guitar as well.

  • Yet another musical masterpiece .....

  • Yowswers!!! This group is just SO good when it comes down to basics. WHY are they not as famous as say CCR or ELP? It is an insane mystery and a travesty. BUT, i am becoming more familiar with them now, to my great edification!!

  • This is my all time favourite song of all songs ever. I have temporarily lost access to my music so i'm on you tube. Whilst I am here... How could I not comment?

To me this is MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE SONG and has been for at least 5 years.

  • Could you please include date of recording and release in your amazing videos, along with more lyrics? Thanks!

  • Chasing Contentment.

  • (0)^10 = nothing at all...

  • What is the point of comparing one band to another...what a waste of time. It;s as big a waste of time as arguing about it on youtube. What?....oh...doh ! ;)

  • Being a teenager I've recently discovered the less obvious works of Tull such as this album... each one is unique in its own way. I found this album last week, and it's brilliant!

  • i listen to this album everyday in the car to work...this broadsword and warchild, this and warchild are my fav albums and the folk trio (sftw, hh, and stormwatch)

  • I was thinking....this is Celtic and strong that way...and then I thought that any unbroken person or culture is psychedelic ....like Anderson....what is the alternative?...

  • emotion sincerely distilled

  • *.* I loove it (L) Playing it n guitar is the best X3 I love this part!! 0:38

  • *.* I loove it (L) Playing it n guitar is the best X3

  • Surreal and heartbreaking all at the same time. A true gem!

  • Beautiful. But I'm not sure what the lyrics mean.. Anyone got an idea?

  • @Svulla Apparently, Ian Anderson was going through a divorce from his first wife Jennie at the time (she helped him write the words to 'Aqualung'), and 'One White Duck' refers to the opposite of 'having your ducks all in a row' - a reference to the idea that his life seemed to be out of sorts at the time.

  • @craignl Thank you so much. Now I can enjoy this song more

  • something must be wrong with me and my brain... and my zero to your power of 10 equals nothing at all... wow... good stuff

  • your way in is

    my way out

  • Doesn't get any better then this !!

  • Brilliant! That's my "Foreskin Conclusion"...

  • His Dreams Are for Dreaming, and Best Left That Way

  • "up to my deaf ears in cold breakfast food trays" wow this one must've been written in a hotel room , I guess, "lunch confusion" it sounds like it came right out off the top of the mind. Great!

  • Fly away Peter and Fly Away Paul!

  • English genius !

  • Why does this always make me think of J G Ballards "Concrete Island" ?

  • In my opinion, this song is a bittersweet reminder that image is more important than talent from a societal standpoint.

  • An overlooked and underrated Tull album. Got stoned to the "B" side many, many times back in the day.

  • @RevDrWally

Rest asured, you were not the only one! We all shared a Baker St muse.

    () 10

  • @RevDrWally Been there

  • @ghost1walker they came in Italy, where I live, one week ago! The concerts were 4 or 5 and they were too far for me... And nobody could take me to see them ç_ç i'm only 16 and i can't move alone :(... My dad is so impatient to take me to see a jethro concert!

  • This song is one of the most beautiful for me <3 i love it... in the future, i wish i can see Jethro Tull live!

  • @makeasmile94 i truly wish that you'll be able to see them.it's not just a good concert, it an amazing expirience

  • This is one of the finest Tull albums of them all ... Even though my favorite usually consists of the one I happen to be listening to at the time. So many classics. So much talent. So much Tull...

  • the circumcised cannot jump to foreskinned conclusions

  • I love how his voice falls down on 1:00 ...

  • I F*CKING LOVE IT.

  • thanks I've seen tull about 30 time first in 68 at the newport jazz when they were on the same bill as roland kirk they came out an did THIS WAS an took the place by storm ian always said things change don't they no other band can play this most complex music just listen to the cord changes no one comes close and the word the man is a poet

  • this is best of the best no druming machines just music pure an simple the words alone are special but the music complex an beautiful the man can write don't u think, an they let B.S. in the hall of fame I don't get it an never will

  • @Mr10350 Mr. Anderson and crew are way too good for the stupid hall of fame.

  • @hyperguy61 Quite right!

  • Acoustic Tull !!!!

  • It can't get much better than this.

  • @The5mike5 your right, but the beatles beat this

  • @gsokol7 im incined to disagree, acoustic tull wraps me up in emotion more than the beatles, more poetic lyrics and complex orchestrations

  • @gsokol7

i ll call it a tie.

  • @tcoudi sure thing

  • and my zero to your power of ten equals nothing at all!! That's one of my fav. lines of any jethro tull song!

  • Fly away Peter, Fly away!

  • A foul song, but I like it a lot.

  • What a poultry thing to say.

  • What a poultry thing to say.

  • @manlyduckling You quack me up!

  • the second part (2:20) is called "Nothing At All".

    what a great song arrangement.

I love the tull ballads, thanks for this.

  • drink wine slip on the head phones.....and fkn fall asleep..truly a luv tull.

  • IA has the most perfect acoustic guitar sound. Better than Pete Townsend. This guy knew how he wanted things to sound.

  • Magnificent!

But what's the duck doing on the wall?

  • Quacks? rofl xD

  • The most beautiful and honest song ever.

  • how many whites ducks? And what color are they?

  • One...white...just one white duck

Why it's on your wall, is another matter. Is it perched ON TOP of your wall, or just smacked against it in mid flight, and slipping to the floor slowly?...WHACK....squueeeek....*thud*

Only Ian Anderson will ever know.

  • Merci Aqualung1989 pour toute ces superbes chansons de Jethro Tull!

  • de rien =)

  • so good.....

  • I love the solace & solitude of this album.

    ...Especially this side.

(yes, I'm referring to vinyl,...This music goes way back with me.)

  • God God, I haven't heard this in so many years.

I've always loved how the song decomposes from a lush ballad to Ian and his lone guitar. So perfect.

Definately the highlight of Mistrel In The Gallery.

  • Personally, this is my favorite song off of Minstrel In The Gallery.

  • the first tull album i ever bought. still hearing earlier stuff for the first time and some real gems out there. brilliant band

  • this is great songgg... one off theyr best....

  • One White Duck / 010 = Nothing At All

  • Comment removed

  • that's the whole song title.

  • Oh I had no idea wha you were saying. I feel retarded. I'm not a huge Tull fan so I didn't really know this song that well. I mean I love their music and I think Ian is a genius, I've just never gotten that into them. I feel really stupid now haha

  • it's cool dude! why not start being a huge Tull fan now :D

  • Well I'm just not as in to the whole progressive rock scene as used to be. And you can't really start becoming a huge fan, it just has to happen, but I'll be checking them out a lot more lately XD

  • my youth ..............

  • I love the whole album, but this is really the best song...

I like the melody, it makes me happy.

I was born in 1991, so not the year of Jethro Tull, but I have a dad with a good taste for music like this...

  • Thanks Aqualung1989!!!!

  • There are no words to describe how beautiful this song is.

  • @55802 Right You Are

  • I'll catch a ride on Your violin...strung up Your bow

and I'll float on Your melody - sing Your chorus soft and low

    Salud
