It's not a stereotype. It's common courtesy to learn the basics of the language of a foreign country if you are vacationing there. In actuality, if you TRY to talk to them in French, show an effort, they will talk to you in english, especially so if you tell them you can't speak their language well. It's the same as the United States being expected to know Spanish or French or German.

Kate Ryan's real name is Katrien Verbeeck, and she's a Flemish girl. Unlike most Francohones in this country we speak more than one language, and a lot of Flemish artists sing in English, French, Spanish, etc.

So no, her native language is NOT French. Just google it if you don't believe me (not that it matters)

I was referring to the fact you specify Flemish Dutch, I know she's Flemish and therefore her native tongue would be Dutch, and actually I must correct myself on one point, while Flemish is a dialect of Dutch, Walloon is not a dialect of French but rather they are similar languages and neither is a derivative of the other so she would however. Europe needs to stop mixing language so much :P

@dunzerkug Flemish/Vlaams is not a dialect *of* Dutch/Nederlands, it's one of the many regional dialects of the Low Countries that are one of its ancestors. The Dutch language doesn't only come from the country of the NLs, but from the region called the Low Countries (De Nederlanden (a region), as opposed to just Nederland (a country)). The dialects came before the standard language, not after. Although it is true that unofficialy we do say Flemish to our Dutch & Hollands to that of the north.

I'm not trying to bore you to death or anything :) but it's about time that people stopped thinking that we Flemish speak some kind of offspring of the Dutch language, while in reality Flemish is, together with Brabants and Hollands, one of the 3 main forefathers of modern Dutch ;) And not every Flemish province speaks the Flemish dialect, only the coastal ones do, less than half.
