So you wouldn't get emotional if you'd dedicated your life to a sport, trained hard for months and made countless sacrafices all for your chances of winning (or even doing respectably) to be snatched away from you by something completely out of your control?
thats why you use armadillo tires. they are a bit heavier but vurtually indestrcutible to flats. so they weigh a few grams more. take a big crap before the race and drop a pound. why risk it on tires...omg
normann is the frikken MAN! he is a two time champ at kona. If a 5k cusom built bike gave me two flats on race day i think id pitch it off a cliff! Also keep in mind this is how he pays his bills and supports his family. Normann is a true champion.
and that flat could have cost him $100k, no matter what, my hat goes off to any ironman, pro or not, it takes way more than just balls to get it done.... and the emotional part is just as hard as the physical endurance...
well in this case you should know what we as ironman go through on the day and i dont understand how you make shitty comments like you did about the the material that Norman uses.... as pro's minutes even seconds makes a huge difference between first and second place in some races and even to be crowned the best in the world.... i would have thought as a ironman you would be able to understand what Norman went through on the day .... hope you do well on your next Ironman.
Hmmm, if you're using the "DefCon" analogy then you're going the wrong way. DefCon (Defense Condition) 1 is the highest level of alert, DefCon 5 is the lowest... That's a really nerdy, boring comment, isn't it? :)
So your saying why dont they have a spare wheel folowing every pro athlete??? I m not sure if you realise but its one lap in hawai so the need to cover 90km of road with bike support. You carry one single.. maybe two... just unlucky.... but its the worst day to have bad luck! I had no probs in 6 months of lead up to IM aus and on the day my chain snapped!!!!! Unlucky!
I think people give Stadler too much crud for this incident. If you spent your entire life preparing for these events and indeed, your livelihood depended on your performance, you might not react so cheerily to such bad luck either.

I HAVE A FAT TYE-YAH!! Stadler is a prima donna cry baby. Nice job throwing your $8000 custom made (no doubt free to you) Kuota around. Why did he DNF in O7'? Because he got dropped like a little bitch by Macca at the beginning of the bike. Any age grouper would have had to been dragged off that course in Kona..."stomach bug" or not. You want to see a real Ironman, then Google Joe Bonness.
I'm not familiar with Ironman, but why don't the top athletes have a car trailing behind with a replacement bike in the case of a flat or other mechanical difficulties? Riding solo seems like a lot to lay on the line, considering the enormous amounts of time spent training for this one event.
From the start of the triathlon, you're on your own until the finish. No extra bikes or help allowed. That's why it's such a big deal to complete it, you are on your own for 140.6 miles.
he should bring a spare tube, it doesnt weigh much

Shit, if I were a sponsored athlete I would ride the rims- esp. b/c that course is so flat.

@Technopunkster I have armadillo's too, but I think they suck. Not because they're heavy, but because i've gotten a ton of flats on them.

Do they get support, or tubes?
grayy 2 years ago
yep. I'm an ironman myself. But anyone riding crap material has to handle his problems.
No way out and not sorry for that.
If you use tires that are light but unstable that's your choice. It will make you faster but it increases the risk of flats.
Stadler somehow is like Alberto Tomba used to be: Either win our fail; nothing inbetween.

just wondering NoTVAndAtHomeAlone how many Ironman compititions have you completed...... just a thought from my side
ironbud007 2 years ago
I've finished two races. And I'm really looking forward to my next race; hope I'll again enjoy every minute of it.
In fact, in the second race I have even won against Normann, because he (once again) did not finish.
Sure, if he finishes, he's a few hours faster than I will ever be. Therefore, he's a pro.
As I am comparatively heavy (almost 100kg, no wonder with 2,01m height), I really have to care about stable material instead of leightweight stuff.

This is the hardest which can happen to you!
You trained month and month, for years and years and than a fu..in' flat tyre ruins everything.
He will take the win this year. It will be brutal, but he will do it!!!
