Yuiyean: Being Asian doesn't mean you're an expert on gamelan (gamelan itself is not a dance). Many Asian people have little knowledge of their own traditional arts. My Music of South Asia professor was Caucasian, but she knew more about that than anyone in my family (from India) ever knew.
Art shouldn't be limited to the group that originated it. I bet you wouldn't be laughing at the many Asians who perform Western music and dance. Some are professionals, but others are not.

I might have laughed my head off being an Asian and not used to seeing whites dancing Gamelan. The first dancer was better. Thanks for the effort at least.
Music, however expressed, is still just that . . . an expression . . . so should it matter if it's perfect or done by the regulars? If that were true, then no one would ever play anything . . .

it's disgusting to see how the white man (who has been controlling this world relentlessly for over five centuries)should show interest in something like tari teruna jaya. i just find that ironic.

I know people are giving you the thumbs down, but i do see the irony. Westerners do seem to have a tendancy for sucking the soul out of art forms, most evident in the difference between japanese horror films and american horror films, Know what i mean? but at least theyre trying, they dont do too bad a job, although its not as tight as true balinese gamalans.
@TimTimmenycharoo Well if that's not a pretentious comment, then I don't know what is...Not to mention you can argue that any group of people with their own culture can suck the soul out of art forms of other cultures. Also while I do agree with you about the Japanese horror films ( the American remakes are pretty bad), you can't really use that in the same context as this, and even if it was, aren't you forgetting many great horror films made in the west throughout the century?
racism is really cool, please drag it into art more often. though i do prefer to hear it done by people who were raised on it rather than people with an interest in it, at least they're learning about such a beautiful art form that exists in a country that most americans wouldn't even know existed.

Instead of taking a likeness to this beautiful form of art, why don't you Aryans provide reparation for your three centuries of robbing Nusantara of its resources.
Oh, yeah - Menyali! Doesn't that bring back memories? I was once a member of Gamelan Sekar Jaya, and we played a friendly mabarung with the local sekaha gong in the summer of 2000. The unusual thing about it was that we were playing angklung. And there was that intriguing "penampahan" piece - one performed when pigs were being slaughtered before ceremonial feasts.
