Well.... I love it all, i'm taking a bath in all those early electronic/pop/new wave/romantic/synth music and i love it!! The only bad thing is that there's not much of us likeing this kind of world, pitty.

Krawtwerk were probably the first electronic pop band.
1980s was the worst decade in the history - people wore black bin bags and though they looked cool! I lived in Sheffield too - it was a great place despite the music.
tjmassey-the 80s were the very best decade. More experimentation and cross pollination of genres and technological leaps than any decade up to that point. I staunchly disagree with your opinion, but hey, it's your opinion.
Ha ha...!! So did I! Another class response indeed.
It doesn't just show the work ethic and the liveliness of the artists living in Sheffield but a lot of other things as well. Their right to have/organize a party, DIY ethic, their rebellion towards the conservative/old fashioned way of thinking, their looking into the future, breaking boundaries...etc etc. Practically all the things a true artist should do.
Exactly. I have read about it. In short it is like that Human League song which goes- "No future they say. But must it be that way? Now is calling... We should be happy, we should be glad, high rise living is not so bad, blind youth take hope...". It sums up the general attitude of people in Sheffield.
I like Philip Oakey's answer towards the end as well. He makes it seem so simple.
"Blind Youth" is one of the finest Human League songs ever. I like Phil's deep as hell voice in it a lot.
His very honest answer towards the end made me gutted, actually. "I wish it never stopped. I still miss Martyn and Ian very much 'cause we had such a great laugh." :-(
I recall him saying "I'd rather died thousands deaths than sounding anything like Yazoo and Depeche Mode" 27, 28 years ago. Ha ha. ...Competition, eh!
got this 2day for xmas from my clued up beautiful girlfriend and i'm puttin it on right now, merry christmas everybody and an end to wars in iraq and afghanistan in 2009 bring our boys and girls home safe !
Jarvis Cocker is one of the coolest figures in music ever IMO. Just imagine what he did behind Michael Jackson during the Brits 1995. And I say rightly so!
I always enjoy watching the doc a lot. And I watched it many times so far. It's never boring and tiresome. Can't wait for the next chapter of the story!
Correct! There are several versions of it indeed. The most familiar being the ones from the EP "Electronically Yours" released 1978 and the album "Travelogue" of two years later. :-)
He's in Heaven 17 and British Electric Foundation (B.E.F.). No recent news on him although he'll be touring UK together with the fellow city mates ABC and The Human League from November 30th to December 13th as a part of the Steel City Tour. There you go! ;-)
Yes, that is entirely true but you'll never know whether he'll decide to come back into the band by the start of the tour or not at all. With musicians anything's possible. He hasn't left them for good. There was no official statement of his of that. He's just doing some other things at the moment. Checked it better on their official site's message board. He's a lovely fella, isn't he?
Alongside the funny as hell Extras, the thing that has made me laugh out loud as well is Stephen Singleton's (Vice Versa/ABC) imitation of Def Leppard's sound - "Brm brm, blah blah blah blah blah, what about..." *LOL*
Def Leppard weren't the part of the scene featured in the documentary which is why they are given short shrift.
Joe Cocker, Cabaret Voltaire, Clock DVA, The Box, Hula, The Human League, Heaven 17, Artery, The Extras, 2.3., The Stunt Kites, I'm So Hollow, They Must Be Russians, Graph, The Comsat Angels, Vice Versa, ABC, Pulp, Def Leppard, Chakk, Moloko, Autechre, Little Man Tate, The Longpigs, Arctic Monkeys, The Long Blondes, Reverend And The Makers, 65daysofstatic, Bring Me The Horizon, Derek Bailey, Tony Oxley, All Seeing I, Ace, After Hours, Ann Lee, Babybird, Bromheads Jackets...
...Dave Berry, The Dylans, Frank White, Harrisons, Jody Wildgose, John Shuttleworth (a.k.a. Jilted John, Graham Fellows), Kurt Wagner, LFO, Living In A Box, Mark Gasser, Milburn, Olive, Paul Carrack, Pete Thomas, Reginald Dixon, Krush, Funky Warm...etc etc.
how come you know so much about sheffield mate? i'm 39 and lived here 39 years and didnt know all those bands, ps how come liverpool won ???????? they've done shit musically in the last 30 years, 2 come to mind - cast and them who sang altogether now oh and the lightning seeds !
I'm into Sheffield music scene a lot, especially the one between the late '70s and mid '90s. It is a city that has changed the face of British music for good as well. Electronic music revolution started right there. I had to check the Internet for the bands I haven't heard of before like Little Man Tate et al. I don't know how Liverpool won . But I assume it is for The Beatles alone. Yes, it is true that it didn't produced as many (worthy) bands as, say, Sheffield or Manchester indeed.
I think it's not as taking that this is the movie about Sheffield's musical scene of the mid - late '70s/early '80s I assume it is by one of its (Sheffield's) bands/artists. Devo (who I like as well) are American. But thanks for being help anyway! :-)
What is the song playing in this documentary? Can someone please let me know. I do remember listening to this in a club in West Germany back in mid-80's.
You can also find "Being boiled" on the Human League's "Travelogue", although it's a slightly different version. That's the first place I heard it. It's a great song. Has anyone else ever covered it?
hi my freind actually ther is a cover i heard about by wait for it jarvis cocker i.e pulp its great check it out actually my band do a cover too so maybe i should put mine up too ha jake
ABSOLUTELY you should put it up! I'd love to hear it, and I'll bet other people would too! I've been thinking about covering it for a long time. If I ever do, I'll post it as well.
And some of the '90s techno and hip hop artists sampled it as well. Yes, it is a great song indeed.
BTW, would like to ask, what is that song/instrumental that's featured during the slinging the guitar off the buildings in the documentary itself, not this trailer? Thanx in advance!
You can always purchase it over eBay, Amazon, Gemm and other online shopping services like this as well. It's not expensive at all. Loadsa highly interesting stuff in it. Its inner booklet is particulary superb too! ;-)
Worth seeing again and again. It has been a while since I have seen the dvd of this program. I never knew about Artery, vice versa, the extras and 2.3 until I saw this video. I have known about Heaven 17, The Human League, and ABC but it was very limited. The first time that I even saw a video from Cabaret Voltaire was in 1991 then it took me years just to search for Cabaret Voltaire's music. No matter how many years it might take a person, you will always find something new..
No matter how many years it might take a person, you will always find something new..cont.... from old groups.. :)[/QUOTE]
Absolutely agreed with you on this one, Jer!
I still wonder to myself of how much I can watch this DVD and never get bored or tired of it at all. Always interesting to watch even if you know the whole story. Top stuff!
I first got to know about Artery over the more familiar Mission (UK) who introduced Mick Brown (not in the doc) to their line-up after the original Sisters Of Mercy split later in 1985. Never knew 'bout The Extras until I saw the doc before either. Knew about everyone else mentioned, though. The first time I saw a Cabaret Voltaire video was on MTV circa 1987. "I Want You" was the one. Got hooked upon them ever since.
Oops! I made an unintentional mistake here. It wasn't Mick Brown but Simon Hinkler who joined the Mission (UK). Mick Brown was in Red Lorry Yellow Lorry (a Leeds band FYI) before he joined the Mission (UK) as well. So there!
I guess he wasn't available around the time of its shooting. But could be wrong. So, don't take me for granted. Richard H. Kirk is the Godfather of British electronica in general like we know now. The Cabs "Cabaret Voltaire 1974 - 1976" and "Methodology '74/'78. The Attic Tapes" compilations are the best proof of that.
Loved it. Saw it on the Documentary Channel. It was great. It was a glimpse into a scene that was very different from New Wave but has been lumped into it with the passage of time.
Hello from Florida. Interesting video, in a strange way. Strange, in an interesting way. But either way...I like learning about England and other world cultures.
Do you honestly believe that ANY well informed documentary maker would have missed that? I could see in this trailer that the makers knew without any mention of it...
Someone should organize a SHEFFEST featuring the acts that appear in the dvd. Martin Ware & co sounded great at their recent reunion at the Billy Mackenzie Tribute in London. Generate a bit of interest again.
Almost 30 years on all of it sounds as fresh as my worn out brain! Hey, if you want the other end of it there's always SLADE? There was a lot of energy to spare and you could get stuff out there while it was special...everybody can make an MP3 and nobody cares but if you pressed vinyl you were a deal. Vinyl was the bond between artist and listenerm and now we can 'sample' stuff like fudge brownies...no meaning!
Growing up in Sheffield at this time was great, i remember coming home from school and my mum had bought me Travelogue by the Human League (bless her!), and i still have it to this day!
I Think Relying on just guitars is boring, very limited, Narrow i might add. That´s why i don´t like grunge.
It Depends on the style off course and according to my personal tastes in music, there are very few exceptions. King Crimson, for instance. Their sounds are quite unbelievable.
well, at the time in the early 90's when everyone went back to guitar-y things, mainstream electronic music had become so vapid and overdone that there was a need for things to be back-to-basics. but i agree, if one does interesting things with the guitar it can be great.. Sonic Youth as an example.
I have this dvd and im trying to find the name of the punk song which has the green footage of the police riots on this doco...Does anyone else have this dvd?

There was a lot of energy to spare and you could get stuff out there while it was special...everybody can make an MP3 and nobody cares but if you pressed vinyl you were a deal. Vinyl was the bond between artist and listenerm and now we can 'sample' stuff like fudge brownies...no meaning!

And I like the slinging the guitar off the buildings...after experiencing The Human League I never want to hear another guitar.
Except in Duran Duran.

Phil Oakey in one music magazine circa 1985 said this: "I hate guitar based music!" ;-)
The slinging the guitar off the buildings is the hell of a scene! Luv it!

Damn good documentary. Much better than that other one on Sheffield. You know, the one with all the naked old men and lawn gnomes.

I Think We Haven´t Reached the Threshold of Synth Potential, so, i stand for more synths to this decade.
Their Posibilities are endless, and by the way, i use to get out very often.
