well i guess it's time to get myself into trouble....again! my take, i am not excited at all about the F-35. the reason is simple. has anyone seen the maneuverability of the SU-27, 30, 35? because their thrust-vectoring operate in the y and x axis, together or independently. incredible low speed maneuverability. try lining up for a kill against one of the SU's while flying the egg . worse try removing one from your 6 while flying egg maneuvers,
But the thing is that the F35 doesn't have to turn around to kill the SU's. With the DAS system he has full array radar and can shoot missiles at planes that are chasing his Six. The F35 takes away all the need to be maneuvrable if the DAS system does what it promises. Look it up... I was sceptic also about the F35. But after seen the DAS system i udnerstand they didn't make it so maneuvrable.
@WinchesterDelta1 I hope you understand that in a dog fight, all planes need to be maneuverable. Most modern jets have all-aspect missiles and HMD's which allow them to fire upon the F-35 back. The other planes however have the capability to use their maneuverability to try and outmaneuver the missiles, which the F-35 does not. Futher more, the F-35 currently lacks long distance missiles and the ability to maintain air superiority.
Yeah i do understand. But i hope you understand that there will be long range missiles foir the F35 and that the all aspect missiles you talk about are not all aspect at all yet. Therefore you need the EO DAS for ( Electro Optical Distributed aparture system). Than you will be able to fire the missiles in any direction at any time. The EO DAS system and F35 avionics suit is way better than any existing sensor system right now. Maneuvring in a dogfigt becomes virtual irrelevant.
@WinchesterDelta1 Well at the moment, the "long range missile" capability seems poor. The U.S. opted for the Meteor missile which has 45% greater range than the latest AMRAAM missile. The all aspect missiles I'm talking about is for an example, the IRIS-T which could effectively be fired upon en enemy 180° behind the aircraft. Even though the DAS system is a very modern system it's far from invincible.
@WinchesterDelta1 And the US didn't plan on just buying 150, but actually around 400-500. That's a HUGE difference from the original plan. And if you look at the YF-22/YF-23 contest, the YF-22 was chosen, not because it was the better aircraft, but it would be a better economical choice due to better industrial offset and a lower initial price. According to reports, the YF-23 was better than the YF-22 at a lot of important factors but the price was too high. Was that a good choice?
And i also hope you understand that the US military is not stupid. Especially with fighter jets. Boeing and Lockheed are not some engineers that came together to build a fighter jet in their garage just for fun. In almost all cases they know exactly what they are doing and how to accomlish it. Just look at their history.
@WinchesterDelta1 I'll just let you play with the thought, an F-35A engages a Eurofighter. The Eurofighter manages to see the F-35, lock upon it and fire from a long distance with the PIRATE-system, its AESA radar and the Meteor missile. The F-35 has 2 meteors inbound a few seconds apart, this long before the F-35 will be able to see the EF through its DAS system or its AESA. The F-35 DAS system might help to get away from one high-prob-kill missile, but not 2 without maneuverability
@WinchesterDelta1 And if the F-35 would get into an actual dog-fight, the EF also has 3 types of effective countermeasures. The EF would be able to shoot missiles at the F-35 aswell in the form of super-maneuverable IRIS-T missiles. The EF can try and outmaneuver its missiles and with countermeasures, this becomes more effective. The F-35 however lacks maneuverability and payload. A lot of 4.5 gen fighters have or will shortly have HMD's. The F-35 lacks in BVR combat and in WVR combat.
@WinchesterDelta1 And ofcorse the US military isn't stupid. HOWEVER, it's imporant to notice that as time, politics, economics and technology change, even the highest studied military plans can change and choices become poorly made. The F-35 was chosen, not to be the air-superiority fighter of the USAF but a complement to the F-22. The F-22 would ensure air superiority against airborne threats aswell as make initial strikes on AA sites and radar facilities before the F-35 is cleared to go in
With regards to F35...UK has a 40% share so we are tier 1 partners meaning we have full access although the others are not getting the same package as US/UK...in effect...they are getting ducks...
man, I wish Mexico could get some of those but the fucking gov't is corrupt as hell and they never invest in the country thats why its all fucked up in economy and military, military is getting better but still 20 years before they have one of those.
We like it a lot. Nos gusta mucho. It could be launched from a short carrier without a catapult. But, we don't know how well it would land in rough seas. Sería una buena compra para la Armada de Chile.
That movement like it wobbles is actually a control system keeping the aircraft in the air to help keep the f-35 centered or help in turning etc. Them are redundant electronic systems keeping control of the plane. That movement is supposed to be there or it would most likely roll over and fall out of the sky. I used to think the same thing. Support our Troops even if you don't support their leader they are the people that count the most.
I am no expert, but i say with that slow vertical landing, and bent over tail tip nozzel, there seems to be a very weak point in the structure of the plane, right where the extension of the nozzle happens.
but the f22 is a fighter plane and is faster but the f35 is more of a bomber plane but its can dogfight so its called multirole kinda like the difference between f15 and f16
F35 was developed to fly with the F22. And actually the F22 most useful weapon configuration is for bombing rather than fight. Plus the F35 can be carrier based.
The F22 can't be carrier based, for a start, the F35 can. Next, L/M planned on a huge government order of the F22 (over600 units) but been capped at just over 140, i believe, so the only way to recoup the development investment and go into profit would be to create a craft that can be exported. So they made the F35.
the F-22 is meant to replace the F-15, maintaining its job as the primary strike jet, covering air-air missions as well as bomb runs, whilst the F-35 is meant to replace the F-16, F-18 and the A-10, and that's also why the F-35 is available in three different versions. The F-35 is supposed to cover missions like CAS, bomb runs, reconnaissance missions, intercepting and dog-fighting and the availability to be able to take-off/land on carriers.
yes and no, the F35 isnt rplacing anything except maybe the f117 which was recently decomissioned, its a stealth fighter, its out of any a 10 or f18 league
@eatingjif according to the USAF themselves, it is. The F-117 is not an aircraft which it intends to replace. But you're absolutely right on that it lacks the ability to really replace all of those aircrafts. Sort of a "Jack of all trades but the master of none". No modern aircraft is really capable of replacing the A-10. And a modern navy jet almost needs to be of dual-engine set-up.

I doubt that. Also, the F35 was created in part because they wanted a cheaper plane that could serve the Air Force, Navy and Marines. The F22 isn't cheaper than the F35. o-o
