that shitty radio sound you hear is actually just guitar tone and it's part of the queen's distinctive charm. I guess it's meant to imitate an older style of rock and roll, like it's been sitting around awhile in a basement, like the patina on an old table.

This album is based on the drive between California and Mexico (not sure) and the lack thereof good radio stations. And some of the songs represent certain themes, "God is in the Radio" for religious themes. I hope that answers your question.

That's exactly it. This CD is inspirated on the drive through the californian desert, all the way to Mexico. The whole CD flows like what a person who sits in his car and turns on the radio hears, from the sound of the car's door closing to de station switches...
