In the Japanese Sonic games, he was known as Dr. Eggman from the beginning, but when the game was released in the US they changed his name to Robotnik. Eventually the Japanese "revealed" in one of the games that Eggman was something of a nickname and that his real name was Robotnik, so... yeah. ^^;
