I think EVERY Canadian kid from the 90's remembers this one! lol I think I was about 7 or 8 when it first hit the air and it used to terrify me! I remember it ran for quite a few years.
Don't you love though that Canadians have a non-profit organization like this willing to pay millions of dollars to try and keep youth safe and healthy?
@rfr4me us canadians always call americans arogant ironicly the more we critisize the more we become just like them,. I chose not to be judgemental over either country as they are both as equally bad as they are good XD. There is only one diference and that is that the US has the power to blow us off the face of the earth LOL
I don't remember that one..actually i dont even remember seeing an AIDS commercial til i startd watching BET when i was 11 and even then it was like rap it up..i always thought they were talking about presents [i was slow -_-]
I live in Ecuador and here they transmited PSAs from all over the world, they used to dub them (I think it was cheaper than make them from scratch) so we watched this one from Canada but the AIDS one with the reaper I think it was from Australia... just look for it... and you'll regret it to do it so
Americans, you never seem to SHUT. UP. when shooting your mouths off at whatever you please without even so much as elaborating to back yourselves up...
so is the rat the dealer? and he fills the syringe back up, from the muddy puddle, where one can find narcotics ? yay for rats! and puddles! an big ol 60's 100cc syringes!
Drugs are terrible. I've seen first hand what they do to several loved ones of mine and I had a problem at one time too. I've noticed in America they only advertise against smoking cigarettes and marijuana, but honestly that's the least people need to worry about right now. They need to go back to advertising against the stuff that will really kill you, I see children younger and younger doing the hard stuff.
Oh god I remember this one. Aired all the time during the Goosebumps/Are You Afraid of the Dark slot, haha. Obviously these were effective on some level if we still remember them, even if we may have been too young to understand the real message. I always thought the brain made out of wires was the scariest of the CCA ads, though XD
You know what? I know that this is scary. But I don't feel scared. Even when I was five, and I watched this, I knew it was scary but I wasn't scared at all. Weird.
The statement that this PSA was banned is untrue. Simply they felt that it was dated like the few other anti-drug PSAs, so it just isn't airing anymore. They still have the telecaster number for this, by the way. If it were banned, then why would they still have the number intact?
they're not saying u drink a syringe, it's like all the crap from the street (in this case a dirty puddle represents diease and dirty stuff) that we transfer to our bodies if we share needles. it has nothing to do with drinking water.
Uhhh, to scare kids! Weren't you paying attention? I second the last person up here. I never saw this until now either, & it's a good thing I didn't, cuz it woulda terrified me! I already had enough nightmares from other PSA's without adding on! Oooohhh!
So many of these CCA PSAs were so terrifying that they are stuck in my head permanently from when I was a child. There was also one with a puppet with scary eyes that traumatized me. I think the CCA ads were very effective. But I also think they were aired too early. They were just too dark for little kids who didn't understand the message anyway. I remember with this one being worried that the broken glass had hurt the mouse. I thought that was the "them" they were referring to.
man i wish i was there, so i know who threw the syringe and what was it actually like without the horrifying quality of the video and the chilling music.
Well when you inject into a vein blood rushes in and mixes with the drug first so when they borke it the glass and the needle had blood and shit allover it.
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLY SHIT. I remember this commercial. This thing gave me nightmares when i was small and its probably why i have needle phobias today lol
This is the creepiest commercial I've ever seen! It scared me as a child and it scares me now! That and "Why be you when you can be me". CCA had a lot of nightmare fuel...
I guess they thought the ad was effective in detering kids away from doing drugs. What they didn't realize was that from a kid's perspective it was a really scary ad and ended up detering me away from YTV.
If I can recall, there were some similar PSAs to this one that aired on YTV, also made by CCA. There were about four of them, one being titled "Elevator", and another titled "No Label On Drugs". Despite my best efforts, I was unable to find them.
I can't remember that well because this was around the time Teletoon first started (1997). The "Elevator" PSA, if memory serves me right, depicts an elevator going up to a certain floor, the cables snapping, then plummets at high speed while a narrator compares the effects of drugs to a broken elevator (or something along those lines. I might be confusing this with another PSA). These other three PSAs have since faded into obscurity.
I remember the elevator one, but didn't find it that scary. The scariest was the ciliac disease commerical they had a while before that. You remember that one?
I don't think they had a ciliac disease commercial (not that I know of). But it's proven that there were many excellent PSAs on TV back then. They really should bring those back!
The Concerned Children's Advertisers website at one point may have included these on their site but they don't anymore for some reason. I heard that the "Syringe" PSA (the one you are watching right now) has been banned from TV since 1996 because it was shown at "inappropriate" times during the day.
Omfg, I remember the mid 90's they used to play this alot on YTV here in Canada when they had that Treehouse preschool time slot. No clue how it got there, or during the evenings on weekends. These CCA psa's always made me think twice before turning on the TV
Dude. You think that's scary, you should check out Concerned Children's Advertisers: Substance Abuse Testimonials. The drug addict's name is Lisa. Just right the end of that commercial, she looks right at you. That's scares the living shit out of me.
This advertisement gave me lots of nightmares when I was young. It always came on at 7:30 pm, in between television shows. How the hell it got onto YTV is beyond me.
