Pretty incredible. This kind of thing simply did not exist before them, nor did most of the percussion instruments they're playing. They needed to invent them to get the sounds they wanted. HUGELY influential, basically all of electronic music flows from them.
Wow! I've never seen that one before. Fantastisch! I'm still reeling from the shock of finding out that Kraftwerk didn't have sequenced drum-machines for Trans Europe Express. All the percussion was done manually with those knitting needle things!
@xwsftassell Kraftwewrk were/are awesome but Giorgio Morodor invented much of electronic music as well. Forget the Donna Summer disco stuff he did, dig in to the other stuff he did, some of it was ground breaking and incredibly psychedelic.
I like these older performances where you can definitely tell it is a live performance, as it is not exactly like the studio version. In the later live touring videos, everything is so well polished that I'm not sure they are actually playing.
Kraftwerk`s music historical achievement is that they have transfered electronic music from sound labs, esoterical & avant-garde circles into pop(ular) culture!
They did not use synths to reproduce traditional songs or classical music (like Kingsley, Carlos) or to pimp up rock songs (like ELO, Yes).
They wanted to create a new and distictive form of electronic pop-music - and this is exactly what they did.

Kraftwerk and Larry Fast were the greatest influences on modern electronic pop music. they were the only groups that when something new came out I had to have it
Let us not forget the Beatles' late 60's electronic music ties. Not only was Here Comes The Sun one of the first recorded uses of a Moog, but if you've never heard it, you should look into GH's solo work from that period. Do a search here on youtube for his Electronic Sound album tracks. And how many bands could get a whole generation of pop fans to listen to something like Revolution 9? Not saying the Beatles or Kraftwerk were more or less influential, as those things are totally incalculable.
Yes, they did. They built their own drum pads from scratch in 1973, Do a search here for the video "Tanzmusik", and you will see Wolfgang playing it. And they used drum machines on the Kraftwerk 2 album in 1972.
Old comment, but to reply, I saw them in 1975 in Tulsa, Oklahoma (most of the audience walked out while they were playing an earlier piece, possibly "Kling Klang"), and by my memory this is exactly what it sounded like. They were expert technicians.
No they didn't. Carl Palmer used electronic percussion on the ELP track Toccata in 1973. At that time, I don't think Kraftwerk were using their electronic percussion units yet.
This was and still is massively influential of course, but mainly in terms of the instruments they were using; the song structure, melodies, harmonies, rhythms... none of this was in any way new or radical.
I love reference to 'speed cars' on the autobahn as I remember myself driving my 1969 Volkawagon 'Bug' in New York in 1975 ...listening to Autobahn on my 8-track tape player thinking I was the only person listening to this music....great that these tapes are available on the internet here on Youtube!!!
What most people are failing to realize is that THEY are LOVING what they are creating, and that element holds its own...Nobody is better than anyone else or even comparable in that regard...Just be glad that you can be apart of these fantastic creations by just listening... What have you created?
I can remember 'Autobahn' as their first big hit in '75, I was a pre-teen @ the time; they were truly 'one of a kind' then..though I do think 'Tangerine Dream' was around then, too..
Plus, Kraftwerk sounds better sonically. Their records are warmer and sweeter sounding than The Beatles. Early Beatles records sound like pieces of tin. And let's not forget that Kraftwerk built some of their own freakin' instruments for crying out loud! John Lennon was on his whole stupid hippie "All You Need Is Love" trip, lying naked in bed with Yoko while real social change and radical culture shifting was taking place in Germany and France during the late 60's.
yes, i would say, that i am a kraftwerk-fan for decades. and i am from germany. _but_ my opinion changed a little bit about the influence of kraftwerk of many electro-bands. there are many more influences as strong at the same level as kraftwerk. for example, the music of 'clockwork orange' by wendy carlos or keith emerson - have a look at the excellent documentary 'synth britannia' - you should find it on youtube. of course, for me kraftwerk is still one of the most influential bands.
Man, imagine what the "dazed and confused", spicolli american high school crowd must've thought of these guys when they came on the scene!!!! This is a big departure to listening to Zep, Sabbath, and Foghat!!! L.O.L.
No words really to describe how amazing and influential Kraftwerk have been, I can remember hearing an edit of Autobhan on a kids TV show back in 76 aged about 10 and being blown away! Yes, strangely, I find Florian attractive (!lol) - he seems like a decent bloke too, so sorry to hear he's left Kraftwerk:-(
They may have gone on to greater success and adoraration in the following few years but this period in their career seems to have a more natural, free flowing and fulfilling aspect to it which makes it so much easier to get into and just go with compared to some of their later stuff.
Well, I was an '80s stoner, so that wouild make it different :-D Nevertheless, Lester bangs was impressed enough to write about them. But I don't know if he was impressed in a positive way or a negative one...
@MondoReyTV1 cheers then, their whole image and music rallied against the stoner aesthetic, though that doesn't mean stoners can't get into them. but i don't see many stoners getting into a band wearing suits and ties and playing music that at times sounded like kids' nursery rhymes
Ahh..this is the Kraftwerk I enjoy the most. For as much as I like Kraftwerk, to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of later Kraftwerk like the whole "We are the Robots" thing and what not. I just like the earlier stuff alot more with Autobahn and Radio-Activity ^_^
What a great video, Krafterk are gods of electronic music, I love them. And Ralf, he is soo handsome here. Hope to see them on concert in the near future.
Truly, the most influential electronic band to come along since i have been alive. They are not only great musicians, they formed a new kind of music, and how many of todays bands can really say that. To this day when i hear Kraftwerk they still amaze me. Just an opinion!
I think they are the most influential band of all time. the Beatles fanatics will disagree. my argument is: the Beatles influenced many rock bands, but Kraftwerk have influenced every electro act, as well as the hip hop movement. what they were doing in the 70's was far more innovative than the Beatles a decade earlier. not a stringed instrument in sight!
The Beatles were hardly without influence themselves.Lennon and McCartney had heard lots of rock, blues and other less famous genres, and blended it together to form "their sound".
Beatles may get all the spotligt, but others like the Rolling Stones and The Kinks were equally influental to later music
Kraftwerk really made something completely different.Music for a more civilized world, if I may say so.Sadly our civilization took a turn for the worse..
Africa Bambata (I think that's how you spell it) actually sampled One of Kraftwerks beats and one of Kraftwerks Melodies, and put them together, and he claims that he created Hip-Hop with this... Yeah, right...
hip-hop that we know of today were inspired by kraftwerk. in early 80's all tha break dance movement etc. not to mention ALL the electronic music that we hear today
@Coldacre I had never thought about it, you're completely right, and I love The Beatles. But Kraftwerk has even influenced the what's now known as the "funk carioca", from Brazil. And another point is that they are responsible for lots of innovation in electronic instruments. The're the greatest, indeed.
i so agree.. it's a shame that not many people know about them... brian eno once said that this was the sound of the future.. as great as the beatles are, this is just so much farther ahead
maybe not as big as the beatles, but people do know about kraftwerk...I just heard a local hip hop radio station play two kraftwerk songs on a bass/electro mix! then again I am in Miami, and the bass DJs over here love their kraftwerk....
@Coldacre I think your right to an extent...but both bands influence can be felt in every aspect of music..the beatles were oneof the first bands to incorporate loops and sound editing into their music as well as sound collages (revolution #9) but kraftwerk are brilliant in a completly different way im not sure you can compare the two...they are both so ahead of their time, in some ways kraftwerk even outdid themselves.
I don't see how that makes Kraftwerk more influential. They both influenced different genres of music. The difference is that the way the Beatles made music, writing their own and relying on themselves as much as they can, not to mention virtually creating the "concept album" influenced all subsequent musicians, including Kraftwerk.
@Vebinz The Beatles focused more on left field, obtuse lyrics and clever marketing. Kraftwerk spent more time on creating new sounds, new concepts; building their own instruments and were far more technically proficient in playing them. They didn't create electronic music out of thin air, but they, along with Tangerine Dream brought it out of the lab. Put on The Man Machine and Computer World next to Sgt. Pepper and The White Album and see which ones are the freshest and most relevant.
But how can you credit them for taking electronic music "out of the lab", when Wendy Carlos, Gershon Kingsley, and Jean-Jacques Perrey did that years before?
To me, Kraftwerk accomplishment was in combining synth music with a pop sound, a pop sound that comes from a tradition the Beetles helped create (The Beach Boys are a major influence on them).
Kraftwerk rank among the 5 or 6 most revolutionary musicians. But I don't know if they can quite top the list.
@Coldacre I agree. Beatles follow a trend imported from US and just added some of the british culture and tradition. I would considered Elvis more influential than Beatles. Krafwerk started a new whole thing from the devastated pos-war Germany rejecting what came from america and the beat thing, on a language not even close widespread as english is. It was a fresh blank page start wich generates Electronic, Techno, Cosmic, Industrial, Hip hop, Ambient, and so on.

@leeward66 Yes they are. BUT, from what I had learned not to long ago, Kraftwerk's latter style during the 70's came from Giorgio Moroder. I thought that it was the opposite until I read an interview from him. Kraftwerk liked his electro Disco style, which really is the origin of what he hear today in House Music (I hate house music) but his style was more on the Electronica style that you hear coming from Kraftwerk during the mid 70's to early 80's.
Y'know, when I think about it, it looks like every piece of music is played live. It's a big difference to most other electronic bands, which use backing tapes. Truly a sign of how good Kraftwerk's musicians are. :)
thanks for the video ! is the kind of video that i want to find of kraftwerk, at the 75s times. The sound of sintetizer are amazing!! Can you tell me the exact place that you found it ? I search in the page thath you talk in the comentary, but i cant find the section where are the videos.
Well, if we had only this video, same thing we could say about the drumming part: it seems asif Wolfgang were doing a lot more than Karl. The truth is that Karl, being himself a great musician, looks underused here. Anyway, he looks so cute, so young, playing the electric percussion, seat on the chair, happy as a kid with his tindrum he he (lovely smile too :D).
I remember watching this very episode. I was only 13 at the time and just really getting into music and this just blew me away. Thanks to the poster of this video.
Thanks for a version of my favorite Kraftwerk song that I've never seen or heard. It was cool seeing them from their early days with those antique synthesizers.
Ha Ha! You're right..i never made the correlation between the name of the song and what i was thinking..I guess kraftwerk got what they were trying to get across in song about a highway..
This is fantastic i never se in my life a performance of kraftwerk in 1975, this is so beautiful thanks a lot rasslsk this is a peace of gold very rare. =) i am crying right now this is track is amazing.Good capure thanks a lot !!!!
I remember listening to this long before 1974 or 5. It could have been as early as late 71 or 72

They didn't create electronic music out of thin air, but they, along with Tangerine Dream brought it out of the lab. Put on The Man Machine and Computer World next to Sgt. Pepper and The White Album and see which ones are the freshest and most relevant.

@electrokinesis
My opinion anyhow

@Coldacre I agree. Beatles follow a trend imported from US and just added some of the british culture and tradition. I would considered Elvis more influential than Beatles. Krafwerk started a new whole thing from the devastated pos-war Germany rejecting what came from america and the beat thing, on a language not even close widespread as english is. It was a fresh blank page start wich generates Electronic, Techno, Cosmic, Industrial, Hip hop, Ambient, and so on.

@Coldacre 110% agree. kraftwerk and the velvet underground are the two most innovative/influential groups ever

Tons of producers of music, DJ's and other famous artists today admit Kraftwerk has been an influence.
Not to mention they are on of the most sampled artists of all time.

@leeward66 i think blur can say that too

Y'know, when I think about it, it looks like every piece of music is played live. It's a big difference to most other electronic bands, which use backing tapes. Truly a sign of how good Kraftwerk's musicians are. :)

This is a wonderful video really :)

Thanks for a version of my favorite Kraftwerk song that I've never seen or heard. It was cool seeing them from their early days with those antique synthesizers.

Song makes me think of fuel efficient cars for some reason..
HalfLifeAMD 3 years ago 2
That's because the song is about riding the highway. "Autobahn" is "Highway" in German.
QAFtuvok101 3 years ago
Ha Ha! You're right..i never made the correlation between the name of the song and what i was thinking..I guess kraftwerk got what they were trying to get across in song about a highway..

first to use electronic drum pads I think.
Look at them, the thin drum sticks are
connected to wires in back.
DallasLuvster 3 years ago 3
Brilliant. These guys are true pioneers, the music is so unique, it takes you to another world. Today's electronic music isn't half as good.
Check out a band called "Black Mountain", their songs feature synths similar to Kraftwerk's.
