This is a prime example of Clapton at this stage in his life. He has often said that after the Yardbirds, Mayall, Cream, etc. he was desperate to get away from the whole "Clapton is God" thing and move into background. Here he demostrates his ability to be subtle, yet still tranform a piece of music into a work of art. His minimalist approach was perfect for this number. Of course, they are all stoned completely out of their gourds, but then so was 99% of the audience.
Ric Grech uses foam under his strings to mute them and create a more Upright Bass tone. the early Fender Jazz basses had string mutes built into the bass under the bridge cover to create than "Jazz" tone from the factory. Nowadays, most studio players still use foam under the strings when trying to get the vintage fender tone. Works like a charm!
all i know is now i know why claptin stoped making music w/stevie, he probably looked over and said "god damn, thats e-nuff of this dude, he is seriously making me look like a queer"
Whoa, I just watched this again and noticed Rick Grech had a strip of foam under his strings in front of the bridge. I guess when one is playing through a stack of Marshall's, one might need this. Incredible video. People may not understand now that these guys were on the bleeding edge of musical innovation. Check out Winwood and Chris Wood's (RIP) contributions on Electric Ladyland.
The 12 year old girl on the cover of the album holding the chrome hood ornament was Ginger Bakers Daughter !!!....that chrome airplane is sitting on top of Windwoods organ if you look closely maybe its his RMI piano ....
Rick Grech playing the bass was from the group "Family". Who cares if they sound unrehearsed! They were incredible and sadly had only one album. Derek and the Dominos came next for Eric, and Steve, Rick and Ginger went on to Ginger Baker's Air force. After that Steve reformed Traffic and Rick played on 2 albums. Rick Grech died of alcoholism at the age of 42 in 1990.
Bought this concert DVD and it's the best music investment I've made in a long time. Brings me back to the good old days when I was a teen and the music was pure and heartfelt. Thanks for the post!
So typical of video or films of rock bands shot in this era are the over-emphasis on close-ups, especially where completely inappropriate. If you could see what the players were playing, it would make for a much more visually cohesive presentation. Unfortunately, hippy-dippy artistic expression (read: not a clue how to shoot properly) ruled the day. What a shame, because this is a legendary performance by one of that eras greatest groups.
@liamtz ....The whole band was unrehearsed if you think about it.....that's the magical beauty of the once in a lifetime album.....Not to mention they threw in some naked breasts for your trouble on the album cover!
Stevie Winwood is great but Ginger Baker was such a phenomenal drummer. I'm sorry about his mom and all. If I could only go back to1969 - just for an hour and be right where they all are.
@jewboy831 It gives your bass a more acoustic sound when you put the foam under the bridge. Paul McCartney did that alot when he was with The Beatles.
great editing. great song and gig! clapton wrote in his autobiography that he didn't like the way they sounded here, too "small and tinny" was how he put it but i think Blind Faith really rocked out. i wish my band could be like these guys.
what an amazing song after 40 years. and what a rich voice steve winwood has! god, he looks like he's no more than 23...i must say the video editing is hilarious.
would have loved to been at this concert .... nice, don't think I ever saw any of these guys "live". you gotta read Clapton's Autobiography, he talks about this concert... great book...
I agree ! Not only that but twelve or fifteen years ago we probably wouldn't be seeing this rather rare vid - only nowadays, with this outpouring of video on youtube, does something like this so historic and here-to-fore extremely rare vid come to light. Stop to consider that, people. Keep the Internet Free from Gov't Interference (and their conjugate lovers- the Music Industry) !!!
the world needs people like you to take their trash out, and sort out the bits that your kids can gum to death because you are a troll. Not too far of the mark, huh?
yes Thunder is How I, exactly described Him ,When I seen Cream 68' He got a huge sound , and players today have no idea about bands then. I, was almost onstage [close] and had to Back up some rows .......
the reason why Clapton is so "unenthusiastic" is because they started blind faith NOT to be another huge group.Clapton is sober for almost 20 years now. I heard him speak @ an AA mtg about how he was CONSTANTLY running from fame.....
I heard that it was because he was so used the crowd going wild for Cream and this was like the other end of the spectrum. At least his boredom didn't comprimise his playing. Great gig.
Bands today are in huge deficit of real playing ability, creative talent ,and anything NEW ...I say this cause I seen all these Bands Live and they were the real deal .. not Gumbys today.
the story behind that was imo claptons drug abusing. winwood said that he wrote that song for a good friend who has problems with drugs, and barely cant find his way home.
Steve Winwood has always been ahead of his time, so was E.C. Winwood is the only person I've never seen live and I soooooo regret it. Maybe he'll tour sometime when I can afford a ticket.
Steve Winwood has just 21 turned years of age here. They don't make musicians like this anymore.

Can anybody tell me why Ric Grech (the bass player) has a piece of foam underneath his strings?
metart93 5 months ago
@metart93 So they don't vibrate too much and hit the thing at the end of the bass making a buzzing sound. I do that for my guitar

@alans714 Rick Gretch was a friend of Windwood's i think.
He was in some art folk band(?) but he started jamming with this guys thankfully.
He also plays violin in some of the songs like sea of joy.

And you can hear the organ and guitar player weave their seperate sounds into one song.

Lyrics
Come down off your throne and leave your body alone - somebody must change
You are the reason Ive been waiting so long - somebody holds the key
Well, Im near the end and I just aint got the time
And Im wasted and I cant find my way home
Come down on your own and leave your body alone - somebody must change
You are the reason Ive been waiting all these years - somebody holds the key
Well, Im near the end and I just aint got the time
And Im wasted and I cant find my way home

Great live song.
What is the history of this song and who's playing what instruments?
sanfranciscobay 3 years ago
clapton, guitar
baker, drums
winwood, organ and vocals
grech, bass
the story behind that was imo claptons drug abusing. winwood said that he wrote that song for a good friend who has problems with drugs, and barely cant find his way home.
