I actually succeeded in opening the coconut (with a hammer and a screwdriver {which I sterilized by the way}... I didn't know what else to use). I wish I would of watched a video first! It was so hard to open! What an experience! The inside was dry and not slimy. Was this considered an old one? How do I get them so they are just right? Thank you for posting the video and I would appreciate a reply so that I can try again with more success.
@ODATMicki To get a fresh one like I ate in this video, it has to be picked within the past couple of days. It's also important that the tree not be very old. If you are in the U.S., I don't think it's possible to get this kind of coconut. Maybe you can try at a Filipino store if you're on the West coast. Otherwise, you'll have to go to the tropics to have the kind of coconut in this video. The brown ones are not good for anything except to shred it and put it in a dessert or something.
@baguiosteve if the brown is not rotted you can eat the "meat" , also to protect from sun if you apply directly to skin , yes you can do a variety of desserts from the meat. There's a problem opposed to what you see in survival TV shows if there is no water available should not go crazy drinking the coconut water or eating the "meat" as it functions as a diuretic and natural laxative in consumed in large quantities specially if you are not used to consume it regularly.
i just bought 2 brown ones and were they gross man i dont know how they make them taste good on pies and stuff must be all the sugar but man these were nasty gross WOW IS ALL I CAN SAY . i aint climbing no tree for this garbage lol i can tell you that
@pwngu1nwh....There are few different coconut..but the one you are reffering,,The BROWN cocnuts its an old coconuts..meaning when they get old,,they developed that shell inside thats the brown shell..and the white meat inside get thicker.....and the juice get sour...sometimes it taste like oil.....or perfume..and you can make wine too...
I've had that perfume taste that you're talking about too, but another "brown one" fresh off the beach that I had found tasted more creamy-ish, like coffee creamer....
These are the same as the brown coconuts that you buy from the shops/market. Only it has been dehusked and cooked so that the milk doesn't spoil as quick which also makes the white fleshy bit hard. You gotta try a fresh coconut, I wont even go near those market ones anymore!
i remember when i went to Vietnam and i was at the beach and these kid ask me if i wanted fresh coconut and i said sure and they climb up a tree and got it and cut in front of me it was yummy
man, no way of explaining my excitment when stumbling across this video on my quest to find out how to eat a coconut. i couldn't ask for more help, this is a masterpiece and deserves nothing more than a pat on the back, well done friend. x p.s. coconuts are very nice x
Steve you got the hard young coconut. You should have the one that is a bit softer and younger than the you were scoping. I'm filipino and been eating silot (young coconut) as a kid. I miss it.
whenenver i eat a coconot, i just throw the coconut really high and then when it falls it will break, then rip it open and eat it

Does this coconut taste different from the brown coconuts, because I just tasted a brown one and it tasted like perfume.
