No one's probably gonna read this, but I’ll say it anyway cuz I feel at least 1 person will. I'm a young designer and graffiti artist, I know there's a million out there but I feel like my art has a unique individual style.
If you just take a min and give me a chance I'll make you a believer. I would love nothing more than to have a loyal following on youtube. If anyone who reads this could press the "THUMBS UP" others will see it. Just a simple button push will make a huge difference.
I heard this song was recorded at Sun Records in Memphis,Tenn....the same studio where Elvis Presley first recorded. Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis also recorded at Sun.
"I was there when they crucified my Lord. I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword. I threw the dice when the pierced His side, but I've seen Love conquer the great divide!" ✝ ♥
@divineonenl At the time this was done, BB needed all the exposure he could get. U2 needed every bit of celebrity endorsement they could get because they were relatively new on the scene. It was totally a commercial endeavor, but I like the results. I find both U2 and BB to be necessary for this magic to have occurred.
@Circumpunk U2 was new on the scene? They had been around for about 10 years before this done. They released some of the biggest albums of the 1980's (Joshua Tree, Unforgettable Fire, and more). BB King didn't need any more exposure either. He was established on his own back to the 1960's. This came about because BB King said he admired Bono's song writing and Bono responded that he loved BB King's singing. They decided next to do a song together.
@shelleyinthecity Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the song. U2 were playing high school gyms 10 years before this tour. BB King was popular among mostly African Americans and blues fans. Both benefitted greatly from this collaboration artistically and financially. A very satisfactory arrangement by most people's standards. I think fans benefitted the most. This song means a lot to me personnally.
Circumpunk: Sorry to upset you. I wasn't commenting on your video, as I like yours much better than the live versions. Just commenting on a couple of the postings.
At the 2:35 mark of the song, BB sings of the crucifixion of Jesus. The whole song is about a guy who does wrong until "love" comes to town. At that time, Bono was in a more religious phase, and even he referenced it in interviews regarding this subtext.
Thanks for putting stuff on You Tube, as you've got good taste in music.
Seems odd that much of the comment posts are profanity laced, especially considering that this song is known for "Love" standing for Jesus Christ, as even mentioned in the lyrics.
@JoeGolfKing If the language is offensive to you as your dragging religion into this song that doesn't mention Jesus, don't watch it again and tell all your friends who won't like it to stay away as well.
Jesus didn't mind the publicans, why do you? They didn't take His name in vain, so why complain?
@Circumpunk How can you say that it doesn't mention Jesus?? There is a whole verse talking about his crucifiction. "I was there when they crucified my lord. I held the scabbard while the soldier drew his sword. I threw the dice while they pierce his side. But i've seen love conquer the great divide." This song clearly is talking about the Love of Christ. Thats what makes it so powerful and awesome. Maybe if you would actually listen to the lyrics you could understand.
@usmrugger Maybe you should have read my apology to JoeGolfKing. I won't waste one on you. The song stands as is. I didn't post it with that line in mind. Perhaps you should listen to what makes it a blues song. They are singing to a woman about past sins. The point of the line is guilt. What greater guilt can a Western man have that that crucifixion? It is a metaphor, do you know that word?
@usmrugger Maybe trains, flames and jukejoints are biblical references. Interpretations are individual. I don't like the born agains coming here with their takes on what Bono meant. The conversations distract the viewer from what the song means to them.Look at the rest of U2's catalogue. Tell me where they are today. Certainly not the gospel you interpret this as. I am very happy you found something inspirational in this song. So did I, just not the same thing.
@Circumpunk Makes me sad to see people twisting around a good song into something its not. It is clearly written as a spiritual song but if you can't see that there is nothing I can do.
@usmrugger Got ya bro! As I said interpretation is personal. I am married to a woman who has put up with too much. So I find my own inspiration in this. Repentance, redemption and reconcilliation. Are these not Christian concepts? These appy to all relationships friends, families, spouses. That is what drew me to this back in the day, and yes the Christian aspects as well. I wasn't raised a heathen and am not an atheist. I just prefer 'witnessing" to be done in private, say a PM? I'll listen.
I responded to you right after I got back from a long day and noo food. I am gald you set me straight. Thanks man! I forgot the lyrics or really wasn't thinking about them when I saw your comment. This song is abouit redemption something we all could use. I get bombarded daily by bigots of some stripe and didn't take the time to think before I engaged my yak-hole. Please accept my apology. I will come to your channel and visit after I dis-engage my bigot button!
