I have the Pultec Pro and the 1081. I use the 1081 every session, the Pultec Pro...once in a while. The 1081 really let's you sculpt the sound where the Pultec is more for subtle, tasteful enhancements...
This helps, great post. I like the Pultec for my needs, found a fake once, but can I get this in hardware/outboard? Also the 1081 sounds soul, the 1073 is obviously not for me, if it werent' something that needed saving, so to speak. Maybe the highs on vox? I like Universal Audio, but have never tried the plugs.
I purchased the UAD-2 Duo Flexi & have been trying to decide which plugs to get first with limited budget; this month Neves are on sale; I was trying to decide between the 1073 & 1081; in every example here the 1073 was sweeter, prob. due to the 12kHz HiShelf. I question the choice of 190 Hz on the 1081 here to compete w/ 1073 110Hz (100 is closer).
The Helios: smeary/ringy mid; the Pultec thumps in a tubey way; both have their uses. UAD is great!
Sounds pretty amazing for the vocals & we all got to remember youtube lowers the quality of the audio when you upload a vid on here so yes i must say damn it sounds great i can only imagine what it sounds like in person..
First of all their fixed frequency selections are way different from each other, some may even be much louder than other because of their gain behaviors.
And for those who are wondering UAD plugins do not, I repeat do not SATURATE!!!
It's all about the sound you are looking for and it really does not matter what you use to achieve that sound. A good tool is a good tool and the weakest link is the user of the tool..use either your hardware or software creatively and scientifically and you ar egood good. I have heard sound smasterd with hardware that I did no like and masterd same track with good plus and my "ears" and was happy with the sound I got because that was what I was looking for.
Brilliant EQ's, but if I am to be brutally honest, I could only really hear the differences of them on the guitars and drums. On the vocals and the bass, they all sounded kind of similar, to me anyways.
Real equipment does not sound better it sounds more analoge or less digital. The peeps who say that it is just binary code are not real musicians or producers. If UAD and Waves were just binary code, real producers with thousand of dollars worth of equipment would not use them. There is a reason why real producers use pluggins, it is because they are that good.
Some of you posters are suspect, I dont really think you produce or know anything about music with some of these comments.
Plugin's do and and will not come close to the actual original. The settings do the same but the sound is always different. "Better" in engineering is highly subjective. People, and by people I mean very experienced professionals, all agree that digital sounds 'cold' and/or 'sterile'. Hardware has character and no pieces sound exactly alike. People use plugins for convenience. A emulation will not sound as 'fat' as the original. I engineer professionally.
We know that the real product is always better than the emulation. The better your ADDA conversion is, the more color you can hear in your plugins. You say that plugins can not sound like hardware. But Hardware are plugins. With the exception of Tubes and the like, you have a machine that processos sound. These pieces of hardware can be built. They go through circuits. Software utilized your hardware.I have heard software that come close to hardware. One such hardware are the UAD.
The fact is that for the Hardware, you need alot of money. This is not feasible to the modern musician.
It is similar to Reason 4, which many claim can not compare to harware synths. It can not, but it is about 75 percent there, For about a fraction of the cost of Hardware with a lot more options. If i can get software that can come about 75% as close to hardware that is all I need. This comes at a fraction of the cost. With a prisim HD interface, you can come close to hardware for less
If you are poor as a musician, you probably aren't doing it right :p (Just pulling some strings) References are great, however after doing your pre production you'll probably want to go to a real studio to get the best result possible. Not buying the plug-ins will save you a couple bucks there ;)
I can afford to get the real stuff and in my line of work (studio owner/engineer) it works better for me. I hate using plugin's so for me the extra cost isn't a burden. I pay big bucks for big sound.
No matter what, the real hardware is always better in sound. But even though plug ins lack the real deal, they are more convenient to use and can remember your previous used settings. What is more important to you? Thats the question.
Although 3 people, who don't know what they are talking about, gave you tumbs down. You are on the money (although 'better' is still subjective). If you want to come close but don't have the 3,4,5 grand for that one piece of gear. You grab the next best thing. Also, if your project goes back and worth to other studios, then plugins are more convenient.
I'm all about the hardware and could care less about what I've spent to get originals.
I recommend anyone considering these plugins go to the uAD website to watch the videos-- the encoding/ data compression here on youtube really limits what you can hear.
he well i listened again and i heard some difference , more hi frequences on the drums , and some kind of difference on the bass , but the vocals sounded the same to me bypassed or not...
my ear is just not trained well enough to hear every difference
Dazzelya is right on. Close, but not the same. And I use them as well for convenience, time savers, recall, etc. I used them very little. Like spices, dash here and a dash there. A pro uses plugs for a certain effect, sound, convenience, recall, etc. They don't use them because a plug in sounds better than the hardware. Name one plug in that sounds better than the real thing? Thats my question for Younggen0
I think this cheap video/audio channel site does not help UA products... I think these videos should be on a better channel! LIKE STAGE 6... Which is hi res and Hi Fi.
Better yet! I'll do my own UAD videos and post them on my Stage6 channel.
What you need to do is Let the Audio Loop and Switch Between the various plugins So that the end listener can hear the A and B mix When you stop we really dont hear the diff between each plugin because they all are great plugins we can hear what this plugin is doing to the sound in comparison to the dry mix.
From how u are presenting this we can only compare the sound between each plugin which IMOP I dont hear any noticable diff!
Here's what my ears seem to like best:
Vocals-Pultec
Drums-1081
Bass-1073
Guitar-Pultec

As poor modern musicians were not trying to beat hardware. We are trying to use a reference point for our music. So that it is clean and enjoyable.
You will probably say that coming close to hardware with software plugins is subjective.
Your right digital is inferior to analog, at least in the consumer market. There is always a lack of character with digital.
If you want, you and I can put pieces of music up and see what the masses think. In whatever format you want.
