This performance was so incredibly great that I don`t have the words for it. Flawless control, timbre and range. He makes me proud to be half Swedish.
Hey! Let s sing and play as long as we are young and alive. That s some sort of a translation. Hard to translate perfect in English. The song is old Swedish Trad. Sung in a Dalarna accent of Swedish.
Jussilicious! But I wish this film would come out on DVD, with subtitles. The VHS copy I have is an obvious dupe, that came from something that had been duped about 5,000 times already. Bogus....
Im from Norway.I dont fucking care about sports, but i know one thing fore sure and thats Sweden are light years above us when it comes to music and film.
@steinsteel Except for the fact that it was a Norwegian who who made by far the most beautiful music by any scandinavian. Or maybe the most beautiful by any man. Jussi actually sang some of this songs. I don't have to say who, do I?
No NO No noNOOO HOW was he able to hold that last note so long without straining?? I am going to need to find out the secret of this. His father told him this secret and I must know it.
@Imforeverone88 : You ask how? With superb breath control. A roomy chest and broad shoulders that allow optimal lung expansion. Also Jussi had great "topspin"--propulsive resonance. If the tone is produced correctly (which it is here)--in the head and not the throat --a big supply of breath can let you hang onto it for ages. I am a voice teacher, and there is no strain in that high note. If there is a "secret," it is about getting all that breath, and I'd love to know it too!
@Imforeverone88 The secret is inside you and all of us already and is so simple yet it is the hardest thing for the mind to comprehend. Most modern teachers can't even grasp the idea. Tone & notes do not belong in a singers mind when singing - only words, expressed truly and naturally. The voice takes second place in a song.
@Imforeverone88 You can subscribe and send me your questions. There really is no secret to singing though. If you are blessed with speech then you have all you need to sing inside you. Listen to the singers on my channel. They are a free lesson in themselves.
OMG I think I just soiled myself listening to that...when he went to the high C, I thought he was just gonna hold it for a couple seconds, but NO, he held it for eternity and a day or so...LOL
Jussi Björling was naturally gifted! He remains one of the greatest tenor of the 20th Century. The Only Mystery is : Why isn't he as popular as Pavarotti? Anyone in the street knows Pavarotti. With the best effort, Björling may seem for them a Tennis player. Youcef
I suppose 1938 was in his prime being still young and powerful, but with the confidence of an early success. And this is a movie, so there might have been som retakes too. But Jussi is wonderful in Swedish, during the WWII he was something of an national Icon, singing patiotic hymns and so.
It's a traditional swedish drinking song with old spellings (all the -om endings for example) and pronounciations. Apparently it's called "Let us be cheerfull" in english. Some words I have no idea how to translate, "dunkom" ("let us be cheerfull" seems kind of far fetched. "have fun"? The word in itself is in a swedish context probably supposed to connote the sound of people dancing on a wodden floor, *dunk dunk dunk*) and "kvintilerom" (could sort of be taken to mean "sound like a bird").
"Daler" or "riksdaler" is an old swedish currency. "Hej" litterally means "Hello" but in this context it's more like "Oi!" or "Woha!" or "Yey!" or whatever.
Hello, dunkom as long as we may live!
Sing, dance, have fun every day!
Hello dunkom and kvintilerom!
Thus my father did and so do I.
For nineteen daler today and twenty daler yesterday.

When I hear Dutch, I cannot understand much. But I can read a lot of it. A lot of words are more close in Dutch and Swedish than compared with English and German. Obviously the Vikings made little trips to a lot of shores...
I think the Hanseatic league spoke a kind of german that sounded more like dutch than high german. And since big cities in Sweden was under heavy influence from the Hanseatic league, it's probably the Swedish language that has been changed towards the dutch language. I'm not an expert so I might be wrong.
It doesn't make much sense, but you can rest assured that it doesn't make that much sense in swedish either. There are also at least two more verses to this song that I'm aware of.
Holy jamoly, I ran to my piano and confirmed what you said here. 7 freekin seconds of a crystaline hi C. He was probably in his 30's in this clip. Amazing, truly amazing. Jussi was in the top 3 of all time. Fair appraisal? Bravo FacePaster
He always sang older than he was. He was actually only 26 when the recordings for the film were done in Aug-Nov 1937. This is one of my favorites because it really shows the nature of how he sang so naturally.
Finally I can see Bjorling in motion. thank you so much for posting. Not only a rare treat, thrilling, inspiring. It's like a bit of time travel as well.
That was unbelievable! Thank you so much - he was on fire! And so young and fresh - so full of life. Wonderful. I've never seen this footage - priceless record of one of the greatest tenors of the century.

Typical swedish booze drinking song. The tenor does it really good, but he struggles a bit with the high notes at the end. Piece of cake, really.
karakoima 3 years ago
he is one of THE greatest tenors.... so if he struggled it's probably to do with the limits of his natural range over any technical flaw.

no struggle at all, as the video clearly shows. What a range he had. One of the

there were the rest. According to gramps
