  • This performance was so incredibly great that I don`t have the words for it. Flawless control, timbre and range. He makes me proud to be half Swedish.

  • yes this is from one of his movies and is a good recording . I wish his films had sub titles in English since many of his fans don't speak Swedish.

  • What a wonderful treasure this is!

  • Bravo! Magnifico!

  • In my opinion, the greatest tenor ever. And a kind, wonderful, beautiful, warm-hearted human being.

  • Jussi: The Great of the greats

  • Superb singing! It was such a great loss to the musical world when he died so young!

  • Hey! Let s sing and play as long as we are young and alive. That s some sort of a translation. Hard to translate perfect in English. The song is old Swedish Trad. Sung in a Dalarna accent of Swedish.

  • Jussilicious! But I wish this film would come out on DVD, with subtitles. The VHS copy I have is an obvious dupe, that came from something that had been duped about 5,000 times already. Bogus....

  • How was Jussi able to sing? How was Mozart able to write?

  • Im from Norway.I dont fucking care about sports, but i know one thing fore sure and thats Sweden are light years above us when it comes to music and film.

  • @steinsteel Except for the fact that it was a Norwegian who who made by far the most beautiful music by any scandinavian. Or maybe the most beautiful by any man. Jussi actually sang some of this songs. I don't have to say who, do I?

    Btw, I'm Swedish

  • @jallfjallf I dont know who you are talking about??Who is it?????

  • Quel aigu insolent!

  • No NO No noNOOO HOW was he able to hold that last note so long without straining?? I am going to need to find out the secret of this. His father told him this secret and I must know it.

  • @Imforeverone88 : You ask how? With superb breath control. A roomy chest and broad shoulders that allow optimal lung expansion. Also Jussi had great "topspin"--propulsive resonance. If the tone is produced correctly (which it is here)--in the head and not the throat --a big supply of breath can let you hang onto it for ages. I am a voice teacher, and there is no strain in that high note. If there is a "secret," it is about getting all that breath, and I'd love to know it too!

  • @winobuff Very true. The breath actually leaving his mouth would barely flicker a candle flame. See Prayer of Thanksgiving to see how he breaths.

  • @Imforeverone88 The secret is inside you and all of us already and is so simple yet it is the hardest thing for the mind to comprehend. Most modern teachers can't even grasp the idea. Tone & notes do not belong in a singers mind when singing - only words, expressed truly and naturally. The voice takes second place in a song.

  • @AmhranaiAlainn May I contact you? I would like to know more please.

  • @Imforeverone88 You can subscribe and send me your questions. There really is no secret to singing though. If you are blessed with speech then you have all you need to sing inside you. Listen to the singers on my channel. They are a free lesson in themselves.

  • OMG I think I just soiled myself listening to that...when he went to the high C, I thought he was just gonna hold it for a couple seconds, but NO, he held it for eternity and a day or so...LOL

  • Jussi Björling was naturally gifted! He remains one of the greatest tenor of the 20th Century. The Only Mystery is : Why isn't he as popular as Pavarotti? Anyone in the street knows Pavarotti. With the best effort, Björling may seem for them a Tennis player. Youcef

  • Thanks! This is delightful. He's so young & powerful. That high C takes your breath away!

  • lmao irl, this is so fucking hillarious lol

  • What a high C, my God!

  • This is a jewel.

  • Swedish folklore. A movie from the famous Swedish pilsnermovie era. Nown all over the world.

  • An outstanding talent, but when singing in Swedish he just seems that little bit better! If that is possible!

  • I suppose 1938 was in his prime being still young and powerful, but with the confidence of an early success. And this is a movie, so there might have been som retakes too. But Jussi is wonderful in Swedish, during the WWII he was something of an national Icon, singing patiotic hymns and so.

  • I always loved his voice. But to see him like this and singing in his mother language is such a great opportunity. Thank you very much, Airbuzz!

@to all: any chance that I can see the lyrics in Swedish and/or English somewhere?

  • Hej dunkom så länge vi levom!

Sjungom, dansom, havom roligt varje dag!

  • It's a traditional swedish drinking song with old spellings (all the -om endings for example) and pronounciations. Apparently it's called "Let us be cheerfull" in english. Some words I have no idea how to translate, "dunkom" ("let us be cheerfull" seems kind of far fetched. "have fun"? The word in itself is in a swedish context probably supposed to connote the sound of people dancing on a wodden floor, *dunk dunk dunk*) and "kvintilerom" (could sort of be taken to mean "sound like a bird").

  • "Daler" or "riksdaler" is an old swedish currency. "Hej" litterally means "Hello" but in this context it's more like "Oi!" or "Woha!" or "Yey!" or whatever.

Hello, dunkom as long as we may live!

Sing, dance, have fun every day!

    Hello dunkom and kvintilerom!

Thus my father did and so do I.

For nineteen daler today and twenty daler yesterday.

For nineteen daler today and twenty daler yesterday

and yet I have one riksdaler left.

Hello dunkom as long as we may live

as long as we may live!

  • Thank you so much for your efforts!:-) I'm so happy with your explanations.

Riksdaler that's funny, cause here in the Netherlands we once had a Rijksdaalder.

It's great that you took the time.

  • When I hear Dutch, I cannot understand much. But I can read a lot of it. A lot of words are more close in Dutch and Swedish than compared with English and German. Obviously the Vikings made little trips to a lot of shores...

  • I think the Hanseatic league spoke a kind of german that sounded more like dutch than high german. And since big cities in Sweden was under heavy influence from the Hanseatic league, it's probably the Swedish language that has been changed towards the dutch language. I'm not an expert so I might be wrong.

  • @Qwurten

Hanseatic leage spoke in Low German or plattyska. Might sound something like dutch for the unexperienced...

  • It doesn't make much sense, but you can rest assured that it doesn't make that much sense in swedish either. There are also at least two more verses to this song that I'm aware of.

  • incredibile

  • ...Jussi, the immortal Swede...what a tenor!

  • WOW! What else is there to say.

Alucinante.

  • Wow. Can this guy sing or what. Pavarotti was right, Bjorling isn't human.

  • @gigie555 Pavarotti said that? Wow- well he's right.

  • The way he just pours out those Bbs and the C is so incredible!

  • And he always loves to hold them for SO long!

  • Yup! 7 seconds on that high C!!!

  • Holy jamoly, I ran to my piano and confirmed what you said here. 7 freekin seconds of a crystaline hi C. He was probably in his 30's in this clip. Amazing, truly amazing. Jussi was in the top 3 of all time. Fair appraisal? Bravo FacePaster

  • He always sang older than he was. He was actually only 26 when the recordings for the film were done in Aug-Nov 1937. This is one of my favorites because it really shows the nature of how he sang so naturally.

  • Gracious me...thank you!

  • Finally I can see Bjorling in motion. thank you so much for posting. Not only a rare treat, thrilling, inspiring. It's like a bit of time travel as well.

  • Wha..what..? Did I say something wrong?

  • That was unbelievable! Thank you so much - he was on fire! And so young and fresh - so full of life. Wonderful. I've never seen this footage - priceless record of one of the greatest tenors of the century.

  • he is one of THE greatest tenors.... so if he struggled it's probably to do with the limits of his natural range over any technical flaw.

  • you idiot. this guy is one of the greatest tenors to ever live. he didn't struggle. he didn't even have to cover the sound. you should be shot for ignorance.

  • Bravo HMW. He struggled with only one thing, as the story goes, the bottle! Vocally,

no struggle at all, as the video clearly shows. What a range he had. One of the

all time greats. My grandaddy used to

speak of 2 tenors. Bjorling and Gigli. And

there were the rest. According to gramps

    who heard them both LIVE.

  • @HMW Bjoerling did cover properly. Which is why he had such a long career, and a glorious sound.

  • @HMW he did cover properly, which is one of the reasons why his sound is so awesome.

  • first jussi bjorling, then abba....sweden is awesome!! thanks sweden!

  • avth76 you gotta love ABBA don't you! Corny brilliance.

  • actually, i do...i think benny and bjorn wrote some very great songs!

  • Hej dunkom!. Jussi Bjorling already kicking asses at 27 years old! Jussi Bjorling the greatest tenor ever, gave here a lesson on how to sing. Thank you airbuzz for posting this jewel.

  • My pleasure gauss2005. Glad you enjoyed!

  • Yes, yes this is so great. And I second gaggOLF.

  • Very impressive

  • and my heroe forever ;)

  • You always be my idol Jussi.

  • GYLEN1234 you are an asshole

  • Actually, gylen is a fan of Bjorling.

  • a agree, there is none like Chirst, but oh man can jussi sing!

  • Christ, there's no one like him.

  • Best toast ever! Try doing that at a bar and see what happens.

  • I'd probably be thrown out - head first.

  • hahahah :)

  • singing a capella

  • Espectacular insuperable, lo maximo ,sin dudas the king of tenor.

  • The first note is a Bb-flat and it ends with a high C

  • Wouldn't be my choice of key

  • Tack dig som har lagt ut den.

  • He was great but did not make others suicidal. This is fine but in the recording the speed goes up near the end throwing him sharp, not his fault, great voice none the less.

  • Who cares???????????????????????

  • Bjorling didn't need accompaniment. The voice was enough. Wonderful!

  • Incredibly great!

  • The king of tenors!

  • I suspect that Jussi's voice made other tenors suicidal.

  • A precious hard-to-get piece!

  • What's all that about then? Why don't we have more acapella?

Bjorling in louder mode but to realise just how great a voice this was you have to hear him sing softly.

That's when the also rans appear!

  • i think the also rans appear here as well

  • Isn't it! Björling was one magnificent singer!

  • Magnificent!
