  • 3.0 CSL couldn't be bothered with such trivial comparisons. It was too busy looking good. ;)

  • Sorry - that should have read 'man-hood'. Slip of the finger

  • If you are comparing your foot-long old man to someone else's that is only six inches, well fair enough. Why then do you go on to edit the film to make out that it was 18 inches vs. 3?!

Like I say, don't trust anything you see on TG as I suspect that it is all as contrived as this was.

I enjoy the old car and drive the E46 CSL every day.

If I hit hard times I know which one of these two would have to go first and it wouldn't be the old car.

  • I'm lucky in that I have both cars 'tested' here (it was my 3.0csl). There is no doubt the new car is miles faster. However, 'nil points' for style by comparison to the old car and they are too different to compare in this simplistic way. Main point of my post was that it was all a lie anyway - the 3.0csl was nowhere near as slow as JC portrayed it and the edited exaggeration was pointless and untrue.

Wouldnt trust anything I see on Top Gear - too much 'poetic licence'

  • I'd MUCH rather drive the CSL. Or, my '74 2002. Both are much much cooler than the M3. And the 2002 has the potential to WHUP the m3.

  • silly.. you could play the 'old vs. new' game all day long and all you'll prove is that old cars are almost always prettier and new cars are almost always faster... and honestly, which would you rather have? i'll take the 3.0csl please, no contest.. or how about a race spec 2002 for half the cost of the M3 that would embarrass it around that track. if you're gonna go light weight get a car that weighs 1800 lbs with over 200 hp...

  • looks like we've got 2 Honda Civic's fans :)

  • @marsgt500 a mercedes? lol

  • 2 people are idiots.

  • most wanted

  • OK, time to set the record straight. This was me driving my own 3.0csl and JC in the M3 CSL (BMW Press Car). Clarkson actually passed me on the 6th lap, but the edited versionshows lap 3. I was livid when I got the DVD! I drive an M3 CSL as a daily driver. It's miles faster than the old car, but as noted by others, speed most definitely not everything.

They messed me about all day, stiffed me on the expenses and then lied just to exaggerate their point. Second and last Clarkson appearance!!

  • @sfh3l Yeah... sure... cool story bro.

  • yeah but the 3.0 does romp the E46 in terms of style points...

  • 50:50 is not perfect for a RWD track car, sorry. An I doubt it is 50:50 in the M3

  • @ringlol Ever been in this car? trust me, it feels 50/50 indeed and having more weight to the rear causes understeer and most people that buy this car are probly going to use it for the road more than the track.

  • @mrzkhan1 You misunderstood. Im not saying theres anything wrong with the weight distribution, rather the opposite. 50:50 is NOT optimal for a track RWD car. More like 60:40(60 going to the rear) like in cars like GT Porsches and F1. It's just that it's banged into peoples heads that 50:50 is perfect because it's "balanced" but guess what, a RWD isn't balanced. Because of lateral G's and limited rear-wheel grip more weight is needed on the real wheels. Sorry for the essay.

  • @ringlol I understand, 60:40 is better i.e. a porshe or rear engine'd car, more weight distrubution to them wheels at the back decreasing wheel spin but also more precision...sometimes, however in some occasions 50:50 can be better dependant on the corners of the race circuit, i use a simulator and an m3 as the car and in corners you get understeer and try correcting it... oversteer and spin, porshe with 4wd is more stable but you do get a bit more understeer compared to the e92 m3

  • @ringlol it is not.

  • @RETRoSPEKTaOfficial it's not what?

  • @ringlol re-read your comment :)

  • @RETRoSPEKTaOfficial I stated alot of things in my comment, but im guessing your'e suggesting that 60:40 is not optimal?

  • @ringlol no :) i was agreeing with you that the M3 is not exactly 50/50 but it is also not 60/40, not exactly

  • 4:32 "Better than any BMW from the past and, judging by the recent styling efforts, better than any from the future as well". Jeremy Clarkson sure knew what he was talking about!

  • @Saugnapf1 .......Guess I'll admire it from afar!

  • how much does a 3.0 CSL go for these days? I NEED TO MAKE IT MINE!!!

  • Right. I'm sure that the CSL was driven just as hard as the E46 for this show.

  • @StanCatt I guess there is a big difference between 200hp in the E9 and 360hp in the E46 no mather if the E9 was pushed hard ;)

  • @Overdrive872 Fair enough -- but I still doubt that the E9 was really romped on here. (Picture the unhappy owner off to the side watching his garage queen get raped on film by Top Gear.) Happy Thanksgiving

  • BMW M3 E46 cabrio is not that good, isn't it?

  • Well, of course you can drive it everyday and on the motorway, by account of personal experience of 100,000 miles since 1999.

The maintenance is a little different though ,of course. Don't expect to pick one that has driven very little in 30 years, consists mostly of 40 year old parts on it and it'll be as reliable as a 3 year old M3 CSL after just an oil and belt change. It takes a little more than that.

  • can I have both pleeeeeeeeease ???

  • I can't afford an original 3litre CSL but can I find a kit car?

  • mmhmm, BMW ABS brakes tht dont cut in to early? try doin an emergency stop with them and they cut in str8 away its a pain in the ass in Kuwait driving My E46 M3

  • "better than the future as well"

    Gud one. E46 for life

  • Well, I know which one I prefer and it's not the one that's likely to be seen doing doughnuts in a Tesco's car park.

  • BMW e46 Coupe. Best BMW ever made. Not too flashy like Mercedes, not trying like Audi. Can park it outside a council estate and it wont draw attention. Can park it in Knightsbridge next to Bentleys and Bugatti's and it wil still hold its own.

Sort of like an Armani suit. Stylish, yet tasteful.

  • @brightlights456X well, i just bought a csl 3 weeks ago and i can tell you that so far 10 people filmed my car when i had stopped on a red light on the street, when parking many people stop by and looking at it. the csl is a beautiful car especially in real, its brutal, massive,

  • @Levente20

    How much did it cost?

    Does it have back seats?

Did it come with a radio?

  • @brightlights456X Over a 3.0? Are you mad? The 3.0 is possibly the classiest BMW ever made. A true classic. I'd park one at an estate and beside ten bentleys, bugattis, e46's, and still have the coolest car there. 3.0 CSL FTW.

  • @Bischlarbo69

....but could you use it everyday without fear of it breaking down on the motorway or something?

  • @brightlights456X in fact, yes. If you had a well taken care of example, i'm confident it would be more reliable than the m3. m3's are not exactly the most reliable cars out there, and the simplicity of the 3.0's design serves it well in terms of reliability.

  • @Bischlarbo69

Are you sure about that? The Bmw e46 coupe is one of the most realible cars out there. Maybe it's just the M3 brach though.

In regards to the 3.0, wont they drink fuel like a fish does water?

  • @brightlights456X Indeed the e46 is reliable enough, but the m3 needs a little more attention. Yes, the 3.0 is a little thirsty, moreso i believe, than even the e46 m3. But it all depends how you drive it i suppose.

  • @Bischlarbo69

So the 3.0 is a car just for sunday drives!? F**k that, I want a car I can drive everyday and thats where the e46/M3 comes in.

  • @brightlights456X By that, i didnt mean a sunday driver, i meant by if you baby the car and drive it how it's supposed to be driven or not. But to each his own i suppose

  • Comment removed

  • The 3.0csl is better looking and will continue to be worth more each day than that crappy new one.

  • @Stevehose while i love the older 3.0 and 3.5 CSLs the new M3CSL is far from cappy. it did a 7:50 around the Nürburgring it beat the Ferrari 360,F430 and the Lamborghini Murcielago!!!it is a highly cappable sports car in its own right. it is one of the only good things bmw has done in the last 10 years.

  • @Stevehose u mad bro?

  • Beauty and the beast!

  • Shut Up Clarkson I love 3.0 CSL

  • @Marsgt500 he loves it too, he owned one. get a clue

  • @Levente20 The new M3 has a lot of electronics. The old mechanical parts only

  • @Levente20 For me it is the power!

  • @Marsgt500 3.0 CLS of course! :)

  • @Marsgt500 it is CSL not CLS ..... Coupé Sport Leichtbau!!! The Ultimate Driving Machine!

  • @tallica4us YES My fault :)

  • There's no comparison, although the CSL badge and the normally aspirated Inline-6. E46 M3 CSL is still a 3-Series, so it is derived from "New Class" E3, 2002tii and 2002 Turbo, an "entry-level" coupé.

Now the "New Six" E9 3.0 CSL was replaced by E24 M635 CSi, so the modern version would be that E63 M6 CSL in BMW M's secret garage. It's just a childish comment, I know, but Top Gear is TV Show made for people who doesn't understand about cars. But it's still nice to watch.

  • @MathewBMW Correction: E3 is also a "New Six".

  • i'd rather take the old 3.0 CSL and slam it on 17x9 BBS RS :D

  • good on you mate to get this vid

  • nice shifting jeremy

  • For me the M3 CSL is one of the best cars ever built.

Thanks for uploading this rare video!

  • The CSL is naturally aspirated genius.

  • Sure it is faster! So what! !!! - its as dull as a nissan sunny compared to its older sexy Great Aunt... 3.0 CSL - Wow what a GILF beauty - stupid comparison - m3csl is just a boring and ugly as fuk super charged 3 series..ugghhh

  • @mwed Supercharged 3-Series? BMW's cars never had supercharger. You must understand a lot, dude! Turbocharged petrol BMW's, besides the new TwinPower Turbo engines, were 1972 "M1" Turbo, 1973 2002 Turbo and E23 745i.
