A great song! I just heard this as an extra on "American Top 40 (original airdate October 31st, 1970) w/Casey Kasem"! The Weavers' version of "Goodnight Irene" charted @ #1 for thirteen consecutive weeks in 1950, five years before the rock & roll era officially began! Pete Seeger's still alive, too! I wonder what all the teenagers of the era who heard this on that ep. of "AT 40" thought about hearing a folk tune on a contemporary rock radio program? Today's teens would call music from 1970 old!
Last Saturday night I got married Me and my wife settled down Now me and my wife are parted I'm gonna take another stroll downtown Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene I'll see you in my dreams Sometimes I live in the country Sometimes I live in town Sometimes I'm feeling happy And sometimes I'm feeling down Refrain Stop ramblin', stop your gamblin' Stop stayin' out late at night Go home to your wife and family Stay there by your fireside Refrain
Me, too - 10/31/50 Halloween & Goodnight, Irene - it even rhymes!

This song is a propos, as I wait for Hurricane Irene. I hope she's calm, and I can tell her goodnight.
