As a 10 year old kid sitting in the movie theater, Gremlins really had some scary moments. The effects were, well...extremely effective lol. Not just for 1984 but for any year. Masterfully handled by director Joe Dante, Gremlins accomplishes what it set out to do. It's an extremely entertaining homage to 1950's sci fi monster flicks. Yet it also manages to balance comedy and suspense in a way that's entirely it's own. Gremlins has earned it's place amongst sci-fi horror's elite films.

When I was 9 this movie simultaniously scared the freaking crap out of me while at the same time being such an awesome movie . . . I was so freaked by the Department Store scene, however, that I didn't watch this again for another five years, and then I didn't find it scary at all, it just became one of my favorite movies. Almost 19 now and I love both of them, but nothing beats the first Gremlins.

@Pitchwife82 In the original script, the mogwai kill and eat the family dog even before they turn into Gremlins. At that point the family locks them in the attic and plans to put them in the sun to kill them the next day. But then they form the pods and turn into Gremlins. They kill the mom when she goes in the attic looking for them. It's actually Billy who then shows up at the house and does the kitchen scene, using a sword, not a knife. He was writing a King Arthur book, not a comic book.
