Knife edge is always up, the hair is extremely abrasive on your edge (due to dirt caught in it). Always cut around the anus and pull it through, splitting the tissue all the way to it.
If it isnt a buck that you are going to mount, you can split the ribcage up to the neck with a knife. Cut the cartilage next to the sternum. Grab the esophagus and pull down, cutting the diaphram and work your way towards the butt.
sorry again, but your ruining the hide and i use a buck knife, it doesnt matter what kind of knife you have, i agree, but i am still wondering why you are piercing the stomach?

it average about 40-75 lbs(all meat de-boned) depending on how particular you are about your processing. I do all my own processing, I've put videos up on that check them out.

Great video, I've seen people do this before but I havent gotten my first deer to actually do it myself. This was really instructional and will definitely help me out. The only problem I have is that you made it look too easy so I'm gonna have high expectations when I put one down haha.

@xcooper23x i think he can handle it. im 16 and trying out my 308 this year. i used it once when i was 14 but it hurt and its alot bigger than a 30-06 i used a 243 savage so im sure he can do it.
I have that same knife and love it. However, I use the saw to split the ribs. I just find it easier to get in there. But you certainly got the job done.

I am no expert hunter, but from everything I have been taught, this is no way to gut a deer. It may be quick, but you made a total mess of it, and I am sure a few more minutes with the organs inside is less harmful to the meat than all of the urine and feces spilled inside the abdomen done this way.
I am new to hunting, and when you say you need to feild dress it quickly, what is the time frame? Can it sit for 30minutes? Or is it a right away thing? Thanks.
@dirtastegood depending on the temperature outside you can have different times the colder say 30degrees you can have an hour to find it. if its 50degrees and up you want to get that deer or big game dressed as soon as possible literally after death.

Man that had to have wreaked horribly! You really should try harder not to pull the digestive organs apart. It would have been better to cut further up and down the deer, splitting the ribcage and pelvis so you can get everything out together. You have to be very careful with all intestines and digestive organs. If you just pull stuff out haphazardly like this your meat will end up tasting like crap (literally).

just approach it from behind and with your weapon loaded if the first shot was not possibly fatal. this works well for deer. just poke their butt cheek, and if its alive it will run straight away from you!

i always cut the throat tube , then score the but bone , and open the chest cavity up , then with 1 yank you take the throat tube , and pull right out she all comes ., so you still got some cleaning to do .
Ive been doing this since I was 10, real quick, this guy did ok, but one thing he didnt do was cut the throat and pull the esophogus from the bottom of the throat, while slicing away at the diaphram, then pulling the remainder out the ass, if you are new at this, remember one thing, you dont have to tie the piss tube but if you lay the deer on a hill head up ass down, if you cut the piss tube you shouldnt spill it on the meat, always gut your deer on a hill ass down head up

Cool video! When I was a kid in Greece I saw my grandpa hang the sheep by its back legs on a tree and then gut it like you did. I always wanted to learn how to do this, but I never got the chance, I only was allowed to watch.
This was helpful. I really appreciate how you emphasized the importance of dressing a deer quickly to save the meat. I see way to many hunting shows on T.V. Where they let deer sit out all night in warm weather to find it in the morning. Everyone know full well that the meat will have spoiled by then. It does not seem to bother them at all. It seems like all they want is the horns that you cant eat. Great video. I liked it a lot!!

@heysmithy i totally agree with that, he said that he didn't want to open it up as much because it'll expose more of the environment to it, but all you do when you get back to camp is just rinse it off and it'll be all clean and dandy

wow awesome.
i just bought a rifle and wanna try hunting. there's some game reserves in San Diego county, I'll probly start with quail and dove to get the hang of it. Does that sound like a good place to start?

just approach it from behind and with your weapon loaded if the first shot was not possibly fatal. this works well for deer. just poke their butt cheek, and if its alive it will run straight away from you!

i always cut the throat tube , then score the but bone , and open the chest cavity up , then with 1 yank you take the throat tube , and pull right out she all comes ., so you still got some cleaning to do .

Ive been doing this since I was 10, real quick, this guy did ok, but one thing he didnt do was cut the throat and pull the esophogus from the bottom of the throat, while slicing away at the diaphram, then pulling the remainder out the ass, if you are new at this, remember one thing, you dont have to tie the piss tube but if you lay the deer on a hill head up ass down, if you cut the piss tube you shouldnt spill it on the meat, always gut your deer on a hill ass down head up

The only thing that confuses me is that you are dressing a doe. As far as I know, in California, it is illegal to shoot does.

yup! exactly, in this specific area there is a den of coyotes, but the deer and deer population don't seem fazed by them.

Cool video! When I was a kid in Greece I saw my grandpa hang the sheep by its back legs on a tree and then gut it like you did. I always wanted to learn how to do this, but I never got the chance, I only was allowed to watch.

This was helpful. I really appreciate how you emphasized the importance of dressing a deer quickly to save the meat. I see way to many hunting shows on T.V. Where they let deer sit out all night in warm weather to find it in the morning. Everyone know full well that the meat will have spoiled by then. It does not seem to bother them at all. It seems like all they want is the horns that you cant eat. Great video. I liked it a lot!!
