  • @kpric03 Hello! I'm Michelle, I work with Darrel at the 5-Pencil Method! I'll be sure to pass along your suggestions to him! Thanks for you input! -Michelle

  • :D

  • I liked the video. Do you teach drawing at a school?

  • @TheKemeny17 Hi! I'm Michelle and I work with Darrel at the 5-Pencil Method. Darrel has actually never taught drawing in a school setting. Most of Darrel's career has been as an illustrator. A few years ago he started teaching classes in Boise, but he's no longer doing that, he's instead decided to focus on making these YouTube videos and DVDs-for students around the world to watch! Glad you're enjoying the tutorials! Thanks! -Michelle

  • very nice vid. very calm voice

  • You are an amazing teacher Really thanks so much I Am 13 years old and I love portraits :) and u really helped thanks so so much

  • you are amazing at drawing

  • You remind me of Gil Grissom, from CSI... The way you speach, the look in your eyes... You're the Drawing CSI! The Sketch Artist from Las Vegas Crime Lab! Appart of the bad joke, you are right about the edge line... It's the shading that gives the impression of "edge", not a dark line. Tricky part is to get good on the shading stuff... And I confess that I stink at it... Wish I could buy the tallent, not just the supplies...

  • thank darrel! youre cute too =)

    wow..

  • this is true, what he said that drawing is like a recipe, I never used to draw portraits at my school, but now in College we're drawing real life drawings by practice every week, and I feel like I'm getting better and better :)

  • wow, this video is crystal clear!

  • i like the way he talks, its so clear to understand, good accent, i am not a racist but he has a good accent

  • What shades of pencils do you use?

  • Please come with your other videos quick. I love how you explain things.

  • would I start with the face first or the hair first when starting or is it a mix of going back and forth?

  • In this technique the hair is the last thing that is added in.

For portraits, we start with a faint outline and build some light shading throughout, starting with the eyes.

Stay tuned for some more tutorials that will go into more depth on the process.

  • Once again mister Darrel I learned wonderful things from your teaching and thank you,can you please make a video about how to draw hands.

    I would appreciated allot :)

  • Wuhuuu i'm totally ready to learn some more.. ;) .. thanks for making these videos.. :D ..

  • hey sweet videos! Could we possible see some more? Maybe some about measuring for a portrait?

  • Thank you.

A number of techniques for laying a portrait out on the paper will be coming in future videos. Stay tuned!
