Hong Kong was loaned out to the British by the Chinese (for some reason, don't know why). It's an island (well at least that's how it looked from Google Maps) on the south-east coast of China. Officially it was returned to China in the late 90s, though unofficially, well I get the feeling there's a bit more to it.
