  • Finally, a nice Irish video without the Green vs Orange bullshit! Protestant or Catholic we're all the same!

  • happy new year every one :'(

  • best song respect!!!!

  • 1min 20secs "Talking all the day, with true friends that try to make you stay..." The picture here is of Johnny Halloran on the Box with Lizzy on the Fiddle, taken in Tí Coilí Bar, Galway.

  • Beautiful Song. So refreshing to see that most of the posts are not about religious hatred and more about the fact that this is one of the best celtic singers ever. His ability to paint beautiful landscapes with his words and fantastic guitar playing knows no ends.

  • had the pleasure of meeting this guy superb

  • great song he does a song called Ireland Her Own and can't find it on youtube I hope someone can help?

  • Thanks for posting. I think his version is the best I've ever heard. So much more soul, longing, poignancy than Mary Black's... just sayin...

  • I just bought 3 albums of Dick Caughan for my Scottish husband's Birthday,

to be posted to NZ where we live now....

I can't wait for them to arrive...:-)

  • Only started listening to Dick Gaughan's music recently...does he still tour? I'm an Irish student living in Glasgow, songs like this make me miss home!

  • @solus881

Pal, I moved to Glasgow to hear DG! Yes he plays, and he never disapoints!

Where are you & do you speak any Gaelic? ( If so I could recommend the best Gaidhlig pubs!)

  • I am watching and listening to this fine song and its visuals and I am touched and moved by both working so well together. I am Scots-Irish and am glad and proud to experience this post. Blessings to you from the U.S. :{ ) Brian

  • I am from Russia, but I like this song!

  • If all I ever had was a 'Handful of Earth' then this would had made it worthwhile. Regards from NZ.

  • Thanks Dickie for all your musical poetry, strong heart and mind, may you be wreathed in blessings <3 love Bb

  • What a beautiful song and text - so poetic - so full of love - Dick Gaughan is sure one of the best singer/songwriters that have ever lived - I love this song and the pure beauty always brings tears in my eyes

  • Such an absolutely beautiful song by a brilliant musician, this song touches the deepest depths of my soul, truly beautiful an I can't wait to come home. It also warms my heart to see everyones comments so peaceful rather then the usual YouTube political bickering. God bless Ireland and God bless you all. Rath de Ort.

  • very good, but Mary Black's version is the best

  • Got to be one of the best folksingers, and this is one of the best songs. Thanks for your great voice and unique guitar playing.

  • Ah bueatiful hes in control start to finish!!

  • I am french and originally from Morocco and salsa teacher!!...but this song is one of my favourite.

I don't know why I love celtic music but this one touch my heart.

I herd it many years ago on the beautifull album "Heart of gaels".

  • Scots are Irish immigrants who came over to the mainland and amalgamated with the Picts! We are all one people with one origin and absolutely brilliant music!

  • the more i hear this man, the more i admire him ~

  • This song really stirs the Celtic blood like no other. God Bless Ireland, Scotland a\nd Wales!

  • His voice is so good it's unbelievable..

  • Being a true Luke Kelly fan, I ought to like his version better than this one - but they are both absolutely beautiful - and in fact Dick Gaughan has a more traditional way of singing this fantastic song! And I love the guitar in this one!

  • @SAF57

Well Dick is an immigrant Scot, like so many, and his da' was from "Poor" Co. Mayo, so perhaps that may lend something to your understanding of his love of this song! He is singing from the heart! (I don't think he knows any other way!)

  • totally brilliant.. glad i found this

  • i am Irish

  • Why can't I find "Willie o' Winsbury" on YouTube? One of my OMG life changing tunes.!!!

  • It doesn't ever get any better than this..

Thanks so much.. i want to come back..

Dick, we are all so much in awe and respect for your voice and your powerful words you write, I love especially the Worker's Song.

    Be well and cheers!

    Terry !!

  • God bless Ireland indeed! From your Celtic brothers in Scotland

  • Bless all the true Celts in the world my friend.

  • Simply beautiful. I have never heard of this fella before, and I love his voice. If I close my eyes and listen I can hear the ocean and smell the beautiful green countryside. I will be back to see more!

    Rath Dé ort

    God be with you

  • True poetry. Great song and even better musician. Thanks for the post... Any chance of his cover of "Ruby Tuesday"?

  • A lovely, lovely gift, not just to Ireland, but to all who seek peace and a better world with all that is within them.

Thanks all the way from Richmond, California! I wish my response were in the form of a song as profound as this one!

  • lexinaut, your responce was perfect...

  • The song was actually writ by Phil Colclough and his wife June, an English couple from Staffordshire.

This version is being song by a Scotsman, the Scots accent is very similar to certain parts of Donegal as we migrated to Scotland for hundreds of years from this part of Ireland.

  • He'll be playing in London, Crouch End on Nov 13. Going to see him whoeee!

  • That's tonight then!...Let us know how the concert went helio!

  • He was pretty bloody brilliant - as usual. He played some stuff I'd not heard before - some very biting political comment in his songs (which were still relevant to the credit crunch, Donald Trump trying to buy most of Aberdeenshire and political sell out of the 60s and 70s generation), but also old favourites like Song for Ireland, Westlin Winds and The Diggers as well as some lovely instrumental stuff. The venue only holds about 100 people - so it's quite intimate.

  • Sounds like you had a great evening.

I prefer smaller venue's as well, I remember a pub near Angel Tube station I used to go to in the late 80's early 90's and seeing the likes of Martin Simpson and Dick himself. it was great to be able to talk to them after the show.

  • ...Brings a tear...eh?

  • this is beautiful song!

rest in peace Liam ... we miss you!

  • At 0:12 Scotland :)

Buachaille etive mor, the watcher at Glencoe...

  • See my reply to DonegalRaymie in an earlier comment.

Well spotted by the way siorpaluk!

  • Thanks for the encouragement...I'd love to see where my Sidney's, Kearns' and Lanes came from. From whence the Sidneys became schooner captains along the Connecticut and New York shore, they say. And in several generations was I. Thanks also for the beautiful video. It's been awhile since I've been so inspired and I'm starting to feel alive again!!

    Cheers.

    Lz

  • Dick Gaughan is a master in the "Hand Full of Earth" album. Every song is rich, beautiful, powerful and done with artistic soul. If anyone wonders which one DG album to get is, I'd say this.

    Beautiful video!!!

Thanks so much! One day I'll see Galway as my ancestors did.

    Cheers.

  • If you haven't been to Ireland before, you will love Galway...fantastic County and the City of Galway itself has a great buzz about the place all the time!...Very friendly people down there so they are!

  • Galway city was my favorite city in Ireland. For all the reasons that Lukesummer said and more.

  • J'ai les yeux qui me piquent à chaque fois que j'écoute cette merveille.

    C'est tellement ça l'Irlande!

  • Oui Irlande est magnifique, et c'est la France.

    Merci pour le commentaire.

  • You said Ireland is magnificent and it is France!

  • I was using a little known French dialect called Donegalese!...Ha ha!!!

  • Viele Grüße from isle ruegen (germany)

Dick Gaughan ist einer der besten Interpreten des wunderbaren songs for ireland. Danke, Thanks so much!!!

  • Und ich danke Ihnen für Ihre höfliche Kommentar. Sie sind in der Tat richtig, Dick Gaughan ist die beste Dolmetscher der irischen Liedern.

  • This is a wonderful video. The profound hunger for peace is made vivid and beautiful for a world that needs it. Thanks!

  • i love this!!

  • Gaughan wrote this song, didn't he?

    -jcr

  • Ah!...no

  • This brilliant song written by Phil Coulter. Lyn and I sang this at Sidmouth in 1989 to a packed house and you could have heard a pin drop! Fantastic event and fantastic memory...we used to run The Willow Tree on to it as sort of double song set. I was part of Chequered Roots in those days....

  • Did not know it was a Phil Coulter song, that figures, the other one of his that I love is "The town I loved so well" Check it out!

  • I think that was just a typo on charliehaven's part, this song was actually writ by Phil Colclough and his wife June, an English couple from Staffordshire.

  • Thanks for that. I do appreciate it. What a beautiful song.....made even more so being written by a non native!

  • irish~english...and proud...!

  • And proud you should be...

  • It takes a Scot to sing it soooo Beautifullyl

  • I feel privileged to watch and listen to this again, this time after paying close attention to your:

"Father Daughter Mother Son". A close friend recently passed. He was a giant of my times, I told his partner recently: The past is what we made it. The future is what we make it."

It is a rare treat to share the blue where falcons fly with you and Dick.

  • Beautiful song. Written by an english schoolteacher

  • Homesick now...want a wee dander to Blackhead lighthouse..

  • I´m a Scotsman (like Dick Gaughan) but I must say this song really stirs my Celtic blood.

  • I am french and originally from Morocco and salsa teacher!!...but this song is one of my favourite.

I don't know why I love celtic music but this one touch my heart.

I herd it many years ago on the beautifull album "Heart of gaels".

  • @exiledjacobite1

you beat me to that comment, it really gets me goin. Scotland & Ireland, brother nations.

  • Beautiful video . . . perfect guitar, voice and lyrics.

    Gretsch'n

  • Inimitable Gaughan. Long Live Ireland.

  • Well said my friend.

  • His rendition of this song is absolutely the most beautiful.

  • This has to be the definitive version of this song.. have heard many, but this one never fails to bring tears to my eyes.... even before I left Ireland!

    Up Mayo!

  • I think it is. Gaughan simply does the song better!

  • Hows things with you this weather Raymie?

  • Hi Luke, I'm grand thanks. Do things go well with thee?

Will be off to see our man DG next month. Saw him at the Celtic Connections festival but he was only doing a few songs as part of the Burns' concert. Still great to see him where he belongs, in front of 5000 people at Royal Concert Hall!

Strangely, he was no less comfortable than playing in front of the 90 folk crammed into a wee room when I last saw him!

Looking for ideas for more DG songs put to pics, any suggestions?

  • Actually I do...Dicks peerless cover of "Games people play" by Joe South. I lent my copy of "A Different Kind of Love Song" and never got it back so if you have it I think it would be a great track to put up.

Although not a "folk" song as such, I think Dick really puts a lot of passion into the song...one of his best vocals I think!

  • I do. I will. Good shout! My thanks!

Enough of the 2 word sentences, I agree, it's so completely different it's worth letting people hear his reinterpretation. I think it'll surprise a few folk!

    Anything for a fellow countyman!

  • different approach to lukes but still good

  • Ha, really love this song, living in Scotland now and missing my home. I come from whitehead which is a part of Blackhead....sigh..

  • lovely walk along the Blackhead path round the rocks listenin to the sea crashing on the rocks up the caves i live in Whiteabbey was there just last week went up to the lighthouse !

  • Precioso video. Fabuloso Gaughan.

  • words and music by Phil and June Colclough

on the 1997 album "Spirit of Ireland"

    Gaughan a genius

    thanks for posting

  • A work of art in every way. :-) *****

  • Beautiful pictures, sceneries and song. Thank you for posting.

    Grandma Mary

  • Saw Dick singing this in Perth y'day night, absolutely spell binding.wow

  • Damn it! Didn't know he was playing! What else did he sing?

  • Westlin winds, tom paines bones, its not what youre born with, song about John Muir, song about "big muddy",cant remember names of others.spoke to him at end and told him I was disappointed he didnt do the workers song or the diggers which are my favourites!

  • Beautiful Song with a mesmerising slided show. Favouriting this one.

  • Great song and beautiful images..

  • Thanks John.

  • Beautiful! ... Thank you.

  • Incredible photos and my favorite song of all time ... great job, makes me "homeland" sick.

  • Thanks McDaidUSA...

  • ...........beautiful..........

  • Love Mary Black and Lukes version but this is very very good, beautiful deep tonal folk voice and Scottish as well....brill

  • Well Dick is half Irish and half Highland Gael, so I think he's well placed to do this song justice!

  • I would go as far as to say that he is better placed than most (for the very reason you have stated) to sing this song than most of my fellow countrymen and women. It may be tantamount to heresy to say this but I find Luke Kelly's version pedestrian at best and Mary Blacks version leaves me cold.

  • So you're a heretic with a good ear for songcraft!

I listened to Luke's version and have to agree, his phrasing is poor; like he hasn't given any thought to the lyrics. And there's a tad of "Musak" to Mary's. A bit too easy-listening for me.

But the worst offender is The Fureys. Every folk music cliche is employed without care. I still wake up in cold sweats hearing it!

  • @DonegalRaymie201 Well he didn't have time to be thinking too deeply about the lyrics, he was dead only weeks after recording the song and kept falling asleep while it was being recorded..... no point in trying to compare the respective versions. They're both great so it's really a matter of personal preference. Personally I am hopelessly addicted to Lukes voice so I can't imagine liking anyone elses version of anything better than Luke Kellys!!

  • @tony10396861

Dick himself said that Luke's version of "Freedom Come All Ye",(a song both men recorded), is peerless! And I would have to agree, but Luke's version of this song, is very far from his best work, for the very reasons you mention.

I wouldn't want Luke judged by what turned out to be his Swan Song. On this recording, Dick has my vote for what it's worth.

  • @DonegalRaymie201 He's not as good vocally as when he was younger, I agree, but I still think it's a very special recording. The story of how it was recorded only adds to that. It's one of my favourites

  • It will be a great day when that last verse comes true.

  • Ireland is Beautiful!

    Thanks!

  • Beautiful song, great video, perfect editing!

    Congratulations ...*****

    Greetings

    José Luis, harpist.

  • Those really are some wonderful shots to go with this great song!! Thanks!!*****Duke

  • Luke kelly and Dick Gaughan both sing this song amazingly !

  • True...

  • Stunning images , fantastic version of a song for ireland

  • As much as I like Luke Kelly singing this, there is something special about this rendition. What poetic lyrics!

  • For me, personally, this is being sung by some one who really understands the lyrical content and is expressing a true love of Ireland.

  • First time I saw him it was in Galway, from then on

I just go to see him when ever he is nearby.

And this song will always take me to memory of walking

by sea shore with swans n catamarans in bay of Claddagh.

Some songs n artist like Gaughan, some places they stay in our heart.

    Lovely post!

  • Love this.

  • Delicate and marvellous music!

  • Thanks for posting. This is a wonderful randition of this song. Dick has a wonderful warm voice and the guitar is beautiful. The pics are truly beautiful as well. Great job!!!!!!

at 3:24 (4:34)you gave us more

I believe that Henry Glassie describes Ireland well...especially as to 3:24

  • Never thought I would find a version of this song to equal Luke Kelly....

I'm off to buy some Dick Gaughan albums

  • This song is from Dick's album

    "Handful of Earth" it includes brilliant renditions of Craigie Hill, Lough Erne;

First Kiss At Parting and Erin Go Bragh!

    It is well worth getting.

    Thanks for the comment.

  • Could not believe my luck today. I headed in to town (Dublin) today and got a copy of Kist O'Gold in a second hand music shop

  • Sure now, that was fate! Enjoy, and if ever you get the chance, go see him live! He's the only true Troubadour I've ever heard! Just captivates an audience with his songcraft! If you aren't blown away by how a true artist can capture you, i'll pay your ticket! Sure, I moved to Scotland to see him perform more!

  • I just bought it from Amazon for 10- US

  • thanks for that info. Am getting it tomorrow!!

  • in min 1:54 you can see a cloud that apears to be a blessing hand, God bless Ireland.

  • one of the most beautiful i ever hear. amazing

  • Great song & singer. I love the photos too.

  • Nice! Straight into my Ireland Playlist. Nice shots of Ben Bulben, too. Great song and pics. Reminds me of standing on Achill Island and looking out to sea.

  • Beautiful pics and song! Just that first pic though, it's "Buachilletive Mhor" in Glencoe isn't it? I've climbed it in winter so I think I recognise it!

  • Well spotted!,Buachaille Etive Mòr (the 'Great Herdsman of Etive').

I had planed to put pictures of Scotland,Ireland and England in this little video, to celebrate the fact that it was writ by an Englishman and sung by a Scotsman. But it would have got cluttered, so I decided not to.

    Again!, well spotted!

  • Thankyou, we do try! It looks a lot better in your pic than when I tried climbing it!

  • Great photos, lovely soundtrack.

  • Nice video man. Erin go Breagh.

  • Grand. I quite enjoy the guitar tone... Martins simply beautiful. Thanks for posting.
