Squirrelbait predates Nirvana and The Replacements by several years. They were contemporaries of Husker Du and briefly toured with them. Part of their "magic" is that they were mostly under 18 when their first album hit and couldn't tour. They were the real thing - teenagers who sang about what mattered to them in a very dark and aggressive way. They broke up before any of them were 21 - which is probably a good thing. Listen to how they go in to the chorus and you'll see so many bands to come.
@stoneaxeprod You might wanta check your dates on that one, buddy. The Replacements formed in '79 (I'm pretty sure, anyway) and their materpiece of an album, Let it Be, came out in '84--a whole year before Squirrel Bait even released their first LP.
@FuttBucker667 yep... not sure if SB was touring before this, but that would have made them awfully young. if we're going to talk about age and whatnot, the replacements were young enough to be in highschool, and in tommy's case, middle school, at the peak of their popularity for the most part... maybe im just biased because i love the replacements more than anything. but squirrel bait has always been awesome to me too!!
Haha, shiat, I didn't look at any comments before I mentioned the Dave thing, I'm obviously not the first, heh. He is real cool and down to earth too, saw him in Japan in the mid-late 90's and everyone was quiet and it was a small venue. Hard to explain but a surreal way to see a concert.
I get the feeling alot of people commenting are like me, read the RS thing w/Dave Grohl and had to check it out. God bless you tube, this is unreal good music.
Squirrel Bait was the tiny seed that germinated into post-punk greatness. (The video's "family tree" demonstrates that fact.) Slint, Bitch Magnet, etc all spawned from SB. Eventually those seeds landed in Seattle, where they cross-pollinated with the likes of Green River, Mudhoney, et al. A few "begats" later...Nirvana.
thanx to the uploader for this great song and clip. i got the vinyl of this, but no lyrics sheet. can't find anywhere on net. can anyone help? when i first head this song I used to sing "take it away" but after reading somewhere I believe it may be "ticking away". no really important, just curious...
This is the best song ever made. Chops. Power. Conviction. Total abandon when it counts..... only in America....to think that they were only in high school when they made this...well, more "punk" was to come in the "90's", but man, this is the real spuzz.....soooo freakin' great.....I Love this band....
One of the all-time GREAT songs from this band, perhaps the best. This was also one of the best compilations of the day, Wailing Ultimate, a Homestead release that featured Big Black, Volcano Suns, Naked Raygun, Dinosaur, Jr, Death of Samantha, Phantom Tollbooth, and Big Dipper, among others. In my view, it's a must have if wanting a taste of the best of Homestead in this era.
@MALARAZZA the first time I heard NIrvana was that he was doing a Peter Searcy rippoff. In the end I was only a little bit right, Nirvana rockd. But regardless, S>B> will always mean way more to me.
In December of '85 my friend (a friend of Daivd Grubbs) and I went to Louisville to see Squirrel Bait in concert. We spent the day with the band members (nice guys), saw the show, and then crashed at Grubbs' house. Also, I recall the concert was dedicated to D. Boon of the Minutemen who died the previous day. That was sad--the Minutemen were one of those bands that were respected and loved by just about everyone who heard their music...not unlike the Bait come to think of it.
Definitely NOT pop punk. If anything No-Wave or Emo.
