  • I must say that I misjudged this as not being a solo. What hehas done in some places is establish a secondary repeated bass line for himself in real time electronically that then repeats itself every measure, to which he provides a lead accompianment. Remarkable and incredible.

  • He must finish jerking off in 1.3 secs xD

  • anyone bitching about this should pick up the bloody bass guitar and try getting down ANY tecnique, whether it be slapping, popping, strumming, harmonics - fill the list. Once you get THOSE down, come back here. Then you try what Wooten's doing. You'll die, humbled.

  • Jeez,it's like hearing bass chords for the 1st time...or bass, for that matter....

  • wooten plays with no strings in this video. thats how great he is.

  • Wooten you are the king of 4 strings, pure inspiration!

  • 1:09 sounds almost like a song from Spyro the Dragon.

  • cool, but it doesn't sound like bass...

  • nevermind u r good wow ur amazing =1

  • u r a horible bass player

  • @B3efstew22 you like bieber.

  • 3.47 to 4.00 wtf..this is at the point where you have to surpass being a master bass player and just be a musical god..

  • You know when you see dislikes on something like this, its just a few jealous wanna-bes who wish they could play like him.

  • i'm so impressed how he can be such a heavy musician and still get in this mindframe to just be goofy and get creative. you know somebody is going to transcribe this whole thing with atonal slap and all LOL. i really like to hear him play a normal single line solo with a band. and of course his groove is beyond nice.

  • vic is the best there is the best there was and the best there will ever be!

  • @BUILDERPOWER He is one of the gratest, but the best ever...Jacko Pastorious

  • i'm sure he faps a lot

  • CHECK MY "THE LESSON" COVER :) watch?v=roJ869EJZOQ

  • Is it ' The Lesson'??

  • with hand like this...i'd prefer to be single

  • he rules period!

  • victor wooten i heard about you you are a good bass player the best .

  • @juniusrichards There is no best, Victor Wooten is fucking insane but so is Jeff Hughell, (the late) Jaco Pastorius, Charles Mingus, and many others.

  • I once tried to play like victor. Now I have a stump where my right hand used to be.

  • Victor takes music to a spiritual level. Read his book "the music lesson." Phenomenal piece of literature that will have you looking at music the way he does- in a spiritual, tangible way. It will change your life, and improve your understanding of not just playing, but music itself.

  • Victor must go through strings at the same rate that a person with a cold goes through tissues.

  • what is the black thing he moves around the frets of the guitar and what does it do? I've seen that on so many bass videos but what is it?

  • @wes101075 What, a capo?

  • @wes101075 that's to stop the strings ringing

  • @wes101075 - for this particular Question it is a hair tie - it stops overtones when you are tapping/slapping ect... anything that you want to stop the strings from completely ringing out.

    Hope this helps

  • @wes101075 his hand...duh haha

  • i think my mind just blew

  • MONSTER!!

  • who doesn't wanna have some private classes with bass-god himself?

  • man... i jus wish i could ENJOY playing an instrument as much as him!!!! sex must be boring for him compared to this...

  • Got to see him Live and even had the privilege to shake the Master's hand.

  • thats not a hand, thats a weapon of mass destruction.

  • i will never be half that good in my lifetime

  • @EdBuGMEnRRB

    only cause you say so

  • im a guitarrist but with this guy makes me want to play bass

    amazing

  • what a talent... i always thought the best bass is alphonso johnson but i was wrong damned wrong

  • mother of God O____O

  • i mean, shit, he's fucking amazing. but the only bad thing about that is that he knows he is....i saw him and all his brothers at the variety playhouse in atlanta and he's so damn arrogant. there's no need for that shit.

  • @matt46and2 musical arrogance is the nature of the beast. it sucks that we must endure such seemingly inane reactions to fans, but put yourself in his place...

  • @matt46and2 put yourself in his shoes, arrogance is the nature of the beast...

  • @knelledkismet yes, i agree...only partially, however. The exception to that I am thinking of would be Danny Carey. He is an absolute beast, but he is the most humble and down-to-earth guy. and he's a lot more famous than victor wooten. I guess he's the exception that proves the rule.

  • @matt46and2 FUCK YEA TOOL FOREVER

  • @claudioOMG Yes, indeed sir claudio...I will forever be a passionate fan of Tool, and am glad you feel the same. Don't know about you, but right now I am plagued with anticipation for the release of their next album. I have no idea what to expect.

  • @matt46and2 DUDE I CANT FUCKING WAIT WHEN IS IT COMING!!!

  • @claudioOMG I would make a conservative estimate of some time in the summer-fall of 2011...spring if we're lucky. They're in the writing stages, which takes (based on their previous albums) around 6 months, arrange exactly what they are going to record, and then recording itself takes a good while. They are very specific about the tones and overall sound of each song. It's been almost 5 years since 10,000 Days came out, so I am more than ready for the next era in their progressive saga.

  • @claudioOMG cool i want them to take as much time on it i dont want their songs to be shitty

  • @knelledkismet actually, i didnt mean to come opp as disagreeable. i met louden wairight one time, and he was arrogant, i met poppa john phillips, super nice guy. ive been a solo musician for 20+ years for exactly the reason, that you meet alot of talented/ and pretentious egos, and you do meet solid charcters also. thanks for reminding me

  • @knelledkismet actually, i didnt mean to come opp as disagreeable. i met louden wairight one time, and he was arrogant, i met poppa john phillips, super nice guy. ive been a solo musician for 20+ years for exactly the reason, that you meet alot of talented/ and sometimes pretentious egos, and it becomes unbearable at times. you do meet solid charcters also. thanks for reminding me. check out a kid named eric mongrain, old friend/ big talent

  • And the best part is, Ive seen him at my local guitar center =D

  • Victor es muy grande pero no tiene que gustar a todo el mundo,A MI ME VA MAS CHARLES MINGUS,,carles benavent, stanley clarke, jaco son ese nivel mas o menos,

  • he is much better than pastorius more technique!!!

  • . . .and study stanley clarke

  • Anyone ever hear of Larry Graham? HE invented slap. Victor is a master musician because LIKE JACO. . . he is able to combine things he has heard and expound upon them. I am almost degrading myself by joining in this conversation, however, I felt the need to point this out: WE all as musicians are people who do what someone else before us has already done! There is a cave dweller who should receive all the credit.

  • Godfather of BASS!!!

  • It all has to do with the way you understand your instrument, and the way you can redirect the flow of your soul and emotions onto the fret board.

  • He isnt A bassist, he is THE bassist ^^

  • how can you possibly say anything negative about this performance? Appreciate greatness when you see it, as it is rare.

  • soloing is improv and soul which most here with the negative comments dont have. It is not technique in the purest since. it is a blend of technique and feel. If it came off the strings it is music. Alot of people say heavy metal is not music and is noise. because it is so distorted and sounds noisy, but they are really playing cords and scales ie... music. Jazz is the expression of improv and feel which takes a soul connection. That's what vic is about... get some soul and try it one day.

  • il utilise de trés simple ligne de basse mais il ajoute plein de couleur et surtout du rythme , c'est monsieur groove man :) jadore son jeu et je m'en inspire .

  • THEIRS NO EARTHLY WAY HE CAN SLAP THAT FAST!!

  • dont get me wrong , i love wooten , but sometimes he only makes weird noises and it just looks flashy , personaly i think that this one is one of his most boring solos. but the final part kicked ass, i have seen more musical stuff of him . I love his techinque (double thumb) but sometimes is too much.

  • If Victor isn't any good, then you make a video response if you playing this perfectly.

  • cara vc é demais

  • People say the dumbest shit on Youtube.

  • Jaco played fretless, totally different, and Jaco didn't play 5 or 6 string basses which are more like guitar, and he didn't rip off Eddie Van Halen techniques.

  • @flarbton its not ripping off >_> Thats like saying Stravinsky ripped of Debussy in breaking from traditional tonal harmony. Plus Eddie was not the first to utilize the tapping in playing a string instrument. And even if he was, it would be foolish to ignore an entire playing technique because somebody else used it. Are you gonna accuse him of being a rip off because he uses his hands to play bass instead of being an original and using his feet or his elbows?

  • Grow up kids please... if you all dare and move on to try and search for your own if you will... This Jaco fixation is unfortunately a kind of fantasy. GO ahead and do your research and look back beyond Jaco. Briliant players merely pay homage to him because of what he did in the PAST and they simply move on. Jaco absolutely was not the first and he absolutely is not the LAST!!! Please try to wake up (really)

  • HAHA I love this guy! Was victor beginning giant steps at one point in his taping 6:49. What a blessing Vic is.

  • I had to say it again, he's amazing and its his time like no other bass player had done during their time.

There are alot of bass players out there who are right where they are in the bass scene (better or not) because they were classically trained in other instruments. More specifically bass players that started playing guitar first. Victor was always a bassist so he is more genuine as "the bass player" than the rest.

  • You can't compare Victor to Jaco because Jaco started it all. He could not learn something from someone, he made it all up himself. These things were already made up when Victor was growing so he could build on what was already built and build further. Jaco did not invent slap or double-thumb but many of the techniques of Jaco is the reason why Victor, Marcus, Tony, etc. even plays as they do. I love Wooten aswell! :)

  • @SalvationHasCome Completely wrong!!!! Go back beyond Mr. Jaco and research deeper if you dare... perhaps you may may have a different perspective. Sorry to... no I am not to rain on all of you peoples parades of this narrow view of Jaco, he absolutely did not paved the way or do it first. Great players of the day pay homage to him because of what he did back then period. They move on in life and not fixate on what some one did or did not do in the past!!!

  • there really is no way to judge who the best anything is. true, victor is incredible at what he does, i would give anything to be able to play like that, but that doesn't mean he is better or worse than anyone, but he is definitely one of the best

  • Fast but not really that musical.

  • @DrLight9

    Musical? Victor Wooten is musical!

  • @LinkBulletBill he is.

  • green...

he played in a construction site?

  • victor you should jam with hiromi

  • @kmurphy1527 yes he should!!

  • Music is Art!!!Not a Competition!!!I as a Bassist just want to be the best I can be!Guys often compare me to other players.I tell them everyone is different and what they bring to the instrument is just as important as Victor,Stanley,Jaco,Larry,Marcus,Mark,etc.,etc.,etc,.

  • Ladies and gentlemen..... Warren Sapp on drums!

  • @patswon2 ahah loved it

  • curious flap/thap solo

  • whats that piece at the end? i love it very spanish sounding. has he actually done this as a song? i want to learn it

  • he is the best

  • i dont dont like his music that he plays but i still think he is one of the best bassist's my favourite is cliff burton but thats only because i like his music more but victor has more skill

  • Not all Victor's music is for mere mortals. Some like this solo is for the spirits. u can just feel it. if you open ur eyes well u can see the good spirits dancing. hes not a musician he is music

  • @aaronenos if you close your eyes you can feel everything in the world all summed upon a stringed instrument

  • is that a capo?

  • This is some wicked shit pardon my french...

  • i think at 0:32 my fingers would fall off lol

  • LOL!

  • His name is Victor! And he knows what he's talking about! Peace

  • and just cuz he comes out on top, dont mean he's leavin us out!

  • thank you so much for posting this.

  • one of the worst solos I have heard of wooten!!!! He can play better!

  • in my opinion wooten is the best bass player alive

    at the moment

  • to carehuea....thats one of the best comments ive ever seen on youtube lol. and hes soo retardidly awesome! some shit victor plays i cant even understand but i still appreciat cuz i trust it makes sense in his eyes

  • It seems that ''A night in Tunisia'' is his favorite jazz song :D..Indeed it's so groovy!

  • Hey buddy no disrespect but he doesn "A night in Tunisia" in this...He wrote this its called The Lesson..

  • @grownnbass I mean the theme between 0:13-0:40...no disrespect to :)

  • @Carehuea Agree!!!!!!!!!!!!! you speak the truth my friend!!! besides this is one of the worst solos of wooten...

  • @Carehuea who made u bass guitar police?. huh? u talk lyk victor wooten cannot play smooth jazz or whatever cheezy kenny G music u r talking about. this is something extra he does dat others cant do. hence his legend status. now i ope u get a clearer picture. why r u even here watchn him? huh? answer me now

  • @aaronenos LEARN HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH YOU DIRTY PEICE OF TRASH........victor is the most talented by far and but he is not the best by far

  • @Carehuea agreed that awesome technique doesn't mean that one is the best in the world. But I, as a lot of other people, do believe that he is the best in the world. He just happens to have great technique as well.

  • @Carehuea: the thing with wooten is that his technique AND his "feeling" (his translation from feelings and thoughts to music) are better than those of any other bassist in the world.

hope u understood what i tried to say (my music language is better than my english ;) (my 1. language is unfortunately better than the music one ...))

  • @Carehuea yeah, you can know technique and not ahve skill

  • @Carehuea five bucks this guy has a pinner dick.... and a good point

  • Yes Victor is a great musician and an unbelievable bassist but please, do me a favour and don't knock Jaco. He could say more with a simple phrase than most of today's slap wizards can with a flurry of notes, and if you can't see that then you don't get it - you don't get the beauty of music.

He and Stanley following on the footsteps of Larry, Bootsy as well as all those great double bassists, really opened the doors for all of us.

Technique is a means to an end, not an end onto itself...

  • that was some UNGODLY STRUMMING starting at 0:25. and the rest of the solo was just as good too!

  • in an interview, vic said that he learned techniques from his brothers. he learned to strum from his brother that played guitar

  • Vic + Derico ... Damn!.....

  • Victor is a GOD bassist.......technically he is superior to Jaco or any other bassist.....he is complete in all kinds and aspects of music......trully a legend

  • He's not very heavy, ever. But he has a very complete scope of feeling in his voice, much moreso than anyone else could ever hope for.

  • i never agreed about vic is superior to jaco or something like that. mind you, no musicians are better than others. they're good with their own things.

is marcus better than vic? no. is vic better than marcus? no. i'm a bass player and i have them both as my influences, they're totally different and they both sound fantastic.

  • @victorartagao So Bro, John Entwistle is by far the greatest bassist ever...

Not saying Mr. Wooten isn't good, he's get... But Entwistle is the greatest best player who ever lived!

    R.I.P. Ox.

  • @musoshi

    The Ox played rock...

    Victor plays Jazz Fusion...

    Get real!

  • @victorartagao agreed

  • @victorartagao Jaco is a completely different kind of monster, what a stupid comparison....

  • jesus... fricking kill my dream of being a good bassist while you're at it victor...

  • @RebelCaptMB Do you think he got to be like this by magic? He practiced and shit, its what makes a good musician. Videos like this inspire me to continue playing, not give up or "kill my dream"

  • he is so fucking over the top -.-

Can somebody compare to him??? i mean technically??? or somehow?? i don't know....

  • Bill Dickens, purely from a "holy shit" technical standpoint is on the level. Wooten himself has said Dickens is the most ridiculously over the top bassist out there. I remember reading something Vic wrote about the first time him and his bro saw/heard Bill and they couldn't stop laughing at how insane he was. I saw Bill live about 10 years ago, and it warped my fragile little mind.

  • woah I'm the exact 94000th viewer

  • whoa thats not that cool lol

  • P.I.M.P

  • wow a pastorius knock off

  • Don't flatter pastorius :)

  • How is this anything like Jaco?

  • loop pedal and "dissonant notes" and on other videos he plays jacos walking techniques

  • Jaco wasn't the first to use any of those things. And there's a difference between influence and straight up COPYING someone. Vic is definitely influenced by Jaco, but he's not copying him.

  • Agreed. I hate it when people say that Vic wouldn't be anywhere without Jaco.

  • wow... everyone who's inspired by jaco is a pastorius knock off then. fuck u

  • I believe that if Liszt would have composed on bass, it would have been something like this. Amazing. I can't wait to see this guy in person.

  • Don't flatter Liszt :)

  • wooohhhoooo!!! The king!

  • I play 5 years, but I'm not even close that level or any other than these kind of guys..

  • a lot of his notes are out of time or disonant. x_x

  • i like a lot victor wooten, i think his best work is on bela fleck and flektones.

  • I love this video

definitely the darker side of his yin-yang coming through here. kind of a less common thing for this musician

  • This video pretty much says:

"I'm Victor Wooten, I'm intense as fuck and better at the bass than you could ever hope to be"

  • what it's really saying is:

pick up your bass so you can speak to me

  • lmao .

  • If you knew anything about Victor Wooten you would know he is nowhere near slef centered.

  • Haha I know, I was just saying how a video like this makes me really appreciate how long he's been doing this. I've only been playing for 6 years, but the knowledge that this guy has amassed in the 40 or so he's been playing is incredible.

That, and he's intense as FUCK

  • it does sound intense!

i sometimes wonder if he's intense, or if he's reached such a state of calm it blows my mind!

  • Yeah hes not self-centered either.

  • minute 3:45 -3:55 owns

    also4:20

best 9:52 minutes wasted of my life

  • 420 always owns ;) haha

  • yeah its fuckin cool...doesnt matter who is better than him, the fact that he's just awsome wont change.

  • O mais engraçado é que ele parece o Ronaldinho Gaúcho heheh...

  • Yeah, I agree with you my Brazilian brother. He is like the Ronaldinho of the bass guitar world. He not only looks just like him, but he has the same "tricks."

  • holeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  • you forgot to add the "T" at the end of all that bro lol no worries though, we all know what you meant...

  • i wonder if he was pissed when he broke the wing of the yingyang on his bass

  • ele é o melhor baixista do mundo

  • just a quick question... what effects does he have on his bass because he gets a very clear sound that i cant recreate ....victor is the bestest

  • treble i think

  • its his tenor bass tuned higher than e a d g

  • I dont think he uses effects. His bass is often in piccolo bass tuning wich is A-D-G-C .And of course the bass and amp are having an effect in the case too.

  • a picco bass is tuned E-A-D-G (an octave higher than a standard tuned bass) and a tenor bass is tuned A-D-G-C.

  • Oh yeah you are right! sorry my mistake.

  • So? It's opinion dude. Your favorite is YOUR favorite. I wouldn't let some magazine tell me my favorite wasn't my favorite. Think for yourself.

  • John Entwistle was voted bassist of the millenium so he must of been many other bassists favorite along with winning polls for over 5 decades, Cheers

  • So? That doesn't make him the "best" at anything. Just means lots of people like him. Lots of people like Vic Woots too. He was the only bassist ever to be Bassplayer Magazine's bass player of the year three times. Does that make him better? Nope. Once again, think for yourself. Cheers right back at ya.
