  • Matlock changed music. His songwriting and bass talent, combined with Rotten's ferocious voice and lyrics made the Pistols. Also he is rather humble about it all! A gentleman!

  • used to have this on red vinyl, happy days

  • Excellent!

  • A legendary Glasgow Rangers fan. is Midge

  • @Taggy1690

    sure?

  • @GriefTourist 100%

  • Yikes about a year later Midge Ure went and joined Ultravox..........another great band.

  • Glen went from one the best bands on earth (Sex Pistols) to this? Man, that is a long fall.

This is soft-rock crapola. The Bay City Rollers meets Debbie Gibson.

  • @machbaby roight.

  • I downloaded this from Limewire before they were shut down and it is incredible.

  • wow, i remember this song so well , back in the day . fantastic !

  • Brilliant, the lead singer sort of reminded me of the late great Steve Marriot!

  • The people trashing this remind me of what ruined early punk. These macho, thuggy hardcore/street kids who invaded the scene and enforced their limiting notions of what punk should be. Hence, you couldn't be as creative, or "fun" or even artistic as punk originally was without risking the label of "poser". Yet I'll bet these same folks wouldn't label heavy metal wannabes like Discharge, Cro-Mags or The Exploited as posers, lol.

  • @xreddragonx I couldn't agree more

  • The Rich Kids also did a film clip for their song Marching Men. Saw it once on tv in Australia in the late 70s when i was a kid and have never seen it since. Looks like no one on you tube have got it either:(

  • @ManFromMelbourne It's on here.

  • Matlock. Forever the most talented Pistol. If only talent had been valued in that band (over, say "looks"), Sid might still be alive.

  • I love this song

  • Good old Midge Ure again on vocals,

  • omg sounds like GENERATION X! xDD

  • If I remember correctly, McLaren wanted Midge to front the Pistols, but Midge refused when he found Malcolm was more interested in how he looked than how he actually sounded.

  • omg midge looks like david cassidy!!!......

  • omg midge looks like david cassidy!!!

  • yeah this is good. tryin like they are tryin to sound like the valves or the jolt

  • hi, I've been looking for the The Rich Kids song PRECIOUS &can not find it anywhere. If you can get it thatd be awesome

  • "Ghosts Of Princes In Towers",.was a well meant, but flawed affair,it has a few rather good tracks on it though.e.a. 'Hung On You".Ure's jibe to Rotten.

  • glen matlock looks like Jason Schwartzman from Bored to Death

  • It's a shame they only cut one album but apparently the reason for their split was that Ure and the drummer Egan wanted to go down the synthesiser route so any second album would have been very different.

  • Glen is a better singer than John. Fate!

  • after you get finished laughing at the lyrics of this song it's really not bad music. and to think the guy "dancing" up front went on to front one of the best new wave/new romantic bands of the 80's.

  • Sounds a lot like 70s power pop a la Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, and The Records... wonderful <3

  • @promisedeyes Sounds nothing like The Records to these ears. This is more RnR to me.

  • Nice bassline on this./

  • hahahahahaha i like sex pistols much more

  • RIP Steve New

  • Colin Sharp (The Durutti Column), Larry Cassidy (Section 25), Rowland S. Howard (The Birthday Party), Malcolm McLaren, and, now, Steve New/Stella Nova (Rich Kids)...a New Wave band is forming in heaven since late 2009

  • R.I.P. Steve New.

  • RIP Steve New

  • R I P , Steve

  • Farewell, guitarist Steve New, RIP ... Read why the Rich Kids were the "missing link" between 70s and 80s pop at shapersofthe80s dotcom

  • Midge Ure was just a new wave pretender in '78, and the Rich Kids were mocked and scorned by most punk fans......Ure cleaned up later on in the New Romantic era, which was more suited to his style, but stuff like this had a low, insignificant following at the time. It's watered-down 'new wave', and out of sync with the times.

  • @rabsmiff yeah but it sounds good

  • matlock should have stayed with the pistols, they could have been a five man band with vicious playing the tamborine or something, this song is nice to see from a nostalgic point of view, but musically it wasnt great

  • matlocks bass on this totally knocked me out..out doing mccartney...the one thing that bugged me with the band was midge ure..his involvement with teen band Slick..i could never erase when watching or listening to the rich kids..without him they might have reached higher heights...nothing against midge, but i beleive there was too much baggae...great bassline though

  • wow.. wild crowd.. haha

  • Awesome footage. I saw them live at 14 years old about 4 days after they recorded tis.

  • Why are Rich Kids the Missing Link to the 1980s? Read all about last night's reunion at Shapersofthe80s dotcom

  • they were in the 70s not the 80s man

  • ... they are the missing link between 70s glam rock and 80s fop pop, tate. Click my link and read on...

  • They played an awesome gig last night in London

  • Love it ... never heard them until earlier today when I read a friend of mine was excited about them reforming

  • I'm off to see them on Thursday, which just happens to be my birthday. Not sure I can jump around like a loonie but I'll do my best :)

  • its GLEN not glan change the decription! haha very underated band matlock is a great musician, midge ure with hair? ha!

  • he did u shud delete yur comment

  • the rich kids are reuniting did you read that? i hope they film it!

  • Twat? Try being replaced by a junkie with no talent. I have to say Glen handled the situation with class and moved on. Sid is famous for killing and dying. Not for his music. Glen was on Never Mind recording. Not Sid.

  • very well said!

  • @oldphoque Agree with the Glen comments, but it was Steve that played all the bass parts on Bollocks wasn't it?

  • I agree.

  • underappreciated Glen sod

  • Before THE ASH this band was something similar in the past times

  • Poor old Matlock. Decried the Pistols for this insipid shit.

  • poor Glen so pop....beurk

  • Ok thisis not Class....but I bought their

album, it had 4 great tracks on it,thisis

one of 'm. produced by the late great Mick Ronson. SOO TRUE.♫

  • Midge Ure is wearing that shirt in so many clips i have seen of the Rich kids, maybe the real reason he joined Ultravox is because they offered him a new one.

  • My first ever live band! Saw them in a hotel in N Ireland with about 20 people in the audience. They were loud........and sadly the album did not remotely catch the live Rich Kids sound.

  • it reminds me of Gen X a little.

  • Rock and roll, the way it was meant to be. Perfect!

  • they fuckin suck!

  • Sounds like bad pub rock today ... shame Matlock didn't stick with the Pistols, he brought a lot to that band.

  • yeah, your right

  • Kingofpunk (what a name) you are obviously far too hardcore for anyone who is enjoying this vid so why dont you piss off and find some Eater or Drones vids to slag off?

  • ????Why are you slating me? I like the Rich Kids (Read my original comments again) And I like the Drones & Eater as well. Why are you upset that my name tag is KINGOFPUNK? . I have bought Punk records since 1979 (when I was 12)....so I am confused by your comments . Please reply. Thanks

  • Rusty Egan was the backbone of so much that went on. Great to see him again.

  • INCREDIBLE SONG.nothing similimar today...

  • This is a decent bit of power-pop,imagine how it couldve been tho with a vocalist who was actually into the music & not just posing like a cheap dockyard trollope!

  • Never liked The Rich Kids and this vid just renforces that.

  • Comment removed

  • Aw, Rusty Egan, bless 'im!

  • Because this "band"made still 4 decent

    tunes,produced by Ronson.

    Ghosts Of Princes In Towers

    Hung On You

Strange one,and this one ain't THAT bad in retrospect.Juist innocent powerpop ,

I admire Captain Beefheart ,yet I can listen to this too.

  • Thats a very fair and balanced comment dude...

  • I always like the rich kids and steve and pauls professionals never liked johns pil tho

  • Can't deny, Matlock's a damned good guitarist.

  • bassist you mean

  • sound like a wishywashy jam!pre-ultravox!

  • More than a touch of the Big Star about the riffs, never noticed that at the time. Probably because I was too busy turning my nose up. Tch! Youth, eh?

  • Wow! It seems as though you either love them or hate them...there is no in between. I love them.

  • Funny I never noticed it before, but yeah you're right, this kind of reminds me of 'Oh My Soul' (Midge is still a cunt though)

  • @seerauberjohnny

Midge Ure has more talent in his pinky nail than you and the rest of the elitist, ignorant and uninformed fruitcakes will ever have. That's a fact.

  • Maybe Glenn felt more comfortable in this kind of outfit, not as extreme as the Pistols, but probably more enjoyable. Reminds me of 60`s Mod, very Who-esque.

  • It indeed was a lot safer then what Pistols did but still I enjoyed their album back then, offered a bit of musical variation in my punkrock collection. It was as "pop" I could allow myself to go back then :-) teenage years.

  • very underated band although ghosts of princes and towers is a much better song, wish there were some live performances on you tube to look at.

  • Exellent POP,

    gHOSTS oF pRINCES iN tOWERS

has some amazing songs that stood

the test of time pretty well.

  • Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant record.Midge Ure in great voice and great guitars. What more could you want?

  • Did some twit actually call this a boy band...jeez, send them to the pit of fire! I think this is great. I like Glen Better when he's doing his own stuff, but I still like this.

  • I'm shocked that people are calling this "shite," "awful" or "dated." This still has tons of energy and it is fresher than most rock 30 years on. If you hate this, then you likely hate Nick Lowe, Buzzcocks, early Costello, Replacements and, yep, Small Faces. "Rich Kids" ain't "Ghosts of Princes In Towers" but it certainly blows away almost anything else. This band is so underrated it's sick.

  • Well done mate. The Rich Kids were alright & if Midge took the offer early 75 (looking for a singer in the Swankers)this WOULD have been the Pistols. Matlock has had a raw deal in the whole Pistols saga, the Mod influenece kept the Pistols sharp

  • fucking ace! i have been a big fan of matlock for years, check out his great 45's with the spectres!! stories/things (demon 1980) is a classic!!!

  • This is a true story.

Im saw Glen Matlock at the Crickerters pub in the oval in 91. He was in a band called the Roadholders. After the gig he was at the bar, I went up to talk to him and the conversation obviously drifted towards the Pistols. Whereupon his exact words were "lets talk about me and I'll buy you a drink"

Suffice to say I got a free pint and a 5 minute conversation!!

There is a well known saying "Never meet your heroes, for they will always disappoint you"

  • ...so don't leave us hanging. What did Glen say that disappointed you?

  • You're boring, you supposed to have gotten' a drink from your hero ,yet you're not satisfied

. what has'nt been said about the Pistols, that

    has'nt been said before¿

  • Give me a break!! I had never mat him before! The Pistols were my heroes. I wasn't being nasty I was just recounting an actual event. I suspect a lot of famous people are actually quite boring when you actally meet them. The way you are talking it's as if you know loads of celebrities!!

  • who recognize midge ure from ultravox on vocals ?

    cheers from marseille france

  • Wow. some people realy disliek this song! It's OKk, yeah, it's not brilliant, but not bad either. Just another of the late 70s things we all heard on BBC1. I have the album (ok, the cassette) It's..Ok. I've heard worse(my own band based in Hook Hampshire in 1977-78 for example were pure shite !@) These blokes have energy anyway !

  • THIS ROX!!

    LOVE EM

    COLEY

  • This is a punk boyband mess. I'm not surprised the punks all spat at Midge Ure.

  • @bragget

I know. What a terrible thing to play and focus on actual music instead of subscribing to some preconceived ideology and forcing an image. I guess they should have been sliding around the stage in their own feces and vomiting on the audience instead of playing.

  • Glenn Matlock = The best old school punk bassist

  • Watching this it makes me realize why the hell Malcolm got Glenn Matlock out of the Pistols immediately. Great bassist but jesus this is awful.

  • lol, well they weren't the only punk band to jump on stage, the rezillos, sham 69, the buzzcocks, and a couple others i think did too

  • so true. Good to see someone remembers the Rezillos. And this isn't bad at all compared to the shit today. Glens bass is flowing as usual, and Midge looks better with longish hair and no 'stache

  • this is horrible

  • they were great live, but the album was badly produced and effectively buried them

  • @sunbeam11 The CD re-issue rectified the bad production to a degree.

  • @crapple009 interesting, I might give the cd a go then thanks

  • @sunbeam11 Definitely sounded great in the car today. 14 songs to boot as well. I'm just surprised by many of the anti- Rich Kids posts here, btw. They sounded more RnR to me than Power Pop, but that's just me.

  • @crapple009 I remember seeing them a few times in London, the live shows were great but there was something about them that felt 'wrong'. Maybe they were just out of step with the times? The muddy Ronson production of the LP can't have helped take up.

  • Oooh! "Power-pop" *chuckle* There were a lot worse than Rich Kids though, tbh

  • poseurs then, poseurs now. entertaining, tho! ah, wee midge!

  • Better than the pistols? NOT!!!!! Better than the Bay City Rollers? OK.

  • Sex Pistols were great. Bay City Rollers were great. Rich Kids were great!

    Lots of great music!!!

  • 30 million times better than anything by The Sex Pistols...

  • I love Glen's recent solo stuff, but I'm afraid to say that this is some mediocre shit right here. Hasn't dated well AT ALL!

  • This is as awesome as it was 30 years ago when it was new!!!

  • GLAN Matlock?

  • Waaaay better than the Pistols.

  • at least it appears to be a live performance and not just lip synching to a recorded track which is more than most could manage on totp.

  • Sorry, but it's lip synched. Note that the applause drowns out the fade out.

However, it is a different vocal track than on the single. That was standard for TOTP.

  • trully dreadful

  • hey i just logged on to your music iman4d & that was truly dreadful!

  • Cheers for this, never realised they were on TOTP

  • absolute shite

  • One more comment... All Midge needs is a green striped rugby shirt, a handy dandy notebook, and he'll look like he belongs on Blue's Clues!

  • Ah, there's nothing like a young Midge... too bad the song was so lame.
