This "repair" lasted about 2 weeks. And, as a friend with far greater mechanical inclination than myself pointed out, once the boot is ripped it's pretty much all over with. A little dirt and grit gets in there and you're not going to get it out, and closing the rip up just seals the grit inside where it can thrash things real good. Just ride on it till it starts popping even when the wheel ISN'T turned, and then replace it with a new or reman part.
great idea, keeps you from having to remove the whole drive shaft and will have you from going to a mechanic...lucky for me i just popped my bmx tire...tell me, would using an RTV sealant also help, i have some laying around
Sounds like a mix of Tom Bodett and Harry S Plinkett
Incredibly unfunny "jokes" as he drones on
Crappy music and imagery
Makes it hard to take the video seriously
The idea is good. I improved on it some - used a wheelbarrow inner tube didn't slit it. Wrapped a length around the boot, and ran the zip ties INSIDE the tube. When tightened one end of the tube fits into the other. So far so good.
STILL WORKS GREAT 2,000 MILES LATER AFTER FIX USE A HUGE OVER WRAP AND LOTS OF TIES. JACK THE CAR FRONT UP INSTALL 15 MINUTES LATER YOU'RE GOOD TO GO. AND I GET TO KEEP MY ORIGINAL OEM FACTORY CV JOINTS.
Also the big drive shaft or axle nut (32 mm) at the centre of the wheel is very difficult to remove if you do not have a pneumatic rotary tool. Which is why this is an excellent temporary measure to fix the leak until the CV joints wear out and the time comes to fix a new CV joint with new boots. Hats off to PoopDogDiao for his "method" and the time taken to share this video with others.
Excellent out-of the box thinking by PoopDog Diao. His "repair" can be used until the CV joints wear out and the time comes for a new CV joint to be installed. Saves hundreds of dollars in mechanix fees.
I"M redoing mine because the inner tube is wearing out . I did this over a year ago and it worked great, C V boots can be a hard job I've did them, beats the heck out of tearing an old van apart. So for the skeptics it works and is cheap.
As an engineer, I applaud folks unafraid to venture outside the box. Negative Flat-earth society folks have a tougher life. Cheers Poopdog home run from one whose car will need major surgery to replace a boot. Besides, when I get to it I'll buy O'Reilly's auto parts brand new whole half-shafts with new inner and outer boots and dust seals, no core charge so you keep originals. About same labor cost to replace entire unit as an outer boot. My auto mechanic found this a clever fix!
Great fix!! Pure genius! Thank you PoopDog! Used a motorcycle inner tube, 1,000 miles so far city and freeway, no problems or leaks. Gonna do other side before it tears. Thanks!
Or you could do this the right way, and not waste your time taking the wheel off cutting up a innertube. Most cars are two bolts and the CV joint comes out.
This cv boot repair may or may not work but At least this guy put effort into making this video for us to watch. If you dont like it or dont find it interesting then dont watch it.
That is one hell of an abortion.....I could see it getting you out of trouble if your offroading and you need to keep mud out of the cv but other than that it sucks. Zip ties are not very strong and will break. The rubber could take out your flexline leaving you with no brakes. :O Just buy a cv shaft and be done with it....
that is the worst repair i have ever seen mot failure this guys a tit he would be better off washing the dishes and getting a mechanic to fix his car.stay off the drugs toss pot.
Absolute waste of time, don't bother even trying to watch this piece of junk. I wish I could have the last 3 minutes of my life back. The video is 5 minutes long, but I could only stomach 3 minutes of it.
Of all the stupid things I have seen on youtube this takes the cake. For you to call this a repair is the height of stupidity and ignorance. You are a fool to attempt such a hatchet job repair let alone publish it in a attempt to encourage others to do the same. Have you taken no thought into account what is going to happen when your bicycle tube covered in grease comes loose and slaps it all over your brake rotor! You are a danger to all responsible drivers. I hope you don't drive your family.
I like the idea. I get so sick of people ONLY going status quo and spending big money in the process in order to fix it "correctly" I love to fix things in peculiar ways that last, especially cars.

then 4 mins after you have started riding again and it all falls apart, go and buy a new boot for $15 and do it properly.

@gavinksmith
I think its worth a try. The only other choices are to completely disassemble the axle to replace the seal, or buy a whole new axle.
