If he chose roles which he could relate to, good for him - and good for us because we got a performance full of emotion and feeling which we did not have before with tenors who only sang the words. And if you reach a 'pinnacle' in your career it is normal to want to extend yourself and your repertoire- and that is what the Maestro chose - respect his decision and respect the man for what he is- probably the most beautiful tenor voice we have ever witnessed.
I believe Jose is singing a verse in Catalan. Sounds like it. Correct me if I'm wrong. I love this song! :) I watch the Three Tenors Christmas concert every year on video. :) It's been my personal holiday tradition for nearly a decade. I even sometimes watch it when its not even close to Christmas. XD

Placido Domingo is a dramatic tenor yes? Luciano pavarotti was lyric yes? So what kind of tenor is Jose Carreras? Is he lyric tenor still if there is less difference between his and Domingo's voice than between his and Pavarotti's?
domingo and carreras are complete tenor.. i think carerras is more passionate...i agree with you.. now carreras' and domingo's voices are very similar.. before not.. but now...yes
Domingo is a dramatic tenor, Carreras and Pavarotti are lyric tenors. Carreras's voice however darkened prematurely because he sang many spinto and dramatic roles which were too heavy for his voice.
revivaljesus. I have heard before what you say about the career choices Carreras made. It is also said about other singers. Why do they do it? Do they know it will damage the voice? Is is that they just can't resist the roles?
Carreras never really had the time to develop a steady vocal technique before he was rushed into a solo career. Somebody called Carreras a gambler. He was more interested in potraying characters he could relate to as a person rather than singing Donizetti and light Verdi for the rest of his career. Herbert Von Karajan, who thought very highly of Carreras signed him for heavy roles to which Carreras accepted. In more many ways Carreras was the second coming of his idol, Di Stefano.
I agree. I am considered on the line from being a dramatic and a liric tenor, much like Carreras. Also, as is mentioned in another comment, Carreras having performed in such heavy operatic roles as tosca and pagliacci (I butchered the spelling on this one) his voice darkend as mine has. Also, remember that Carreras had a battle with lukemia and that did take a hit at his voice. For example listen to his early and later recordings of "O suverain".
@kboyer1 Unfortunately, this is true. Had he not had leukemia, I think his voice would've still been in good shape, even now. The chemotherapy and radiation treatments just screwed up his vocal cords. But his voice is still not bad. Let's just be glad he's still alive, and he's pretty darn healthy. If he had died, the Three Tenors would not have existed.

I think Carreras is a combination of a lyric and dramatic tenor.

Pavarotti was more of a spinto while Carreras is a real lirico (I think) :)
