  • In response to the personal email I received from some racist guy - you really should try living in the century (era) in which you are living in - racism simply went out of style a very long time ago.

  • Same thing is happening to Kankakee Illinois.

  • The TRUE disgrace is to have you posting such disrespectful comments(did one of you actually mention an "N" word signifying racism against African-Amercian citizens? Man, where have you been and what century are you living in? How are they SUPPOSED to have jobs when THERE'S NO PLACES TO GET ONE and retailers STOP BUILDING THERE? MAN, WAKE UP - it all STARTS with the MAN IN THE MIRROR (if you REALLY WANT CHANGE) - YOU DISGUST ME - your talk will NOT STAND THE LIGHT OF DAY at the end of the day

  • @flicka329 'n' word?

    You mean nigger?

Just calling a spade a spade.

  • look at all the ghosts

  • my entire family is from gary (at least after they came to this country). it's a shame most of the steel mills left. working people of ALL ethnicities left and lazy, theiving, gang banging niggers took over. every time i drive down broadway or 5th avenue i wish i could have grown up in the 50s and 60s when gary was in it's prime. the only reason to go there now is for the railcats lol.

  • WOW...WATCHING THE PARADE SCENE WAS COOL CAUSE I DRIVE DOWN BROADWAY EVERYDAY AND IT SADDENS ME THAT BROADWAY DON'T EVEN LOOK HALF AS GOOD AS IT ONCE DID...GARY IS A DECAYING CITY AND I WISH IT DID LOOK LIKE IT DID BACK THEN...BROADWAY IS A SHAME AND SO IS GARY...EVEN THE PARADES NOW ARE GARBAGE...GARY WILL NEVER BE LIKE IT WAS BACK THEN!!

  • I lived in Gary from 1953 to 1965. It is sad what the people of Gary have done to such a beautiful place. Blocks and blocks of beautiful homes are now abandoned. My friends and I used to ride our bikes down town. We lived not far from Tri City Plaza. We used to walk through the woods to get to the plaza from our house. In the summer my friends and I would sleep all night in a tree house we built from scapped wood. Those were great times in Gary.

  • @jackoshaw Rejoice ! great time are coming back , more and more people are sleeping in " houses " made of scrap wood....tents...cardboard box... all over America !

  • This is a thing of the past. The monkeys took over in the late 60's with the cities first ape mayor. How many times do we have to relive this mistake of letting the spooks be in charge of anything. Everything they touch turns into shit. Look at Detroit, another gorrilla infested city. All they do is complain, steal and accept welfare with no intensions of working for anything

  • hay i live by gary

  • @VannahVonSally

They should have brought in the National Guard a long time ago while the commercial landscape was changing. That was the mistake.

A city which is undergoing great economic changes is left with a vacuum, without a stabilizing force in place; that vacuum is filled by crime.

  • i bet those parade members wouldnt dare march down Broadway nowadays lmao, they'd get lit up quicker than i could blink

  • Thanks for posting the film of the Horace Mann HS Band - Ken Resur director - wow - how far we have fallen - RIP Gary and the US. Never to be seen again. What a shame.

  • I was born in Gary in 1951. what a great town it was. Polk Bros, Grants, the Village, Kresges dept stores. My mom and dad met in 1948 at the Tivoli theater. Everyone back then could get a job, have a middle class family, and it was a great town. had sodas at Walgreens dept. store. and then

The jobs left, now this whole country is like what Gary became.

  • Back when being middle class meant you can have fun, have a life, and something to look forward to.

  • I Hear ya,its not gonna change until the mindset changes, you have a mayor that is double dipping,Hummer, wife has a sweet job, never ends, not to mention the son....

  • If you are tired of the same old people running this community ?

Come join the discussion @ The New Political Ticket For Gary Indiana

  • One thing I noted when I looked around Gary on GoogleMaps' Street View feature is how the vacant lots and decaying, empty buildings are being covered with vegetation. It appears that nature is reclaiming the abandoned areas and "shrinking" the city. Some day it will be mostly forest.

As someone said on "Life After People," in the end, it's the environment that wins.

  • I refer to Gary as a single-use city. Sad that the seeds of the disaster that overwhelmed it were there from the very beginning.

I live in Indiana, and everyone I know calls Gary a hellhole.

  • @BoyScout1960 Got that right. I'm a few towns over from Gary, I wont even drive through there. Best to take the freeway to go there. Why would you go there? drugs that's all i can think of.

  • It is quite obvious that this "melting pot" we call America is not, and never will, work. Time to go back to the countries of our ancestors.

  • i remember in the 60'sgetting on the bus in the harbor to go into gary to shop, we had fun, then the buses stopped running. i got older and still went to gary and hung out with my friends in the early 70's i really noticed changes in the neighborhoods. downtown was changed lot then, stores were closing, it was not the same anymore. then going into gary was not fun any more. a sad time for me.

  • if anyone can help me i lived in gary ind in 1967 i stayed at the boulavard hotel on brodway,it was a house of prostitution but was run very well naver any trouble ,i was just wondering if it was still there or how i could get some pic of of broadway .

  • The parade shown at 0:52 is telling. The marchers head West on 5th Ave. Only the ten-story building in the center stands today. The buildings to the right have been replaced by a parking deck and vacant lots. I cannot imagine this city ever returning to anything even approaching its former glory. It would be best to move any salvageable architecture elsewhere and reforest what was once Gary, Indiana.

  • I never saw a girl like Nancy in Gary. The city is

saturated with colored people, or is that people of color? The women I saw look like they just came out of a jungle. Black as coal. Like everything else, when the colored take over something developed by the white man, they ruin it. This includes cities, schools, stores, nations, neighborhoods, parks,

downtown's, sports, and many other things. Colored people are obsessed with hating the white man.

  • @headley62 You are so right - heaven forbid we pretend not to see the obvious. We are builders of communities and maintainers of law and respecters of properties. Thats who we are for thousands of years. They - the black equals break down and destroy everything they touch. They are like dogs in an alley - they eat, sleep, shit and reproduce - Thats it - That's their contribution.

  • Does anyone live where Theodore "Beaver" Clever does, hell no, so get over it.

  • And before I go I don't appreciate the constant mentioning of the word nigger which you are showing your age by trying to stir up something you aren't intellectually capable of handling. By the way I know a few crooks from a Gary gone by the names of Chacharis and Mandich and their titles were that of 'Mayor of the City of Gary."

  • To the guy who commented on the hotel "whore house" I see you still come down Broadway on 23rd Ave and down Connecticut St. on 17th and 18th Ave, still know your way around here don't you

  • I grew up in the Gary in the video and work in the one now. I do know that you condescending whites don't want to take your responsibility in this and this is history repeating itself. You all ran it in the ground then left it and when it couldn't be kept up, it was lost and after its torn down, now you want it back.

  • Looked like a nice place to live back then but then the niggers came and destroyed it with crime/drugs. This is what our country will look like if obama has his way. No society ruled by blacks has ever thrived.

  • i lived there in 1966 at a hotel called boulvard hotel ,it was a whore house any have pics or info about that hotel

  • A slice of dark comedy. Steel made then ruined Gary just like Cars made then ruined Flint, Michigan. Turns out, both products can be made cheaper/better by machines or workers elsewhere (in the non-union south first, then by foreigners). That's what blew this place out, not race, leadership, etc. Demolish what's vacant, shrink the city's footprint, and get over it. The world has moved on.

  • didnt the niggers destroy gary like 20 years ago ?

  • incredible to see this~!!...i went to horace mann...my family came to gary in the early 1920's...immigrants...it was home to me...andy

  • I wenyt to HM and graduated in 65. Great video reminding me of my childhood and the wonderful education I got there. Some fine teachers, Mr. Sanidas, Mrs. Fluelling and Miss Bopp that taught me German starting in 6th grade. Very innovative at the time. McDonalds on fifth ave. Tivoli Tap Pizza, Miller Beach, the Pavilion, Palace theater and accross the street the Copper Kettle. All Land marks in a city which just happened to be next to the world's largest Steel Mill.

  • Such a great center of education(William Wirt, etc.) Then why did Gary fall apart at the seams so easily?!

  • Every American "single industry" city based on manufacturing like Gary has fallen apart. Not just Gary, but all of them

  • say it loud .... IM WHITE AND IM PROUD !!!

  • Hey, that's racist!!!!! If you are white, you are NOT allowed to be proud of your heritage or ancestors!! Sorry, but thats the way it goes!

  • we had a ball

  • marquette had tennis courts...damn..my city used to be the shit!

  • wow, this brings me back to my grandmother telling me stories of how she spent weekends in Gary shopping and running around town. Its sad that such a beautifull city went down hill, and is now nothing but gangs and delapating buildings. what the fuck is wrong with people???

  • No work. The world changes with no income. It is not the people....it is the leadership.

  • You are 100% correct!!

  • look at all the white people.

  • WOW.......Born in raised in Gary since 1977 WOW...

  • Chicago - there are many many of innocent kids dying everyday because of drive by shootings and bystanders. A 6 year old yesterday. White Cracker fault? Why is all the problems in the black community whities fault? You don't have problems like this in Chinatown? Many Hispanics communities have some problems but nothing like this.

  • All issues in the black community aren't the white man fault but they (your ancestors and the govt) play a major role in it. How would the white man fair if he was not afforded the opportunity of an education for roughly 400 years. Do you think that can be repaired in a generation or two? My parents attended separate but equal schools (equal my ass).

  • Oh bullcrap snake. Why do you blame everyone? You answer is bullshit. I agree that there has been injustice. From the slavery to the 1964 civil rights bill. When are you going to stop blaming everyone else for the failures of the black community. You need to believe in a Bill Cosby philosophy rather then the honorable REV JESSE JACKSON.

  • Again, I've seen it and experienced it. I don't expect someone who has never been discriminated against to understand. People like you think the worst of Rev Wright but most of what he said is true. Oh by the way I served 23 years in the military as an officer, am I unpatriotic? I'm sorry you're right, absolutely none of the pitfalls of balcks can be attributed to whites. I blame who needs to be blamed. Again, I live in a white area and do quite well for myself but I know what I know.

  • Again do your history. 1964, BULLSHIT. School desegregation didn't take place until the 70's. I could care less about a damn bill that didn't mean a damn thing. Again slavery was abolished in 1865, but tell it to you we (black folk) were all equal then.

  • Again, I call it like I see it. Of course you have those that don't succeed because they don't want to. Who the hell is Bill Cosby, spokesman for all black people. White people listen to whomever tells them what they desire to hear. Come on Cap. I lived both lives. Like Obama I'm mixed, very light-skinned so I was ridiculed by both black and white and lived in both areas, therefore I think I can speak better to this than you.

  • Look the absence of the steel mill is the main reason why Gary became what it is today. Steel was the main product coming out of that city and most people worked in the mills.. A whole lot of people lost their jobs. Blacks had nothing to do with that..They had a lot of mayors over there fucking up to.

  • Look at Gary.....it is not only a ghost town but it looks like Beirut. And if this doesn't sound like a racist statement I don't know what does BUT it is the truth. There isn't a country in the world that is 90% black that is prosperous and stable. Somalia, Sudan, Jamaica, Haiti, Congo, Mozambique Can anyone correct me?

  • Apparently, in the 1960's, there were no black people at all in Gary. Riiiiiightttt

  • I lived in Gary in the 60's and I'm black, so what are you saying?

  • I'm saying that this "informational" film embodies the racism of its time, by only depicting white people.

  • Ok Randy, I can agree with that.

  • have you any info on how to get pics or books about gary in the 1960,s really would appriciate it.

  • Yes, but how many towns have been made famous by a Broadway song. And immortalized by the stories of Jean Shepard.

  • things sure have changed

  • Glad I got a chance to actually live through some of the "good" era of Gary shown on this film. How times have changed.

  • Looks like the "get up and go" got up and went. Now the city is one big ghetto with deserted buildings and serious crime.

  • I have a different take on it. When blacks move in --- crime moves in. Just look at every major city in the U.S. Whenever they seem to dominate the community crime seems to pop up. Sad but a statisical fact.

  • sorry but fuck that: there are no cities that looks exactly like early Gary anymore..

  • It's more complicated than that. It's probably more of a 50-50 proposition. White flight and divestiture on the one hand; Black unemployment and crime on the other.

Study the Obama speech on race to understand the nuance and finer points.

  • I have to agree with you on some points. There are your working class blacks that wanna do good and raise a good family. But then there are those blacks that are a hurt on any neighborhood.

  • You can't discount Poor White Trash. I'm black and color has absolutey nothing to do with it. Not sure if you're white or not, but if you are I'd bet I trump your salary X5and I have no idea of what you do. Be careful of what you say. It happens that blacks (most) do not have the opportunities that whites do. My only saving grace is that I moved to white Glen Park in the early 70's and got the white man's education.

  • It's just a hard cold and sad reality that when blacks move in....somehow crime follows. Why is that?

In my town 5 years ago...87% white. No major crimes. And not major presence of gangs.

Now it's about 45% black thanks to subprime lending ....3 murders in 07 5 bank robberies and tons of breaking and entering.

    Sad

  • It's just a shame. I was born there in 1965 and lived there until I graduated high school "Lew Wallace 83." Thank God I got the hell away. I go back and visit quite often because my dad will not leave. The place has really gone down due to the lack of opportunity, rampant drug usage and single parent households.

  • Single parent households aren't the cause of the problem, they are a symptom - family breakdowns and teen pregnancies result from the stress of unemployment, poverty and lack of education.

  • now its full of crime, gangs, drugs and murders
