Eh, they said she is their treasure and she is obviously the youngest person there. They killed the one mermaid because she was the oldest of the ones there. I don't think a mermaid has to eat another mermaid to become immortal. What I REALLY want to know is why they couldn't just scrape a hunk of meat off of her. Surely living with a wedge missing is better than being dead.

Mana is a human who was fed mermaids flesh to serve as a mermaid food when she turned 15 to help the old bags regain their youth and beauty. in other words, had the old women eaten Mana, they would have taken her appearance and become young again. in this series, mermaids make only a special few immortal, and those special few can then become magic food for mermaids.
