Schaffer walked over to the singer machine and studied the dial. The meter ranged from Barlow all the way to Owens. He adjusted the knob till the arrow met both half way and he press a large black button. the great metal machine rumbled then moments later Stu popped out.
not impressed so far. I can hear a lot of influences, but nothing original. My opinion might change by the time I finish listening to the album - and maybe listen to it a dozen times. But, to me there is too much mucking about with effects on the vocals to really be able to tell what Block is capable of. Also, lyrics-wise I'm finding it to be lacking in comparison with previous albums - and music-wise it is a bit too Iron Maiden [i.e. repetitive] for my liking.
@Ninitos1 Hopefully, I will one day - only if they're in a festival with other bands I want to see though. I'm not willing to risk traveling just for them to be let down.
@metalbejb I think I know what you are talking about. I wasn't impressed either when i first listened the new album. Im not saying its bad, i just wasnt impressed. I kept listening and i've noticed that most song are just as great as the old ones. Surely its much better than the last album. It's the habit that we all have : We love the old classics and it takes us time to give a spot in that list, for a new song. What about the lyrics of "Anguish of Youth" ?
@rej1cry I found the lyrics for Youth of Anguish to be a bit too full of "he/she" and gave me the impression that they were trying to replicate the feelings stirred by the lyrics for Ghost of Freedom, but failed. One line in particular that made me think 'errrrrrr........ wtf?' is the "precious cheeks".
Now don't get me wrong. I think "Stu" has some quality to his voice, but needs to find HIS OWN STYLE.
I also noticed when listening to the song "Equilibrium" on here, the highs on that song bear quite the resemblance to Rob Halford. Are you fucking kidding me, this is getting out of hand.
@SasquatchHeroin Listen to Into Eternity, and you'll find his own style there. He's intentionally trying to hit the same style as previous Iced Earth vocalists so the long time fans won't be estranged. He did his job perfectly right with this album. I'm a big fan of his, so Into Eternity will always be his home as far as I know, becaus there he can be original.
I've been listening to Iced Earth for over 14 years now and have been a fan all that time. But, as far as I'm concerned "Stu" took the high vocals from Owens and the low vocals from Barlow and made them more generic sounding and less effective. Now I know some of you are all about Stu and wanna lick his ass or whatever, but you need to ask yourselves "Do I really know a damn thing about what sounds good?"
Barlow, The Ripper, and this new guy, are all great singers and all suit Iced Earth as far as I'm concerned. It's good to have a bit of variety. Iced Earth's main man is Schaffer, as long as that genius is still in charge I'll buy the albums.
@ChevoB Who cares, Music isn't a competition. I love Stu and Ripper but Barlow will always be my faovirte vocalist regardless of range or technique shit.
@SlayerPayback Lots of opinion at many points, I know many people who recall Ripper being amazingly versatile, Someone even said more versatile then Barlow, despite if that is actually true or not. Barlow had amazing lower range,a great aggresive ''thrash metal'' voice,Decent enough falsetto (espeically for a baritone of his range). Ripper was just all high pitched screams to me, and i wasn't to impressed with his clean singing compared to barlow. Still love them all 3 tough.
@Guyverhoeven I agree. I think people who fight over the best singer in IE is what causes them not to go as high as they should've long ago. I can honestly say When Ripper did TGB his voice suited it perfectly. Barlow made his albums pure hell for douche bags, and heaven for us. Block has made this album very impressive, I hope they release something else soon so I can hear some more awesomeness.
i'm seeing iced earth on march 19 !!!! fuck yeahhhhhhhhhhhh !!!

I couldn't stand Tim Ripper. Stu is the best choice to replace Matt by far. His voice fits the sound far better than Ripper's ever did.

His range is awesome. The album sounds great so far. I still like Barlow a wee bit more but to be expected.

Stu is way too Underrated !! Why to limit him with 2 kind of vocals while he can beast out 4 -5 different kind.
His High pitch is just too beautiful.
I hope Iced earth would come out of there comfort zone and grow some balls to use his talent FULLY.
Nevertheless, The album is pretty amazing.

@hinson5150 I totally agree. I saw Ripper last week w/ Dio Disciples and he killed it. Both these guys have more range than Barlow.
