This is the perfect unison of guitar and lyric. I wish they'd do one last piece of music, something orchestrated and simple, like this. Just one more!
Hatful of Hollow was always lying around in the kitchen when I was like 7 or 8....used to put this track on of a Sunday morning when no one else was awake and look out of the high-rise window at the sunrise over our crowded, shitty, crime-ridden city. Amazing how beautiful it looked when this song was on :) Still remains one of the most gut-wrenchingly evocative tracks I know.... beautifully, charmingly, hauntingly sad :') Pure soul music.
@Sascopa I love that comment. Music unites us, even when we are solitary. Isn't it funny how certain songs remind you of times and places? I remember listening to this on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Manchester. I'd just moved into a new house. Someone had lent me Hatful and I put it on. Looking out over wet slate rooftops, a lead grey sky. But feeling a strange bliss that I'd found The Smiths. It feels as if the songs were almost written for you, and you alone.
This is a very difficult song to play on the guitar. I've been trying for years and have only recently been able to play the first verse in close to real time. This is pure brilliance.
@VeganRake. Listening to it on a gorgeous Indian Summers morning in an English back garden, shimmering sunlight reflection Marrs exquisite playing....
Back to the old house was released several months prior to 2000 miles. Marr's pretenders influence was mainly James Honeyman Scott, who did not play on Learning to Crawl and who died in 1982.
This(version) and I know its over are my two favorite Smiths songs.....ever! I grew up on this and I still love it. Listening to these Cats got me through a lot of good and bad times. One of the Best bands of all time.
Wow. Thank You for posting...I missed my high school prom to see him make a return to L.A. in 1991. I have all tour posters, shirts, and programs from 1991-1993.
I've yet to come across an interview with Johnny Marr where he acknowledges the major influence that The Pretenders had on the early Smiths stuff. Listen to 2000 Miles form 'Learning to Crawl' to see the similarities in the guitar lines. Still genius though.
hey any Mozz fans out the happen to have "at amber" "I can have both" "he Cried" and "Bengali in Platforms"?? i would really like to hear those songs again. :( seems so unfair, i want to cry.........
this version of the song is hauntingly beautiful, thanks for posting.
