  • I find it a little ironic that Tezuka was speaking about CG animation and acceptance of Japan's animation worldwide a scant two years before his death. These days, CG is practically a given almost anywhere. That, and we've got folks like you and I, who practically LIVE off of anime, all over the world.

I wonder what Tezuka would think if he saw the state of Japanese animation today?

  • Gosh, I dunno. Single film? Probably some multi-laserdisc import set (LDs have a maximum run time of 60 min, so longer movies require two disc.) My LDs of "Arcadia of my Youth" and "Laputa" both have ¥12,500 price tags. But, it may be the 3-LD box set of Otomo's "Memories", but I don't have the price sticker.

  • What's your most expensive anime film in your collection? And if you could make a rough estimate how much have you spent on anime throughout your life? Do you collect any other anime related products other then films and tv shows?

  • Quality review as always, Jii-san!

  • Good review. Thanks for mentioning me. I like the US title "Astonishing Work". It sounds better than the Australian title "Experimental Films" . Legend of the Forest was my favourite. A combination of various animations with Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony makes me appreciate Tezukas work for what it is, a masterpiece. Every anime fan should have this.

  • I agree, "Experimental" seems a poor marketing term. It conjures the image of a film school student trying some stop-motion project with licorice twists and jelly beans.
