From what I understand this was supposed to be a Husker Du song originally but that didn't happen because of the breakup. Is this the ep or Intolerance version? I remember liking the ep version better but I haven't heard either in years. I looked him up on this channel because my Pandora station played a newer song of his and it was fuckin' great.
@travisnealtodd70 This is the 12" version. I have no idea why the album version is the way it is. This is perfect simple 60's pop/rock 'n' roll. three chords (a little embellishment) then two of the three, only, for the middle eighth. Pure. :-)
@travisnealtodd70 According to Bob's autobio, this was originally supposed to go on New Day Rising, but Bob talked Grant out of it because it supposedly sounded too much like a contemporary Dream Syndicate song and he thought it was kind of weak. Bob believes this might have started the bad blood that later lead to the breakup.
I'll even quote a bit: "I think it really hurt him (shooting down the song), and I think he viewed me as an adversary from then on. Years later I felt bad about it, and I often wondered if it might have been the beginning of the end."
@ratanx lol. I know the Dream Syndicate song he's talking about: "Until Lately". I noticed the resemblance on my own, but to hear that's the reason Husker Du never played it is somehow amusing. Great song this is all the same.
i have been looking for this for years. apparently this song is about the end of husker du, as 2541 was the number of their office. the other two songs on the ep seem to possibly to talk about the breakup as well: "come come" and "let go". how are they?
He's my cousin, but he is nothing but a junky! He is in his fifties and still probably his nothing to do with his kids. As a man I have absolutely no respect for him. As a musician he had talent but fucking lost it in the drugs.
@lightfighter442 Sorry to hear that. Just seen him yesterday live - he still got "it" in case you talk music and expression. Otherwise, he seemed a very sad human wreck to me :(
@lightfighter442 I hope that isn't true, because it's very sad to think that Grant's still a mess and doesn't pay attention to his kids. I didn't realise he had more than one, in fact I only recently found out that he has a daughter.
I still have Grant Hart's first solo album, "Intolerance", which is still one of my favorite albums. But I've never heard this version of "2541", which I believe is from the EP he did before "Intolerance". God, how many people today even know what an EP is?
Always loved Husker Du and Bob Mould but there was always something special about Grant Hart's vocals, this sweet sweet song takes me back to my youth.
bought this 12" at a record store for 2 bucks. That was the biggest no brainer I've ever faced

I saw some recent concert footage of Grant Hart doing this song. I hope he's not back on drugs again because he looks like a mess.

@FrostedFen agree! Grants input in HüDü is poorly underrated.
Great Song. Thx for posting.

One of the last vinyl recordings I ever bought. Gaslight Records in Bourke St Melbourne. Puts 99% of rubbish I've heard subsequently to shame.
