Khrushchev does not have any sophistication or refinement of a suave politician. He behaves like a rustic clown. But, I must say this - this man is very frank....he cannot fake anything; if he laughs, it is a genuine loud and hearty guffaw; if he argues, he does it vehemently. He has no inhibitions whatsoever. This is both good and bad, for a nation's leader
Celebrating his Watergate Nixon got rid of the personality cult of Maoism. Somewhere in the darkest rooms of the White House he enjoyed the chinese newspapers: "Such a great leader can be a fraud? China is screaming!" Haldeman ß Ehrlichmann had to calm down visitors, asking: "Is this the devil under the Oval Office laughing at the congress?"
The affair started when some suspicious Quakers created a sort of very irascoulous and bloodthursdy squirrels, to hunt for cat´s testicles---
Nixon: 'yeah right. you're a tiresome little commie, aren't you'
Krushchev: 'you will overspend so much for your military, that you will have to borrow from china. In 50 years, by 2009, you will celebrate China's 60th aneversury by lighting up the empire state building in red china's colors, becasue you cant afford to offend it'
Nixon 'go fuck yourself Nikita, and quit smoking so much dope - it's affecting your thinking'
@harshvgaus You know that saying about the path to Hell and the best intentions? Khrushchev had the right attitude for his country, but as far as deStalinization went he refused to believe that there was any fault in the Soviet system itself, and therefore any reforms he tried to enact never went far enough to make lasting changes, and he never realized that a centralized market economy could never compete with a Western market economy in providing the right consumer goods to the public.
No copy exists of the complete telecast. This newsreel clip is all that's left. Gee, it's bad enough they erased game shows, let alone political debates....
Yeah. No sense of history. 'Course it was still early days for videotape, much less color. They may have thought the long-term stability of the recording and durability of tape would be a problem, but if so, they should have kinescoped the recordings. On the other hand, maybe they were just cheap. "Hey! Should we keep these tapes?" "H*ll no! Videotape's REUSABLE!" How would you like to be the idiot who erased those tapes?" Me neither.
Compared to his predecessor -- Stalin -- he was a nice guy, but only on a relative scale. Make no mistake, he was actually a ruthless, brutal man, willing to do anything to accomplish his aims. He was a dedicated Marxist-Leninist, and probably believed the things he said, but that didn't make him right.
@brianb500 he esclated the war in vienam, he was corupt and was a dirty campainer, the name trickey dick was given to him by the woman he beat in 1950, very funny eveyonene he ran against he smered as being a commie! Nixion started the mondren way of repluican campaining, you can beat them on issue, smear them!
To be honest, Khrushchev was an Ukrainian peasant and it shows in his clownish manner of bluster and wild gesticulation. The Vice President outclassed his opponent, and carried himself with great dignity. The contrast could hardly be sharper.
Whilst yes, Krushchyov lacked any a formal education on the level of Nikion, he was an incredibly cunning and cleaver man.
One could argue that Nikion held himself with greater dignity, or that he was as fake as botox.
And that Kruchchyov was clownish and brutish, or honest and forth coming, whilst not giving anything away, and if Khrushchyov was just a peasant how did he become primer of the Soviet Union, he could hardly be called a puppet.
You have valid points, and a good question 'quicksilvertruth'. Obviously presenting style and dignity abroad has been only one part of a national leader'a task. I'm not sure how did Hruschev risen to power before and after Stalin's death, or what characteristics he needed for qualifications. -Cont.-
In any case, I believe nowadays he wouldn't be so conspicious with his manner. Heck he would've have a good time going with the US Vice President for quailhunting, or even with the President himself. they would happily clear some overgrown hedges in his Texas ranch and have beer afterward. ☺
I saw the color debate...a fragment of it on tv about 10 years ago...it also had a fragment of Jack Kerouac guest of Steve Allen in color...can't remember the show..but the 1959 color looked good, not a kinescope that looks muddy
This is funny Nixon and kruchev are great leaders

Although I HATE communists I must say that Khrushchev appears to be quite likeable in this video.
In a democratic country he may have been a rather popular politican.

What an odious pair. Yet Nixon was sly where Khrushchev was boorish. In the end, both were forced from power, judged to be embarrassments.

Nixon pulled the troops out of Vietnam, he started the war on cancer, he eased relations with the USSR and China.
I think he is given a hard time!
