  • I hope you do, Paul !! He's no slouch !! ...tho' my fav remains Tureck.

  • was he lefthanded,

  • Denis Matthews was a marvellous pianist...I think he can be mentioned along with Myra Hess, Solomon and Moura Lympany as one of the best representatives of 20th century English pianism. I LOVE his Mozart (fabulous Concertos 20 and 24), and he wrote some terrific cadenzas for Mozart Concertos. It's sad that his career took a downturn in his later years and led to his suicide in 1989. I hope more exposure of his remaining recordings can lead to a renewed interest in this very fine artist.

  • Sorry, I got the year of his death wrong--1988 of coiurse, not 1989. WONDERFUL Bach, by the way! Thanks, Paulprocopolis, for this treasurable post! Any chance of being treated to some of Matthews' terrific Mozart recordings (Sonatas, K 475 Fantasy, Concertos)?

  • It's good to know that Denis's name is still known by some! I have a few more LPs, mostly of Beethoven, but also of the Mozart concertos you mention. I'll get round to uploading more sooner or later!

  • Bach is the composer I always go back to after all the others . This playing has joined my compulsive list , on my favourites. He has always been lucky for me in music.

  • A lively and happy performance. I loved that great contrapuntal close harmony and clarity and positive ending!

  • We agree. Great LH, and very clean and dynamic. Thanks for sharing!
